I Like ItI Don’t Like It

This Independence Day weekend marked the second incarnation of the fabled Tea Party movement, protesting the government's growing involvement in economic matters. And, just like the first go-around, the July 4 protests saw an elected Republican official, undoubtedly hoping to harness some of that the popular unrest, taking the stage to a chorus of boos.

This time the recipient of the unforgiving welcome was Sen. John Cornyn. The crowd yelled at Cornyn, called him a traitor and shouted that he was "the problem" when he took the stage in Austin.

WATCH:

Cornyn was not the first to face such a reception. South Carolina Rep. Gresham Barrett also was booed mercilessly for his support of the bank bailout during the initial Tea Party protests in April.

For Cornyn, the offense seemed to be more than his support for the initial Wall Street bailout, but also his failure to cast a vote on the economic stimulus package. Though, to be fair, it appears as if the crowd pretty much despised any figure from elected office. Here is how the AP described the scene:

Republican Gov. Rick Perry told the Austin crowd that Washington needed to hear them "loud and clear" on a message of cutting spending and taxation and shrinking the government.

Perry also drew some boos on his support of toll roads to alleviate traffic congestion.

Many in the crowd of hundreds in Austin wore stickers that read, "I resist Socialism."

In Lufkin, organizers urged the crowd to call President Barack Obama and tell him "we are not happy, and we are working to make Texas free from his legislation."

Members of the crowd booed as the names of Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were read.

"I believe that President Obama was elected because we failed to lead," Ted Cruz, former solicitor general of Texas, told the Lufkin crowd. "But I also believe that his greatest legacy as president will be that he inspired a new generation of conservatives to rise up and defend our liberty."

"he inspired a new generation of conservatives to rise up and defend our liberty."

Gee... The paradox of being an anti-government political leader finally occurring to the dim-bulb Republicant base?

I wonder if there's a natural disaster in the state of Texas if they'll ask for federal government aid? Hmmm.

No we actually take care of ourselves in TX very well. We have had our share of disasters and had very incompetent help from the feds.
We even took care of LA after Katrina. It didn't much coverage, because it was successful....
Many New Orleans businesses moved over to Houston.

After Katrina, the private sector did SUCH a better job helping those people than did the feds. Just sorta verifies my argument that the federal government is pretty much the last place people should look for help.

As far as Katrina, when the Republicans came in and made FEMA into a piggy bank for OHS and set it up to fail, then don't be surprised that it failed. FEMA was working quite well until Dubya's administration wrecked it so they could say "See! We told you it was bad!" Or did you think they couldn't find a competant administrator for it by accident?

For those of you Libs who still think that these Tea Parties are nothing more than Obama bashing sessions, here's proof that the people who attend these are just standing up for our Constitution and against politicians who spend too much of our money, whichever party they are in.

Discredit them all you want, but will NOT be silenced.

Standing up for our Constitution? In what way are they doing that?

Complaining about taxes isn't "standing up for our Constitution". It is their right, sure, but nothing righteous about it, no matter how patriotic they claim to be.

Liberals think they can divide the world into two camps: big-spending liberals and big-spending neocons. They don't realize how many people hate all big government spending whether it's to fund immoral wars, corporate welfare, or deficit-exploding Obama programs. We hate all violations of the Bill of Rights, whether it's Bush's Patriot Act or Democrats' gun grabbing. And we are way more antiwar and pro-liberty than your guy, Obama, will ever be.

In past years, we were a small group of libertarians. Then Ron Paul ran for president, and the group expanded. In the future, who knows? Either we will become, "we the people," or the USA will become a relic of history just as sure as the Roman Empire is today.

Gun grabbing? Read the Bill of Rights sometime. It states that a state can arm its militia however it wants, not that private citizens can arm themselves however they want.

If a state wants to totally ignore federal law regarding gun ownership, they simply need to make a gun license into militia membership. They can arm their militia with .50 M2HB machine guns or tanks if they want then (at the militia member's own expense I am sure).

Take your gun ownership issue up with your state government and see how far you get. Federal gun laws are more common sense which the state governments don't want to fight because they don't want heavy artillery in private hands either. They could if they wanted to, but don't want to.

Some people disagree with your interpretation of the Second Amendment. Read the Federalist Papers, views of the Founders on the right to bear arms, and the Supreme Court's decision in the recent DC Gun Ban case.

What? Most of these people are not Democrats, you silly git. They are libertarians and a fair number of neo-conservative Republicans at the Tea Parties.

Get your head out of the sand and actually READ about these events.

Kay Bailey Hutchinson is quitting to run for Governor in 2010. That's the best sh.ot we have at picking up a Senate seat in the near future. Since ALL major cities went BLUE last election and we've got some excellent candidates, primary among them is Bill White IMO, we have a real chance to take that seat to D.C.
