I Like ItI Don’t Like It

This Independence Day weekend marked the second incarnation of the fabled Tea Party movement, protesting the government's growing involvement in economic matters. And, just like the first go-around, the July 4 protests saw an elected Republican official, undoubtedly hoping to harness some of that the popular unrest, taking the stage to a chorus of boos.

This time the recipient of the unforgiving welcome was Sen. John Cornyn. The crowd yelled at Cornyn, called him a traitor and shouted that he was "the problem" when he took the stage in Austin.

WATCH:

Cornyn was not the first to face such a reception. South Carolina Rep. Gresham Barrett also was booed mercilessly for his support of the bank bailout during the initial Tea Party protests in April.

For Cornyn, the offense seemed to be more than his support for the initial Wall Street bailout, but also his failure to cast a vote on the economic stimulus package. Though, to be fair, it appears as if the crowd pretty much despised any figure from elected office. Here is how the AP described the scene:

Republican Gov. Rick Perry told the Austin crowd that Washington needed to hear them "loud and clear" on a message of cutting spending and taxation and shrinking the government.

Perry also drew some boos on his support of toll roads to alleviate traffic congestion.

Many in the crowd of hundreds in Austin wore stickers that read, "I resist Socialism."

In Lufkin, organizers urged the crowd to call President Barack Obama and tell him "we are not happy, and we are working to make Texas free from his legislation."

Members of the crowd booed as the names of Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were read.

"I believe that President Obama was elected because we failed to lead," Ted Cruz, former solicitor general of Texas, told the Lufkin crowd. "But I also believe that his greatest legacy as president will be that he inspired a new generation of conservatives to rise up and defend our liberty."

I guess it depends on who you have met serving in the military.

Which political candidate supports the concept of secession and received the most financial support from the military members in the last presidential campaign? I think this is telling of where the mindset of the military is these days. Especially as they are being asked to fight on in Afghanistan.
_________________________________________________________________________________

I have met a wide variety of people in the military. Military members do not always disclose their political views, or who they contribute to--especially officers.

My point is that if there is some kind of uprising that requires activation of the national guard or even the regular military--they will be glad to go in and take care of it. Now a few guys may decide to abstain--they will be out on their ears--no they will be in federal prison.

I discuss, often politcs with my family member and my old college buddies, many who have become this echelon of officers, it may be peculiar to where I am living, but I harbor reservations that the military would have the will necessary to quell a major secessionist movement.

It may or may not, but I cannot dismiss the possibility to glibly as you are inclined to do.

The Republican neocon establishment tried but failed to coopt these tea parties.

What do we want? Speaking for myself, I want small government and freedom. Bring the troops home from around the world. Downsize the military to defend the USA within our borders, not rich countries like Germany, South Korea, or Saudi Arabia and 140+ other countries around the world. Cut domestic programs. Pay off the debt. Cut taxes. Repeal the Patriot Act. Give us our freedom back.

Do it or we will perish under a mountain of debt, war, and tyranny, just as surely as the Roman Empire did.

Can you add: No corporations - personal responsibility (of an actual human being) for all businesses? Then I could be on board with you.

But as long as we have the multinational corporations controlling our government, economy, media etc. we have NO FREEDOM.

Responsibility should be legally partioned among the shareholders of any enterprise. In addition, while we seek not to limit free enterprise via pre-emptive regulation, liability and property rights are key in protecting our environment from pollution and degradation.

I certainly won't defend Cornyn except to say that every one of those people, without that bailout, would have gone to their banks only to be told that their money was no longer their as their had been a collapse in banking.

Believe me, a depression would have led to a LOT MORE government intervention than what has been done up to now.

If you don't believe that in Sept-Nov 08 we were a hair's width away from a major financial collapse then you were not paying attention.

Interesting that these people are against programs that would help them.

We'll just take everything away from Texans...no more SS benefits, no more medicaid, no more teachers..firemen..police, no more flood relief or hurricane relief. They will not be eligible for SCHIP, food share, after school programs....nothing that would benefit them from any of our tax dollars. They already get more back from us than most any other state.

You would be obligated to deduct the monies that Texans have paid into the system, and I think they would be satisfied with that arrangement.

I think a better model to look at would be the partition of India and Pakistan to obtain an idea of how this would transpire.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:06 PM on 07/06/2009

What governor or state legislature wouldn't accept that offer: all citizens in your state get a full refund of all taxes paid into corrupt federal systems in exchange for your state opting out of same federal programs. Heck, I'm thinking maybe even blue states would go for it. It's not like there will much left to U.S. treasury after the Chinese and Saudis start diversifying away from the dollar, anyway.

Heck, if it weren't for Federal tax dollars in the form of government assistance there would be no tea baggers. They would be too busy picking veggies and fruit on truck farms hoping to make enough to buy a box of velveeta and a 6 pack of beer.

Cornyn is simply a self-serving hypocrite of the first order, citizen, as is the demonstrable majority of the GOP:

http://www.armchairsubversive.org

Texas is saddled with GOP hacks like Cornyn because too many Texans have bought into the Big Lie of the corporate aristocracy, that government is always bad, especially government "Of The People, By The People, and For The People."

Texas has become a corporatist paradise where the aristocracy of the moneyed corporations represented by creatures such as Rick Perry and Cornyn have sleazed their way into office by reciting the same old pathetic catch-phrases of "Down with statism!" and "The Federal government wants to take away your raaahts!"

Enough Texans voted for Cornyn for that reason only; he told them what they wanted to hear, he appealed to fear rooted in sheer ignorance, what Texans had been indoctrinated into believing was true by watching too much Fake News and worrying about the next TAKS test, rather than critical thinking, logic and reasoning, and an honest evaluation of empirical evidence.

Sorry, citizen, but your dog won't fight.

Leland R. Erickson

Citizen

"I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!"

Dallas in particular and many of the other large cities literally paid corporations to move here. They were given free land a long tax holiday and other incentives. That's the only reason. Even with all those incentives, many still opted for other parts of the country because their employees were appalled at the lack of "culture." For instance, Dallas is d.e.a.d after 6:00 PM. It has improved slightly in the past few years, but very few people live there. There are no grocery stores, delis, few theaters, etc.

I agree with you. Todays States Righter and less Federal Government type is just a modern day version of a Secessionist during the Civil War. the average Southerner was lied to by their Corporationists, the Plantation owners, who convinced the poor Southerner it was all about their Rights. The real Fact was that Plantation owners needed cheap or free labor and couldn't get rich without it so they propagandized poor white southerners into fighting a war for them. Did the Poor White Southerner stand to profit from the war? No. It was only the Plantation owner. In our more modern time it isn't the average joe who stands to do better if there is less government or regualtion, it is the Corporations. The same Corporations that don't like Unions and have convinced Poor White Southerners to want Right to Work states. You may have the right to Work there but do you have the right to a decent wage and a safe workplace? Not really, not there. Because you are expendable and easily replaceable. That is what being a Right Winger who supports Smaller Government will get you.

yea well take your yankee liberal politics back to the failed state you came from and leave us to the success we are enjoying based upon our limited government and lower tax policies. why is it new york, michigan, and california are bankrupt , above average unemployment, and a broken infrastructure? to much taxing and spending, which drives industry (except those beholden to the labor union) out of the state. if tax and spend worked all of the blue states would be prospering, alas they are sinking like the titanic. i have a challenge for anyone out there. name me one government program or agency that works efficiently. Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ...
The 'Department of Energy' was instituted on 8- 04-1977
TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. AND NOW IT'S 2009, 32 YEARS LATER ... AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR IT HAS 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE!
you people are idiots and i cant believe you can even find your way out of bed in the morning.
