There is, it turns out, a political price to pay when you make bold statements calling out Michael Jackson for some of the nefarious moments of his personal history.

Fans of Jackson are mobilizing to raise money for an opponent -- any opponent -- to run against Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., following the critical remarks the congressman made about the recently deceased pop icon.

Over the weekend, King said that the media had gone far over the top in glorifying Jackson, who he deemed a "low-life" pervert who "may have been a good singer" and "did some dancing."

Now, an ActBlue fundraising site has been set up by "A fan of Michael Jackson" titled "Michael Jackson Fans AGAINST Peter King."

"Peter King ought to let Jackson rest in peace, and focus on the needs of his constituents. As we mourn the loss of an American legend, political grandstanding is not what we need right now!" the page reads. "Fans of Michael Jackson and his legacy stand united against Peter King's hateful words. Please donate here to show Peter King that true MJ fans won't stand for the smearing of a pop sensation!"

The fund is being set up to benefit the Democratic nominee for New York's third congressional district -- a reliable Republican stronghold. The problem is that at this time, there is no Democratic nominee. And King has flirted with a run for New York's governor's chair in 2010. Still, it will be interesting to see the extent to which Michael Jackson devotees can mobilize politically. Who would have thought that the King of Pop's legacy would become a partisan issue?

America gets their news from tabloids. No one was talking about the massive charity efforts Michael Jackson did, making effort to make the world a better place.

At this point in time where a whole lot more is coming out about the person I begin to seriously doubt that he ever abused children sexually. There seems to have been a purity to his spirit that gets perverted.

Funny thing about this is that Rep King is absolutely right. Jackson was exactly what King stated and the MSM is indeed going over the top with all the BS about MJ's death. Whoopdy doo he's dead get over it and move on. To bad the MSM doesn't devote this much time to those who are dying everyday for this country.

MSNBC Republican Stratagist and Democrat-hater, Pat Buchanan, summed up Rep. Kings comments the best of anyone I know. He said, "When God puts HIS hands on a man's life....YOU take your hand off his life. When God called Michael Jackson home, HE put HIS hands on him and Senator King needs to take his hands...and his MOUTH off of Michael Jackson "

I'm a 77 year old, life long Republican who happens to agree with Pat !

Amazing King had the balls to say what was on his mind. He won't be popular among the MJ fans, but he hit the nail RIGHT ON THE HEAD.

The Truth is, Michael Jackson was found not guilty on 12 different counts by a jury in 2005. The truth is, in 1993 Michael Jackson settled out of court to end the nightmare. But even before he did that there were significant holes in the testimony of the boy and his father. The fact is, Michael Jackson was convicted by the public and the media the moment he was accused and no matter what the Justice system said... You people didn't care.

Justice for all. Innocent until PROVEN guilty.... Unless you're Michael Jackson

While I completely disagree with his opinion and the way he stated it, it ought to be possible for someone to publicly express an opinion without people trying to punish him for it. Free Speech is supposed to be "the American Way" but lately it seems as though if anyone says anything someone else disagrees with, there needs to be retribution. I will keep my money and let nature take it's course, simply because I believe he should be allowed to express his opinion no matter how uncalled for it might be. The same with Michelle and Sarah and all the rest of them. If they did not speak, people would not know what they stood for.

They're not arresting the guy, but as a politician... people support you or chose not to based on your ideas and actions. He's expressed an opinion that has brought people to want to mobilize against him and his politics. This is fair game.

As we do have the right to free speech in this country, that right is weighed and put to use in concert with ethics. As an elected public official, it is ethically and morally questionable for someone in Rep. King's position to level such attacks on an individual so important to so many Americans - before he is even buried. As a law maker, he should know that one is innocent until proven guilty in this country...and regardless of Mr. King's opinions, Michael was never found guilty in a court of law. One has only to watch the memorial service and hear from Michael's family and friends (his daughter at the end left tears coming from this grown man's eyes).

He owes the Jackson family an apology.

It is Rep king's right to say what he said.

It is equally the right of the Michael Jackson fans to take offense and organize against him.

It is the same right.

While there has been a great deal of coverage, Mr. King is too old not to have a long view of the life of an individual. We have honored a host of womanizers, alcoholics, drug addicted Presidents, mobbed-up entertainers, and no one has complained. So if for a minute we look beyond the allegations (none of which was he found guilty of) and think about the fact that you can not overstate (nor understand, if you are white) the importance of the Jackson 5's ascendence on the nation's black youth and adults in the late 60's. Arriving just after the 64' Civil Rights Bill and the 65' Voting Rights Act, the success and acceptance of the J5 in mainstream America helped begin building a bridge that was long overdue. In 1983 MJ gave us the finest single performance of the time, maybe ever. As the furor over the civil and voting rights initiatives of the previous years waned, and before MTV was commonplace, seeing the J5 on national television seemed to suggest for me, and many other black youth, that this country might be ready and our generation just might have it a little better than our parents. I might add that Michael broke the MTV color barrier and changed the entire music video format with the "Thriller" production. Finally, there was the humanitarian who gave away millions to those in need.

When "KIng Ronald Reagan" died, the country was force fed a weeks worth of his funeral.
I watched not one moment of it.

I will however watch the Michael Jackson celebration, his frailties obvious, his talent touched everyone.

Can someone direct me to Rep. King's youtube rant against the Catholic Priests CONVICTED of child molestations. I'd be really, really interested to hear what the Honorable Representative King had to say on this subject.

Thank you.

From the New York Daily News:

King also accused the Vatican of hypocrisy because the Catholic Church kept its widespread priest sex abuse scandal quiet for years. "Within two days, we began a complete investigation," King said. "The church went decades allowing priests and nuns to sexually abuse kids . . . and even to this day never accounted for what happened."

In this particular case, in my opinion, whether or not he was a pedophile is beside the point.

Anyone who has to climb over the body of a recently deceased person in order to get a little bit higher above the crowd is a coward. If he needs to have his political career enhanced he could do that in a positive way not by reviling someone who is revered around the world. Did he think he was going to change people's opinion by his name calling? I can't believe he didn't know how stupid that was, and how badly it would turn out. That shows lack of understanding and mean-spiritedness.

I`m a liberal democrat, and I disagree with peter king about alot of things, but he is right on about mj.The guy was talented but very flawed, and this coverage 24/7 is ridiculous. The guy is on tape admitting he likes to sleep with boys.the guy was a weirdo, and Anyone who would leave their kids with this guy is out of their minds.Up to 1984,Michael Jackson had a real good career, very talented.Ever since,he`s fallen deeper and deeper into a deep hole, fueled by drug addiction and a flaw that most people in our society find hard to forgive,he liked young boys.the truth hurts.

When I first came to Turkey, I noticed a pop singer that made Micheal Jackson look like a model for Men's Fitness. http://www.unlulerkervani.com/data/media/463/zekmrenqm9.png I asked my Turkish friend "Who on earth that woman was". And they told me, "Oh him? That is one of our most famous singers of traditional Turkish music." I wasn't even sure it was a male, as a matter of fact. Sometimes I would find myself in a room full of conservative old men all watching this odd figure on TV. All very strange, I kept thinking.
Later, I came to appreciate the fact that the Turks, unlike the majority of Americans, took very little interest in the singer's flamboyant appearance and lifestyle. What was important was his dedication to his art and the enrichment to his culture this man offered.

This country don't need people like Peter King representing them. N Y please vote to block Peter King man out of the office and stop him from becoming a GOV.

If he’s got his eye on a state Senate seat or the governorship, then medici hit the nail squarely and succinctly on the head. And while Pete's words might not be detrimental if he's content to live out the rest of his political days as a state representative, those words sure don’t reflect very well on him or his unpleasant, classless little district.

You know, for those who say "enough already" about the coverage of Michael Jackson: There is a world, outside of your world, in which Michael Jackson made an impact on our lives. I was nine years old when he started singing, and have been a fan ever since. I don't tune into the gossipy type shows. They pretty much suck. Michael is still someone's son, brother, father, etc. He touched people around the globe. This won't last forever. Take a break for a while if you don't want to watch.

Completely agree. I thought the coverage was a bit over the top, but then so was Michael Jackson. The thing I simply cannot understand is, it is your choice how much you want to absorb. We have a choice and if you are bored with the media hype, then turn off the TV and go to the park, read a book, download a podcast. Quit complaining and start living.
