There is, it turns out, a political price to pay when you make bold statements calling out Michael Jackson for some of the nefarious moments of his personal history.

Fans of Jackson are mobilizing to raise money for an opponent -- any opponent -- to run against Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., following the critical remarks the congressman made about the recently deceased pop icon.

Over the weekend, King said that the media had gone far over the top in glorifying Jackson, who he deemed a "low-life" pervert who "may have been a good singer" and "did some dancing."

Now, an ActBlue fundraising site has been set up by "A fan of Michael Jackson" titled "Michael Jackson Fans AGAINST Peter King."

"Peter King ought to let Jackson rest in peace, and focus on the needs of his constituents. As we mourn the loss of an American legend, political grandstanding is not what we need right now!" the page reads. "Fans of Michael Jackson and his legacy stand united against Peter King's hateful words. Please donate here to show Peter King that true MJ fans won't stand for the smearing of a pop sensation!"

The fund is being set up to benefit the Democratic nominee for New York's third congressional district -- a reliable Republican stronghold. The problem is that at this time, there is no Democratic nominee. And King has flirted with a run for New York's governor's chair in 2010. Still, it will be interesting to see the extent to which Michael Jackson devotees can mobilize politically. Who would have thought that the King of Pop's legacy would become a partisan issue?

Regardless of MJ and his humanitarian acts and eccentricities, all this fund is doing is drawing more attention to King. It is a platform for his supporters as well as dissenters, and the flames are fanned with every donation made that some Republican moneybag decides they want to match and double.

Good job, MJ fans.

"that some Republican moneybag decides they want to match and double."

Why would you think that would be the result? Not a lot of evidence of that happening elsewhere. Is King *that* popular with the GOP base?

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. When Michelle Bachmann opened her mouth and let the crazy fly out, her opponent raised a million dollars in 24 hours. So your hypothesis is not how these things typically work.

No childhood, no real loving relationship as an adult, a lifetime of people taking advantage of you, using you, wanting to be near you or your friend just because of your money and influence. I know from first hand experience as he is my cousin. Why do you think that some of his only real true friends are the likes of Liz Taylor, Marlon Brando and other mega stars who are lonely in a crowd of their own celebrity. They are eccentric, but because they have to be, not because they seek it per se. after being accused of such things that HE NEVER DID, his heart and spirit was broken. he never recovered, and self medicated as many of us do. meds may have been a contributing factor, however ultimately it was a broken heart that ended his life.

MJ was never proven quilty was he? I dont think so; thought it was innocent until proven quilty in America?

Yup, just like OJ

OJ got off on a host of technicalities. Police tampering with evidence and a D.A that based his whole case on a glove that didn't fit.

In 1993, before MJ settled out of court to end that hellish experience the testimonies of the boy and his fathers were found to be full of holes and inconsistencies.

In 2005, it was proven that the mother was a professional con artist and and their entire testimony was one lie after an other. Leading to Michael Jackson to be found not guilty on 12 different counts.

No I'd have to say it's nothing like OJ

So it's only ok to bad mouth someone when they are alive... but when they are dead "whoa, can't talk about the bad that they did because he is dead."

Was Michael Jackson convicted? No. King was wrong to call out Jackson for acts he was not proven to have done. If we all had to walk around with the labels people assign to us, for any reason at all, I doubt there would be so much name-calling. I could call King a fat windbag but that doesn't mean he is one--but he does look like one.

OJ wasn't convicted either. It doesn't mean people have to go around pretending like they think OJ was innocent.

There are two salient facts that King does have on his side. One is the $22M that Jackson paid out to one of the alleged victims to stop cooperating with the police. The second is Jackson's infamous interview where he talks about sleeping in the same bed with boys he invited to Neverland.

So it's only ok to bad mouth someone when they are alive... but when they are dead "whoa, can't talk about the bad that they did because he is dead." All he was saying is that it is ridiculous how much we are sensationalizing him when all he was was a great entertainer with a very troubled past.

We have freedom of speech. It's ok to promote white supremacy or sexism also. But most people will disagree with you and find it offensive.

Michael was more than a pop icon. He was an incredible humanitarian. Why can't the media give more coverage to the whole truth about him? Not just rumour and falsehoods. Please let King know how we feel about his slander.

Republican Democrat Hate mongeror, Pat Buchanan, put these comments in perspective during his interview on MSNBC (TO MY UTTER AMAZEMENT). "King was WRONG to make those comments, regardless of how he personally feels about Michael Jackson. There is an OLD SAYING: 'When God puts his hand on a man's life....take your hand off". When God decided Micheal Jackson's life was over...GOD put his hand on his life...and KING was wrong...and needs to take his hands...and MOUTH off Michael Jackson...PERIOD!!!"

That's actually not all he was saying. If that was all he was saying, he really didn't need to use the words "low-life" or "pervert," did he?

Totaly agree. I'm not a MJ fan, but why would anyone say bad things about him now?. Just to make his grieving Mother and Father cry a little harder. NO heart. Just a Politician who needed something to say.

Hey RiceStarz, a broken heart didn't kill Jackson... Diprivan did. I was given the same stuff back in March of 2007 when I was in a coma for 3 weeks. It was the sedative the hospital gave me while I was in my coma.

No, a broken heart did. You don't know that as fact that substances did. And even if it were a factor, ultimately many self medicate to ease the pain of life. Whether it be ciggys, booze, a blunt prescription meds, it is all too common and ALWAYS the result of a broken heart and or spirit.

Thank you for the links. I have written King and told him just what I think of him. And the article was really illuminating. Everyone should read it. Anyone who thinks Michael Jackson was guilty after reading it just wants to villify him, in my opinion.

You know, I'm as sick of hearing about Jackson as anyone, but I knew that King stuck his foot in a bear-trap with his statements. It was just a stupid attempt to call attention to himself and he did. Too bad for King it will be all negative attention.

I had issues with Michael Jackson ever since the first child molestation allegations in 1993, and didn't care that much for his music -- though I am a huge rock (and classical music) fan -- However --

Between Michael Jackson and Peter King, I'd say we lost by far the better man.

Peter King (R-Knucklewalker) is simply an ogre, having his Sister Souljah moment because his campaign consultant told him to. I've never heard anything but partisan quackspeak from that man.

What is really too bad is that you have not taken the time to know the facts. It is an awful shame that a white person can falsely accuse a black person in this day and time and get away with it.
In BOTH CASES Michael was framed. In the first case, his advisors steered him wrong in the interest of preserving their stake in Michael's wealth-like his insurance company.

In the second case, it was the testimony of 18 witnesses that proved that the family charging Michael were scam artists who tried to scam Jay Leno as well!

Your "assesment" of Michael is way off. Funny how you ignore people who really know the truth.
This is why we are viewed around the world as STUPID AMERICANS!
