There is, it turns out, a political price to pay when you make bold statements calling out Michael Jackson for some of the nefarious moments of his personal history.

Fans of Jackson are mobilizing to raise money for an opponent -- any opponent -- to run against Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., following the critical remarks the congressman made about the recently deceased pop icon.

Over the weekend, King said that the media had gone far over the top in glorifying Jackson, who he deemed a "low-life" pervert who "may have been a good singer" and "did some dancing."

Now, an ActBlue fundraising site has been set up by "A fan of Michael Jackson" titled "Michael Jackson Fans AGAINST Peter King."

"Peter King ought to let Jackson rest in peace, and focus on the needs of his constituents. As we mourn the loss of an American legend, political grandstanding is not what we need right now!" the page reads. "Fans of Michael Jackson and his legacy stand united against Peter King's hateful words. Please donate here to show Peter King that true MJ fans won't stand for the smearing of a pop sensation!"

The fund is being set up to benefit the Democratic nominee for New York's third congressional district -- a reliable Republican stronghold. The problem is that at this time, there is no Democratic nominee. And King has flirted with a run for New York's governor's chair in 2010. Still, it will be interesting to see the extent to which Michael Jackson devotees can mobilize politically. Who would have thought that the King of Pop's legacy would become a partisan issue?

The musical artist who gave us "Thriller" - the one the public seems to want to mourn - morphed into the freakish, middle-aged, drug addict who admittedly enjoyed the bedroom companionship of young children. That is the creature Congressman King is speaking about. And he is spot on accurate in his assessment of the media's perverted glorification of celebrity.

BTW, it is deliciously ironic that the Staples Center in LA is playing host to a real circus tomorrow after the media circus today.

Hey Emerald:

How can you make the comment "why do white people do this all the time?" and say that I am the ignorant one when I am only comparing two high profile acquittals? Is that the extent of your defense? Turn it into a racial "thing"?

It is funny how our society will quickly hand out street justice to the Black man. We've seen it with OJ, being acquitted of murder but was tried again for the same murder in a case disguised as a robbery charge. Now we're seeing it again with MJ. Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation charges but like OJ white people sees Michael as one that got away from their l y n c h m0b and unfortunately d!ed before they could get a second shot at him.

Michael is the greatest entertainer to have ever lived and yes, hate it or love it, he was black; irrespective of all the “black to white” lame attempts at a joke people might utter. We as black people love him because he is one of our own…troubled? Yes….but he is our own, nonetheless. The same way white people claim Elvis. The only thing is Elvis isn't worthy to drink the p!ss from Michael's bed pan.

Yeah, I know I am going to get all the “why does it always have to be about race with you?” replies. Well, because in American, that is how the masses see things. You are judged differently based on the color of your skin and the black man has to work twice as hard to be considered half as good.

Michael was more than a pop icon. He was an incredible humanitarian. Why can't the media give more coverage to the whole truth about him? Not just rumour and falsehoods. Please let King know how we feel about his slander.

"Why can't the media give more coverage to the whole truth about him?"

Bad news in media sells and attracts more readers than good (like your links) because people take the latter for granted, which I know I and many of his fans are feeling now. Good news will elicit momentary interest while the bad will often generate hours of discussion and money from all of the stories they have now created.

I also think many people take what the media tells them at face value because it's easier.

Thank you for the links

You're too right and most welcome. A broken heart killed Michael. End of. He will live forever however through his music and foundations and the magic he has left in all of us. He was more than a pop icon. He was a great humanitarian and a free and open spirit who loved life. Even when some pis sed on his wings.

Hey Emerald:

I'm sorry, I didn't know that when I was trying to make a "point" as you say, that there are boundries and guidelines that I have to follow. But why is it, that even though my point is valid, that the only defense you have is racially motivated? My point was in no way racially motivated if I am just comparing to high profile acquittals.

Try replying to their response instead of to the story. Need attention much?

Never said there were any "boundries" (spell check, my friend) and "guidelines", just pointing out a fact.

The differences:
MJ is:
-A world reknowned pop icon, with the biggest selling album of all time
- literally every person in the world knows who MJ is, even the lost boys of sudan who knew nothing of the west, when asked who they would like to meet said...... MJ!
-"we are the world" song, that MJ co-wrote, saved a starving country...by bringing much needed rescources and attention to famine

pk's short resume: is just a self righteous bafoon, who as accomplished nothing but be a partisan hack.

good luck with that i agree with everything king said and to all who say mj was not convicted he paid off 20 million say again 20 million in settlements to his victims ! this guy was guilty as sin.

So in the US not guilty means guilty, eh? Then to even be charged means guilty? People, and Corps. pay to make things go away for various reasons, some good and some bad. But without any evidence you have convicted someone for something YOU think they did, and can not prove.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:43 AM on 07/07/2009

Even though the person he paid the "undisclosed amount" admitted on tape that nothing happened and he was just after "taking him down"?

Yes, that must mean MJ's "guilty as sin". /snark

Your comments are ignorant. I suggest further reading about the subject before you make any more comments as you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

MJ was aquitted of all charges.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:21 AM on 07/07/2009

Just as the NYPD officers that killed Amadou Diallo, were aquitted of all charges **** although they admit that they killed him****** they say that had a good "excuse" so it was justified*********MJ paid to make the abuse case vanish******paying the "non-victim" 20 million dollars, MJ admitted that he slept with "boys"****should rational people just ignore those facts?

Why is it that when people speak the truth, it is always to harsh and inappropriate? The only thing that King did was speak his opinion, which I thought was free from tyranny in this country, and say who he thought should be getting this kind of attention.

He is free to speak his opinion and he did. This is the one and probably only time I'll ever agree with him. Other people are free to disagree with him and even raise money to support his opponents. To call that "tyranny" is just ridiculous.

Because calling Jackson a "pervert" and a "pedophile" is NOT true, by any legal definition, (unless trial by media speculation is your idea of jurisprudence) and, considering King's real and obvious purpose (to ingratiate himself to resentful, self appointed victims) his DANCE ON JACKSON'S grave" IS inappropriate, if not completely IRRELEVANT.

One is free to speak their opinion, and people are free to disagree, and act on this disagreement within the bounds of the Law. I find it funny who could loose his job because of his statement, but I am for this type of grass root action.

Regardless of how one feels about Michael Jackson, one wonders about the desperation of KIng and the Republicans to stoop so low to make political hay with their base (blue collar whites over 55) especially knowing what it will cost them with nearly all of the growing demographics.

When they did this in reaction to the discovery of Ted Kennedy's brain tumor, a european commentator remarked:

"Their country is falling apart yet all they can do is dance on a man's grave"?
http://satireandcomment.com/0508ted.html

Remember when Republicans mocked Obama's suggestion to keep tires inflated to reduce energy costs, he said: "It's like they're PROUD of their ignorance."

Indeed, they seem to be DEPENDENT on ignorance, at this low point.

Its funny to hear all the GOP-tards talk about Jackson-
Let us mention Foley, Craig and a few other deviants and child-stalkers
that the GOP has brushed under the table??
King is one of the 'worst' politicians in NY
and is upset that the GOP in NY will be turned on its head soon.
There are a number of 'GOP whako-jack-offs' in NY and nation-wide
not being spoken of, but what's clear is the jealousy that King and
the rest of you 'haters' have, knowing that even collectively,
none of you will ever achieve what MJ has-

The thing is, the Republican was being hypocritical and proving his own "point". If he wanted to keep the focus off of MJ so badly, he didn't have to say a word about him! He could have just acknowledged the soldiers, veterans, etc. and be done with it. He clearly did this for attention.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:59 AM on 07/07/2009

Yes you are right.
No one is taking the focus off the soldiers.

And with this, they rejoice in dismissing him as a low life and a pervert when even a US court of law has rejected the claims against him. I'll never support another Republican for as long as God sees fit to keep me on this earth.

Lwilkinson, it isn't any different. Two people did two terrible things, and both of the victims decided to take the civil road rather than the legal road. If someone in your family died by a drunk driver, would you say "ok just give me x amount of dollars, spend a week in jail, and we will call it even"? It's the same thing. Jackson admitted to sleeping with boys in his bed, and there really isn't any doubt as to his guilt. Do you also believe that Barry Bonds is the rightful homerun king, and didn't know that the creams he was applying had steriods in them?

If a drunk driver killed my relative... Or if a man molested my children... There's no way in HELL I'd settle out of court. And having known a quite a few victims of molestation, there's no way in hell they'd CHOSE to settle either
