There is, it turns out, a political price to pay when you make bold statements calling out Michael Jackson for some of the nefarious moments of his personal history.

Fans of Jackson are mobilizing to raise money for an opponent -- any opponent -- to run against Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., following the critical remarks the congressman made about the recently deceased pop icon.

Over the weekend, King said that the media had gone far over the top in glorifying Jackson, who he deemed a "low-life" pervert who "may have been a good singer" and "did some dancing."

Now, an ActBlue fundraising site has been set up by "A fan of Michael Jackson" titled "Michael Jackson Fans AGAINST Peter King."

"Peter King ought to let Jackson rest in peace, and focus on the needs of his constituents. As we mourn the loss of an American legend, political grandstanding is not what we need right now!" the page reads. "Fans of Michael Jackson and his legacy stand united against Peter King's hateful words. Please donate here to show Peter King that true MJ fans won't stand for the smearing of a pop sensation!"

The fund is being set up to benefit the Democratic nominee for New York's third congressional district -- a reliable Republican stronghold. The problem is that at this time, there is no Democratic nominee. And King has flirted with a run for New York's governor's chair in 2010. Still, it will be interesting to see the extent to which Michael Jackson devotees can mobilize politically. Who would have thought that the King of Pop's legacy would become a partisan issue?

Enjoy your time in congress Peter King. When 2010 comes you will be unemployed.

I'm not so sure about that, it depends how much Queens has changed over the years. It was not known for it's ethic diversity in the past.

King is Rep from the 3rd CD in Nassau County not Queens. However you are spot on about the diversity factor as yo can see for the clip from the Daily Show

Thank you for posting this. After MJ's death, I looked into the 1993 case more deeply because I was never convinced he was guilty. Everything I've read about both cases shows that the accusers were after MJ's money. It's all right there. Even the boy's father admitted on tape that he wanted to go after Jackson's money!

Anyone who thinks that Jackson is a pedophile is ignorant and hasn't taken a hard look at the facts on both cases. And since there were many people who cared about Jackson and his failing health, his death was seen as someone who died way too early.

Peter King's comments were hurtful and incorrect. If he wants to turn off the TV, fine. But let the rest of us mourn a guy who was very talented, who was genuinely a nice guy, who died at a very young age after dealing with extortionists for the last decade and a half. After all that MJ has been through, he deserves to have a proper memorial, proper burial. And I'm happy that most of us have chosen to celebrate his life, instead of focusing on the dark times that caused him to become frail and weak and eventually cost him his life.

MJ was a good person who was taken advantage of. Peter King is a real asshat for what he said.

In general, I believe it is better to not say unkind things about people.

But I have to agree with King The media frenzy of MJ has been insufferably long, and insufferable.

He was probably a genius song and dance man.

But so was Fred Astaire.

Which would you rather celebrate as an American icon?

Here is something to think about America: we have a constant need to feed our prurience, because we have to moral compass anymore, anything goes, and the weirder and more titillating it is, the better we like it. The media understand this. MJ embodies the high and the low in extremes, and that will be his legacy.

But why do we as a culture crave the low-brow so much?

If we really had our sensibilities in tact and our heads and hearts screwed on right, we would have paid lip-service to this man's passing.

He hasn't done anything artistically great in more than 20 years. The rest is for the psychologists, if they care.

That may be your opinion, but there are millions who disagree.

I want to mourn his passing, more than Fred Astaire, simply because he was a good person who was very talented. And how is this "low-brow"?

Turn off your TV then, if you don't like the coverage.

Or better yet, shut your trap until the funeral is over. Then we can all go back to our daily lives. But I think those who are mourning his death deserve their time to mourn. The fact that people are outright calling out those who mourn is horrible and disrespectful.

Name three Platinum Albums Fred Astaire put out, or name one song that went gold, can't do it can you? So no they aren't same.

If that is you reason why we shouldn't give the man a decent send off you're really missing the point. MJ meant a lot to people around the world, because you don't understand it doesn't mean they should stop grieving.

As much as I HATE Peter King ( I think he is one of the worst politicians in Washington by far, an arrogant jerk, etc.), this is the first and only time I 100% agree with him.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:58 AM on 07/07/2009

People are mad, because of hate in King's words. As for the media, I think they have spent too much time on his personal life. On every channel, they begin with his music, saying very little, but quickly moving on to the terrible things in his life. He deserves as much credit for his mushic as Elvis, John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, and others. We all know Michael had his share of problems and maybe the allegations are true, but he was found innocent of all charges. It's time to let him rest! If we are all to be judged, then Michael will be judged for his behavior, whether it was good or bad.

Many people do I guess, but using a death to get your face in front of a camera is sort of opportunistic in crummy way. I don't like King, I never have on style alone.

If you agree with him 100% then you are saying that Michael Jackson was found guilty of being a pedophile because this is what KING said! KING said why are you all carrying on about this guy he was a pedophile and a pervert! FYI, Michael Jackson was found innocent of 14 Felony counts; and little undiscussed fact of the 1993 case was the two grand juries that were convened to try to indict Michael, however, neither grand jury gave out indictments based on the info present by the SB Prosecutors

Perhaps King is as tired of the over the top nonsense lavished on Jackson as are most of us in the real world. Yes, Jackson was a tremendous talent but beyond that, he blew it. He wasn't a role model I'd want for my children. Witness the childish , unreasonable behavior from delusional fans when any criticism is lobbed his way.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:33 AM on 07/07/2009

Not everyone liked Michael Jackson's music, or persona. Not everyone liked Elvis. But Michael Jackson made millions happy, gave them pleasure and joy. Maybe that is why he has fans? Now he is dead. The childish delusional behavior, is coming from the ev1l ug1y politician who thinks that he can exploit hatred of a dead man for his contemptible political career, which has nothing to do with Michael Jackson, his music, his fans, the state of new york, or congress.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:10 AM on 07/07/2009

The over the top media attention is really the issue here, not MJ, bashing Jackson accomplishes very little politically.

I guess King thinks he's gonna tap into a whole new contributor pool with this comment. It's akin to the "There are two many mosques in the US." How much it has to do with Long Island politics I don't know. But he's clearly concerned about his chances for re-election. Money isn't flowing in.

Plus most of his cash comes with strings attached. Witness the "terrorist-proof manhole cover" fiasco. that Public Utilities says would actually prevent their workers and the Fire Dept. from dealing with emergencies. But King, then head of the House Subcommittee on Homeland Security, ensured that one of his major contributors got the "unwanted" federal contract.

Of course, maybe Joe Lieberman will bail him out? Again.

BEFORE RESPONDING TO WHAT I SAY THINK AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. OK, HERE IT IS:

Hillary would've been able to get a good health plan through congress. She's got the know how, the smarts, and most important: the cojones. Obama is very soft, won't and can't fight hard enough, doesn't want to offend.

Despite the rumors, Michael Jackson at least had his day in court and was acquitted...which is something that the Republican criminals that ran this country seem to be evading thanks to a DOJ and Defense-Intelligence apparatus that is afraid of having their acts called "criminal".
