CHICAGO — The Tribune Co. has reached a written agreement to sell the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field and other assets to the family of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts for about $900 million, a person close to the negotiations said Monday.

The agreement was reached over the weekend and a document outlining the deal _ called a term sheet _ was sent to Major League Baseball for review, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced.

The term sheet is not a final agreement, according to the person, who added that it contains details on how the Ricketts family will finance the deal. The deal also would give the Ricketts family a 25 percent interest in a regional cable television sports network.

Tribune Co. would not confirm an agreement had been reached.

"We continue an active dialogue with the Ricketts family with an eye toward reaching a definitive agreement," spokesman Gary Weitman said in an e-mail. "We don't intend to comment on the specifics of any potential transaction."

The team has been on the market since 2007, when real estate mogul Sam Zell announced his $8.2 billion purchase of Tribune Co. The financially troubled media giant filed for bankruptcy last December but the Cubs were not included in the filing.

Tribune Co. announced in January that the Ricketts family bid had been selected over two others for the team.

Cubs fans have greeted the news enthusiastically, in part because the Ricketts family in general, and the family point man in the bid in particular, are viewed as loyal Cubs fans.

Tom Ricketts has figured prominently in the selection process, from his days living across the street from Wrigley Field to the day he met his wife in the bleachers of the storied park. Ricketts fueled the perception that he is among the loyal with his initial public statement about the plan to purchase the team.

"We share the goal of Cubs fans everywhere to win a World Series and build the consistent championship tradition that the fans deserve," Ricketts said at the time.

But negotiations lasted longer than expected, complicated by factors such as Tribune Co.'s financial straits as well as the Ricketts' efforts to secure financing during the recession.

On Monday, though, Cubs manager Lou Piniella expressed optimism about the deal.

"I'm glad to see that things are progressing," he said. "Yeah it's a positive thing for this organization. It's been a while. It was good news. I heard it when I came to the ball park and I was very pleased."

Piniella said he has not met Tom Ricketts, but "I heard he's a fine gentleman and will be a really nice owner."

This could very well be the dumbest financial move ever.

The Tribune also owns WGN. I would say the pairing of WGN and the Cubs is a great moneymaker. But on the whole, the thing weighing the Tribune Corp. down is... the Tribune.

Dead tree media is dead. If they sell of anything... it should be the newspaper. Instead, they are selling off possibly the most valuable asset they hold. That's the magic of the Chicago Cubs- the worse they do in season, the more their fans love them! They sell out every game, whether they stink or not.

Rickets? Ick! Just.....plain.....ick!

I remember the 2006 campaign Pete Rickets tried to use his vast amounts of $$$$ to wage a political campaign against Nelson in 2004. Sure, Nelson is a RINO, but you should have SEEN the freeperesque right-wing campaign commercials Rickets was waging. He was like a cartoon caricature of a money-loving, warmongering, poor-stomping republican.

Thanks GOD that even Nebraskans rejected this Lex Luthor wannabe.

And I too am wondering how in this economy, this pack of slimes can not only buy up the Cubs, but also purchase naming rights to the new baseball stadium being built in Omaha as well.

They sold the Cubs franchise to Ricketts because selling out to Mark Cuban would be deemed blasphemous by the other Major League owners, who still haven't forgiven Bill Veeck for his alleged transgressions against the Great American Pastime.

Excellent, now perhaps the Sox get a fair shake from Pravda, er the Trib.

Wrigley Field needs a major renovation for the franchise to remain competitive, but if they alter any of the major aspects of the holy chapel (manual sign and brick & ivy wall, for example) or if they sell the naming rights, you will see a full blown riot.

they can sell the naming rights, but it will always be wrigley

Just when I thought I could start reading the Trib now that they are selling the Chubs I find out my boycott must continue. They are in talks to bring Jay "I'm the Biggest @$$hole in Sports Journalism" Mariotti back to Chicago to be a part of their new internet paper/blog Chicago Now!

ashamed???? why because i'm not into listening to some guy who has no idea often what is even going on in the game, misses calls, has to rely on the replay to see a play. he's way past his prime, and by the way 'haters' this has nothing to do with the cubs. they stuck with harry way to long, and santo has turned into a parody. i feel sorry most for pat huges,,,,,,,,,,,great announcer and it's sad listening to him have to carry/correct santo.

Please, please, please tear down Wrigley Field. At the very least, overhaul the hell out of the place and make it an enjoyable venue. And at the very, very least get rid of the trough urinals. It is never fun to get splashed by strangers while relieving yourself.

Ya right wacko - tearing down a landmark, thats a smart idea. Its a major draw. So basically your plan is for the new owner to losse ticket sales by tearing down a major selling point. You must have aced business 101

What does the city do to a building that is falling down on people? (Remember the nets?) Or smells of human waste (urine)?

They condemn it & tear it down.

It's not a selling point but a safety factor.

You do realize more money is made by selling luxury boxes than regular ticket sales? If any building is as decrepit as Wrigley, it needs to be torn down. You need to get out to more ballparks if you think Wrigley is so wonderful.

The Japanese will pay more for a franchise than Iowa can pay. The Red, Pirates & an un-named NL or expansion NL team go to Japan with the Cubs. The White Sox, Indians, Tigers & a team to be named later go to Japan or East Asia. The AL will expand. Japan & Eastern Asia could end up with an AL expansion team. The lords of MLB should expect to be forced to send good teams to Asia/Japan. The Orientals have money & fans to fill their stadiums. Since airlines have excess capacity & many empty seats, they will give MLB good deals on flying teams between North America & the Eastern Orient. Chicago will get a tripple A team to compensate for their loss of the Cubs & the White Sox.
Chicagolanders should be grateful that organized, pro, baseball didn't force them to take an A league, cellar dweller.
If Chicago doesn't fill the park for its AAA league club-yes, that's right, the AAA league club will leave Chicago. Chicago will be forced to wait till an A league club will move to Chicago. That could take 3-7 years.
Baseball is a business. Broadcasting rights for a Chicago club will be anemic. Chicago will have to compete with clubs which have large multi-state audiences. St Louis & Atlanta could share the NL audience. Two strong AL teams will take the Sox audience.
Chicago is in an extremely weak position to negotiate with organized, pro, baseball.

As PT Barnum one said, "There's a sucker born every minute." 101 years and no end in sight. What a sorry team.

And the White Sox are still the better team. If only they had the sort of money the Cubs have.

Ya, the White Sucks are a good minor league team, but the sales involved a major league club not a 2nd rate minor league dirt frachise.

i know i'll probably get alot of flack for this, but please get rid of santo. nice guy, yep, great ball player, yep, should he be in the hall of fame, perhaps. great announcer, NO. i work from home, and can listen to the games on the radio, but can't afford to watch them on the t.v. during the day. they say a great radio announcer makes you feel like you're right at the game. i have never thought that with him. he reminds me of harry in his later yrs. turned into a parody of himself. get someone to back up hughes. sorry i love baseball, but am not all that concerned about ronnies rug, or saying happy birthday to aunt bee in peoria. WGN has completely revamped it's radio lineup, to a younger audience. time for ronnie to retire.

Growing up, I got the Jack, Lou, Vince, and Lloyd treatment. And sometimes Jack Drees and Harry Carey. Back in the day both teams used to switch announcer teams during the middle three innings, so Jack would go to radio and Lloyd and Lou and Vince would do the radio. I miss that. Oh, about ye olde third baseman. I understand how you feel, I felt the same way about Lou and Vince and Lloyd.

It wasn't Cubs fans who threw bleach or whatever it was on the vines at Wrigley a few years ago. Know who put them in? Veeck. Maybe Sox fans should pay more attention to their parole officers than the Cubs.
