Seal Sorrow: 90,000 Seals To Be Clubbed To Death

JOHANNESBURG — Namibia's annual commercial seal hunt will go on despite objections by animal welfare groups, a government official said Monday.

Frans Tsheehama of the Namibian fisheries and marine resources ministry said that the season started on July 1 and will run until Nov. 15.

Hunters are expected to club over 90,000 seals, including 85,000 pups.

The hunt was expected to begin last week, but there was confusion over whether the killings had begun after numerous media reports that a South African-based animal rights activist was in negotiations to halt them.

Namibia is one of only a few remaining countries with a commercial seal harvest. The government argues that the seal population needs to be controlled to protect fish stocks.

However, animal rights activists say the practice is inhumane and outdated.

Seals are hunted for skins, fur and meat, and seal genitals are sold as traditional medicines and aphrodisiacs in Asia.

Activist Francois Hugo of Seal Alert South Africa said last week that he had made a bid to buy out the company that purchases the Namibian seal pelts, effectively halting the hunt.

Hugo said that clubbing an animal to death is cruel, criminal and in defiance of international animal protection laws.

He also challenged the Namibian government's claim that the hunt maintained healthy seal populations, saying that in the past whole colonies had been devastated.

Namibia's seals number about 850,000 and live on a dozen remote, rocky islands off the coast of the sparsely populated southern African country.

The hunt takes place under clandestine circumstances to avoid the glare of publicity _ and to avoid upsetting tourists.

The government has said seals consume 900,000 tons of fish each year, more than a third of the fishing industry's catch, and that the cull is needed to protect fisheries. Animal welfare groups counter that most of the seals killed are still-nursing pups.

AJ Cady of the International Fund for Animal Welfare said that the industry is "collapsing" worldwide, citing a recent European Union ban on the import of seal products combined with the global economic downturn. In this year's Canadian harvest, sealers killed less than a third of their quota on weak demand.

"The great question here is who is really buying these things?" Cady said. "The cruelty is so obvious."

These poor, wonderful, innocent creatures must be protected.

As the governments who permit this barberous practice still persist, boycotting any products generated from the life of these animals needs to be practiced.

Eliminate the revenue source once and for all.

Are Sarah and Todd leading the pack of seal bashers? Or will they just be shooting from a helicopter?

I am so happy to find out there are ninety thousand people in the world who can afford to have sealskin coats, also this number doesn't contain the figures for Norway and Canada-I apologize if this is inaccurate.
I suggest the government of Namibia might put this seal slaughter on the tourist map. Especially the eco-tourists. "Come to see the thrilling sight of men armed with clubs as they batter to death helpless seals and their pups. Come to see the blood, hear the piteous cries of the baby seal cubs unable to escape this butchery. This is a tourists delight!"
If their numbers have to be reduced, I believe something called a gun has been invented. Anyone heard of it?

Michelle Obama has a sealskin coat. It is all the rage.

You people are complaining but what are you doing to change it, and sorry, but commenting on HP does not count.

well, i for one give many thousands of dollars a year to every major animal rights group, i donate my time and property, and i write lots of letters to lawmakers and corporations.

i have 5 rescued animals myself, i'm a vegan and a proud member of the WSPCA, ASPCA, humane society of the us, american humane society (all different entities), several local and not so local rescue and humane societies, and a proud vanguard member of peta.

...oh, and it still makes me feel better to say "eff these seal clubbing b@s tards", and i'm a 6'5" 250 pound former rugby player and fighter and i'd LOVE to have a crack at some of those hunters myself.
10:04 AM on 07/09/2009
I'd donate good money to an animal rights group to watch that!

Who one earth wears this fur? No one I know does.
06:37 PM on 07/08/2009
The worst part of this is the FACT that the "hunters" will start skinning these inoffensive creatures while they are still alive.

What kind of butcher can do this and still be considered human?

You better document that "FACT", buddy.

Maybe it's time to declare open season on the seal hunters, clubbing them as they do the seals.

I'm not joking either. I also support the sinking of whaling ships.

Humane treatment should extend to all, even those with whom we disagree strongly. Otherwise, those who advocate ethical treatment would be hypocrites, would they not? But I do understand the anger and frustration!

perhaps if humans hadn't hunted the natural predators of these seals and pushed them to the brink, there wouldn't be a "population" problem.

the population problem is with the humans, not the animals.

clubbing them like this is beyond brutal. it's got to stop.
04:40 PM on 07/09/2009
The predator problem isn't simply due to hunting. Polar bears are dying at an increased rate. It's called climate change and it's killing a lot of species.
05:25 PM on 07/09/2009
Yeah ok, Polar Bears are Canadian. what predates a seal in Africa?
04:06 PM on 07/08/2009
And this is the country that the 'saintly' Angelina Jolie supports so fiercely?!?!? Riiiight. *rolls eyes*

People who are cruel to animals will be and usually are cruel to humans (esp women and kids).

*blech*
