COLUMBIA, S.C. — Fellow Republicans have censured South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford after he left the state last month on a secret trip to Argentina to meet his mistress.

The state GOP met for more than three hours by phone Monday before 22 members of the executive committee voted to formally reprimand Sanford. Ten others voted to ask him to resign, while nine voted to support him.

In a statement, Sanford says he appreciates the party's position and will continue to work to earn back its trust.

Sanford might have survived a state probe last week into his travel, but plenty of his fellow Republicans say they are still hearing from unhappy constituents.

The governor also has repeatedly said he will serve his remaining 18 months in office.

"Sanford says he appreciates the party's position and will continue to work to earn back its trust."

How? By seducing their spouses?

Sanford only gets a reprimand by his own. John Edwards gets vilified. Guess the GOP condones the behavior for their own but kicks and screams when a Democrat cheats. Typical GOP.

People of S. C. if he stays in office it will be from your weakness and laziness to do anything about it.

I figure Sanford has been sufficiently de-fanged. I don't want him to resign. I want him talking!
I want this soap renewed for and 13 weeks!

I also don't want this Lt. Governor anywhere near the top job. It'd be like trading McCain for Palin.

Spitzer resigned for indiscretions that were less severe. Clinton, for all his faults, was never derelict in his duty. And yet , this cad stays on.
I was always one for separating a politician's personal behavior from his official, but Sanford has made me rethink that attitude. I guess there is something to the saying that a man who cannot be trusted by his family cannot be trusted by his constituents. His total lack of empathy towards his wife and children (as evidenced by his press conference and AP interview) go hand in hand with the total disregard he showed to SC children when he ditched the stimulus money. His selfishness is reflected throughout. I guess that is why people didnt shun Clinton during his affair, who was always pervceived as empathetic to his family and constituents.

OOOHHH! They censured him but didn't demand his resignation. I'm stunned. I guess there won't be milk and cookies later.

Guv,

You must really need the paycheck. For the rest of your term, you will twist slowly in the wind with the trickling and gushing of new details. What a time you will have as you repent and repent and ....

My goodness, Repugnants, it is almost time to campaign for the 2010 elections, and your messes are growing. (Booby-J is quiet; wonder what is happenin' with him?)

Hmmmm, so ten were without sin. That said, Sanford does himself and his party way more harm by staying than by going. But I think he needs the money and a place to stay. He may get to see his kids, yeah like he really wants to, but I don't think he is exactly welcom back home. Who has a hunch on the next repug to fal. Charlie, Mitt, Haley?

South Carolinians want Sanford to resign - but since when does the Republican party EVER listen to the people? The answer is NEVER.

One hopes Sanford will go the way of Coleman and Palin - yesterday's news and eventual oblivion.

If South Carolinians want that, is there a recall process down there that they could use?

Why would SC Republicans listen it's residents-- only 70% want Sanford gone. This is about party, not SC, had Palin not quit-- Sanford would be asked to resign.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 AM on 07/07/2009

Why should he resign SC has shown it will elect anyone regardless of their lack of credentials and credibility so the end game is control and the GOP certainly have that in the more backward southern states.
