Los Angeles Times:

Todd Camp and some friends had just marked the 40th anniversary of the police raid on New York's Stonewall Inn by screening a documentary on the historic gay riots and then heading for drinks at the Rainbow Lounge.

Camp remembered looking across the bar, packed with gay and some straight couples, and marveling how much times had changed since Stonewall -- the spark that ignited the gay rights movement.

As I have said many times over.
This is what you get America for giving some of the most uneducated people with no college degrees and 8 weeks of training the right to carry guns and badges and arrest people.
It is no one's fault but your own.

so if you want college educated people and better training are you gonna cough up the dough for the training and funding and salaries a college educated person would demand?

Duh. Maybe because it's true.

what is with the stereo-typical attitudes towards a region of the country?

especially from a group of people that get viewed in stereo-typical fashion?

Your State's reputation has been stained by your police department's actions. The Police work for the people and it is the people of Texas allowing this police conduct. What if anything has been done about this excessive use of force, selective enforcement and over enforcement of bar codes (usually one no more than 2 officers do these checks and usually b/t hours of (9:00am-5:00pm) NOT 6 officers at 12:30am).

In addition, why send in officers who are not gay friendly. It appears these officers had homophobia and took it out on the nearest person. Unacceptable and Texas' reputation is paying the price.

Texas is no worse than any other state as far as police brutality towards gays or anyone else for that matter goes. I'd love to see the proof to support that statement.

I have personally been in a bar in Texas that was "inspected" after 5:00 p.m. by more than two officers (at least six), so where does that info come from?

And as far as what is being done, I am sure that this isn't good enough for you, but action is being taken.

Like Texans can what other people think.

You make a lot of assumptions & accusations that aren't supported by facts.

In the 1960's, I worked half a block from a well known "gay bar" (Effie's Pink Elephant, I will never forget that "gay" name) in Houston, TX.

I never saw the cops or anyone else do anything to the owners or patrons.

Odd how the TABC suddenly became "homophobic" on the anniversary of a similar event in New York.

What an AMAZING coincidence. If you believe in coincidence.

Sterotypes are based on arbitrary or superficial characteristics.

This, however, is based on a real track record of verifiable behavior.

ok, so if we go off of verifiable behavior.

then we might as well state that ALL residents of a state are that way. which is clearly wrong.

you are using very very bad logic to excuse blanket indictments.

To all of you small minded people who base their insights on Texas to news points and some extreme idiots that do come from there, Texans are the same good and bad people that inhabit the rest of the country. Yes, it does have a recent history of bigoted right-wing leaders that disgrace themselves and the state, but it also has some of the most progressive people in the country. I'm no more afraid to be there as I am here in NYC where I currently live. Should I judge all of New Yorkers by the few a**h*les that I meet or represent this great state? Give Texas a few more years and you are going to see the state swing to a very moderate position on most issues.

Youre right about most of what you say but a few ore years and all of a sudden the hand god is going to touch Texas and bingo! -- Texas is moderate? Not likely.

It is obvious that all you are here to do is trash Texas, because you have just proven that you do not care about the facts. The five biggest cities in Texas were all blue last November. And the sixth was 51% to 49%.

And up until 1992, that revered blue state, Cailfonia, was a GOP stronghold. They gave us Nixon and Reagan, thank you very much. That was less than 20 years ago. Now all we hear is how "blue" Califonia votes. So it can and is happening in Texas, but just keep on showing how little you know.

I can't believe the thousands of videos of police brutality on YouTube. Check out this channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/CopsOutofControl

There are some good cops but overall they have been given too much power and even the good ones abuse that power. What they have done here is a disgrace. We desperately need police reform. We can not allow them to be above the law anymore.

When anyone resists arrest, refuses to comply with orders, or assaults a police officer, whatever happens to him is his own fault.

I'm far from being an apologist for cops, but cops have a tough job to do and deal with some of the most violent & dangerous people on the planet.

The simple rule is this: when a guy with a badge & a gun tells you to do something, do it and keep your mouth shut.

Saves everyone a lot of aggravation.

You can go ahead and embrace your own enslavement and unconditional submissiveness to these undereducated bullies but this country doesn't condone police brutality. We do not have to obey the orders of the police, the cops should not have guns and their job is not that dangerous. If anyone believes the police have the right to assault someone for not complying then they need to study our country's history and the Constitution. BTW the police, courts, laws and our prison system create the majority of violent offenders among us. Pick up a book, do some research and stop babbling like a Na.zi.

LOL, oh yeah, cops totally leave you alone if you comply with orders and follow instructions.

I used to live in a black neighborhood in the deep South.

Doesn't matter HOW much you obey instructions and do what they say. I lost count of the times I saw cops aggressively harassing people for nothing more than walking down the street where they live.

The fact of the matter is that a lof of cops (not all, I have cops in my family) become cops because they're bullies, because they get off lording the power they have over others, and a LOT of that bullying is directed specifically towards minorities like gays and blacks, and that goes for ALL parts of the country, it's just worst in the deep south.

The cops shouldn't have been in that bar to begin with. If a cop terrorizes you you have a right to defend youself because he's the one who's broken the law. That's what happend at Stonewall.

These arrest happen all the time in bars across the country. Is it so hard to imagine that people str8 or G.ay can get aggressive towards the police? They had just finished watching a movie about a g.ay uprising in NYC, taking on the police. Throw some alcohol in the mix and you can have individuals behaving in ways they normally would not. We act like ga.y people are so different, that they are immune from making bad choices.

pretty EXTREME if you ask me!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:25 PM on 07/06/2009

It's the TABC, they're draconian.
Bars are considered public spaces, since they are open to the public, therefore if you are drunk in a bar, you are "publicly intoxicated". If you have a license (even temporary) to serve alcohol, you are open to being raided by the TABC. They are known for entering bars and arresting people who are drunk.

Nice try but that doesn't work. It's bars that are patronized by a certain class, mostly low income that get raided and now again Gay bars. Bet the bars that these Texas cops go to are never raided.

Thought that the fund-raising thing happened in San Diego, California? That's not Texas. Did something similar happen in Texas? Or are ya so busy trying to say something "cute" about Texas that you have gotten confused?

But what about the adulterers and divorced?

Luke 16:18
Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (So Says Jesus)

Lev 20:10
And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

"As with everyone who claims moral superiority, they only pick and choose the religious propaganda that supports their personal bigotries."
i.e.; They PROJECT their own fear of being GAY onto others in an attempt to destroy it.
