Hilary Swank In 'Amelia': The Trailer (VIDEO)

Here's a first look at the trailer for 'Amelia,' the Fox Searchlight movie based on the life of Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 while trying to fly around the world.

Hilary Swank chopped her hair and thinned her eyebrows to play the legendary aviatrix, Richard Gere plays her husband, George Putnam, and Ewan McGregor her lover, Gene Vidal (father of Gore Vidal).

'Amelia' is directed by Mira Nair, who directed 'The Namesake,' and opens October 23.

My field of study is History. Amelia has always been a hero of mine. As a small child I remember finding her in the old family Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedia set. I was immediately intrigued, and was never satisfied with her alleged fate. A good movie about her is long over due. Still, I don't think Hillary is the one. As a historian I find that too many films that are supposed to honor historical icons spend more time remaking the person and the times into something that instead becomes a commemoration of ourselves. I know I'll be hated for saying this.

Hilary Swank always showed her cajoles when it came to selecting film roles, and Amelia Earhart is no exception.

Swank is brilliant and picks intelligent roles - "The Affair of the Necklace", and "Insomnia" to name a couple. I'm sure she does this role justice as well.

Have to see this film. Just wonder how they've ended it in regard to Earhart's death? Was she captured by the Japanese and impisoned or executed or did she crash into the ocean after flying too far off course and crash because she didn't have enough fuel? Was she really sent on a secret mission by Roosevelt to spy on the Japanese? Earhart became famous, truly famous, after her dispparence on that last flight and she wasn' the great pilot made out to be. There was also another woman (I forget her name), a black woman who was also famous pilot during the 20'sor 30's.
