LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson was an entertainment phenomenon both triumphant and troubled, a dazzling performer who transcended barriers, transformed the music world and transfixed fans and non-fans alike in every corner of the Earth.

But Tuesday's memorial was not for that Michael Jackson.

Instead, those closest to the legend gave us a glimpse of Michael Jackson the man.

In a poignant and serene service, the portrait they painted was of a human just as remarkable, making his loss doubly painful to bear for those who truly loved him.

"I just wanted to say ... ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just wanted to say I love him _ so much," said Jackson's 11-year-old daughter, Paris-Michael, before dissolving into tears and falling into the embrace of her aunt Janet.

It was a deeply emotional moment, the most profound part of a memorial that accomplished what Jackson could not in life: humanizing a man who for so long had seemed like a caricature.

How could someone who moved like he moved, sang like he sang, and reached musical heights no person has ever touched be as human as the rest of us? How could a man who threw a wedding for Elizabeth Taylor, had a chimpanzee as a companion, and wore masks to cover his surgically altered face be any part normal?

How can a man who admitted he shared his bed with boys _ though he maintained it was never sexual, as others suggested _ be a decent man, closer to saintly than devilish?

Story continues below

It took those closest to him, from his brother Marlon to his old friend Brooke Shields, to explain Michael Jackson to those who saw him as a talented freak _ an image that deeply pained Jackson.

So while Motown founder Berry Gordy talked about the child prodigy he signed at age 10, and pronounced him not just the King of Pop, but "the greatest entertainer who ever lived," he also talked about the little kid who played catcher during family softball games against the Gordys, who cracked jokes and frolicked in the pool. Magic Johnson talked about the perfectionist who made him achieve higher heights as a basketball player, but also told of sitting around and eating KFC at his home. And Shields talked about a friendship in which laughter was central to it all.

"We had a bond, and maybe it was because we both understood what it was like to be in the spotlight from a very, very young age," Shields said, fighting back tears. "Both of us needed to be adults very early, but when we were together, we were two little kids having fun. ... M.J.'s laugh was the sweetest and purest of anyone I've known."

For Jackson's family and the organizers of the memorial, it was a successful rehabilitation of the image of a superstar who had been derided for so long. The words "sweet" and "pure" had rarely been used to describe Jackson in the last two decades of his life, marked by allegations of child abuse, an ever-changing face, multiple lawsuits, eccentric behavior and what seemed to be one bad career move after another.

Only true Jackson fans, a number that seemed to be dwindling year after year, seemed to remember the man who dazzled us with "Thriller," made us swoon with delight with infectious grooves like "Rock With You" and "Remember the Time," and conversed with presidents, kings and queens.

Tuesday's memorial reminded us of that Michael Jackson, too. The universally revered and admired former South African President, Nelson Mandela, offered words of condolences and love for Jackson in a statement read by Smokey Robinson.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, talked about how Jackson held court with African leaders in his bid to help slow the spread of AIDS there.

And Maya Angelou, who was also represented by her words instead of her presence, offered a loving tribute for the entertainer in remarks read by Queen Latifah.

"He took a pose on his toes for all of us," Angelou wrote, remarking on his worldwide influence from "Birmingham, Ala., to Birmingham, England."

For an entertainer known for his amazing music, song took a backseat to sentiment at the service. But when it was used, it was to great effect. His very biggest hits were not part of the program.

Instead, what we heard were the songs that reinforced Jackson outside of entertainment. Longtime friend Stevie Wonder _ who summarized the thoughts of many when he said, "This is a moment I wished I didn't live to see" _ sang his own "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer," originally intended as a bitter breakup song but repurposed as a sad goodbye.

Lionel Richie, Jackson's collaborator on the anthem "We Are the World," sang a gospel classic, "Jesus is Love." Another gospel hymn heralded the arrival of Jackson's casket when a choir sang the lines, "Hallelujah, hallelujah, we're going to see the King."

Two of Jackson's songs underscored his humanitarian side _ the closing numbers, "We Are the World" and the anthem for his charity, "Heal the World."

Usher's heartbreaking rendition of "Gone Too Soon," which Jackson wrote as a memorial for Ryan White, one of the early public faces of AIDS, captured the pain not only of his fans and friends, but of his family, as the Jackson brothers came together and gripped a sobbing Usher in their arms afterward.

And Jermaine Jackson's version of "Smile," which Michael Jackson had often used as a metaphor for his own tragic life, was a fitting epitaph for his brother.

But perhaps no one lifted up the image of Jackson more than the Rev. Al Sharpton, in rousing, church-like sermon that took Michael Jackson back from the tabloid headlines. Sharpton looked at Jackson's children and declared: "Your daddy wasn't strange _ what he had to deal with was strange."

Only a mean hearted person kick a man when he's down.....

If you are tired of the Micheal Jackson's coverage simply change the channel and go to other threads but don't try to change the way most Americans feel about him!

Americans can connect with Micheal at least I can speak for the black community. We have done a lot for this country and Micheal has spent most of his life and money giving to the world. and dammit we want to celebrate his life. Even though we feel for the people in Iran we are dedicated to the American people and Micheal is most important to most Americans. Rest in Peace Micheal and we love you........ CHANGE THE DANG CHANNEL OR COMMENT ON ANOTHER DANG THREAD.

Thank you. The people crying about the coverage really have little sentimentality. Fortunately for them, huffpost is their only soapbox because no one really wants to him them in real life.

Excuse me, I am as much a Michael fan as many posting here, I respect what the man has contributed to the pop world.

But in the end, he's just another entertainer, did the world end when Aaliyah passed away? Left Eye? Big Pun? Biggie? Tupac? Layne Staley? Jimi Hendrix?

We the people should MOVE ON ALREADY!

Michael was a legend and all... WE GET IT!!!

But in the end he's just ANOTHER ENTERTAINER!!!

Should we be more worried about entertainers now, or more concerned about actual issues that affect us as a whole?

Many of us have different memories of Michael and such, that doesn't mean we should let them consume us and distract from the actual issues that affect us as a whole like healthcare coverage and jobs. This is why we consistently lose on issues, we take our eyes off the ball.

I shouldn't have to flip through every single news channel and see a tabloid Michael story, I expect to see other NEWS, keep the tabloid news stories to the entertainment shows and leave the news networks to cover actual news. I don't recall the world stopping when Aaliyah or Layne Staley died, what makes Michael any different?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:01 AM on 07/07/2009

What makes Michael any different?

People will be learning his dance moves 200 years from now. Fortunately, you will be gone by then with no trace of your existence anywhere. There is a difference.

The state is asking for donations to cover the nearly 4 million dollars in expenses for this. I wonder if they people who are worshipping Michael are donating to this expense in a state where state employess are receiving IOU's instead of paychecks.

I'm sure those people not receiving a paycheck could care less about MJ's memorial extravaganza. He was a great entertainer that is true. But so were many others. At the end of the day, he was another person, who had a lot of talent that was a God given talent, inspired by a father who beat him if he missed a dance step. A great but sad story.

During these economic trials for so many, I don't think the state should have to pay for this.

Not sure if this is true everywhere in the country, but every single local station in my area is airing the funeral live.
The same stations that complain about airing our president's addresses to the nation are airing a ninety minute funeral of a celebrity and continually advertising to watch their channel for the best coverage.
Some thing is very wrong in this country when a celebrity gets more media coverage than our president.
The dumbing down continues.

This dumbing down is surely by design. The dumber a society, the less critical they are; and the more influence the media have to hawk their sponsors' products.

As a lifelong fan of Michael Jackson, I have to say enough is enough with the 24/7 tabloid media coverage of Michael Jackson when there are more pressing issues to worry about.

We have 50 million people without healthcare, a lot of people looking for jobs, an incredibly horrible economy, troops fighting overseas, and the most important thing on the American people's minds is Michael Jackon? Has America lost it?

Sure he was a legend and inspiration to many, but in the end he is just another celebrity, when have celebrities become more important than the real issues facing our daily lives? Have we really began to care less about things like healthcare and jobs until we don't have them anymore?

I know I will be attacked for this post, but as a Michael fan even I am saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The coverage has been more than enough and sometimes even tabloidish, if I wanted to read or hear tabloidish entertainment news, I'd watch Entertainment Tonight, I shouldn't be flipping through MSNBC, Fox, CNN, and seeing Michael 24/7 all the time... I expect to see OTHER NEWS!

R.I.P. Michael Jackson and all, but let's move on already, there are more pressing issues to worry about!

If he was Elvis, there wouldn't be this outcry... read into that what you want.....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:54 AM on 07/07/2009

I'm glad someone brought up Elvis. Elvis's death was huge media blitz-- or as huge as it could be in those days, pre-cable, pre-internet. Much of this blitz is because of its ability to be a blitz. Also, I think, anyone older than about 40 years-- black and white-- grew up w/ Michael... watched him grow up, watched the changes, physically, mentally, musically, spiritually.
His death, and his memorial, is big, because he's always been big-- always a source of question, debate, disdain, admiration, inspiration, etc., but always interest. Indifference is has never been a feeling or attitude I've ever encountered, where this man was concerned, so why, now, the who-cares rhetoric? He's been in the cross-hairs of the public eye all his life-- if I'm surprised about anything, it's the people who are surprised at the media coverage.
Also, since when have the American people not been able to read, watch, and be interested in a variety of issues, at once? Like our president says, I can walk and chew gum at the same time.

It has zero to do w/ Michael Jackson whom I grew up with, love, and still love. It's about the shameless "tabloidization" of his death and the scrambling effort of many to get a hand on his assets that bugs me. But I would've expected nothing less from La La Land, Los Angeles.
