On her second international trip as first lady, the welcoming cover stories and street chatter here have focused on her White House kitchen garden rather than her clothes, her Ivy League pedigree or her interest in promoting public service.

MY grandparents were old Russians. The garden was paramount. Everything came from it. My father was in WWII. and so was my mother. Remember we were on the same side!

It is very important that Michelle O. is appreciated for her advocacy of gardening. THis is a link to all of my grandmothers.

This is an example of knowing that the everyday understanding of the garden rules over the false promise of arms and oil.

I'm not surprised that this is the reception the First Lady gets in Russia. They went through their economic meltdown a few years ago, and the back yard and rooftop gardens were vital, as were the kind of hand-me-down furniture and clunky utilities that North Americans would laugh at, but could be fixed with a hammer and solder.

Gardening, flowers, fruits, vegetables, is a way of life for me. I've always done this and I'm glad to see the FLOTUS promoting it. There is great pleasure in a garden and it's a fabulous place for children to learn about where food comes from and how hard it is to produce it.
Also, I like trying different things and methods and always enjoy using heirloom seeds as that produce has the best flavor.
I can and freeze and it's nice to have all those lovely things to eat in the winter so I don't have to drive to the store in the snow when I need something.
Gardening is a wonderful thing and if it brings us closer to an understanding with the Russians, I'm especially glad of that.

i live 11 doors fromt he ocean so i have to deal with salt air etc, but i find peppers and tomatoes do well, we are trying corn too. i give kudos to FLOTUS she has inspired many to take up the shovel, now if we can get grocery stores in stead of kfc and burger kings in to depressed urban areas.

You guys should be worried about REAL POLLUTANTS that destroy land air and water.....not CO2, CO2 does not pollute the air, land or water.....if it did we wouldn't even exist..

Perhaps if you were to look at the big picture you may realize that all that carbon is not in the atmosphere for a reason.

My tomato plants are going off big time! I knew this would happen, first it was just a one or two tomatoes, now it's like every time I look there are five or six ready to pick or rot on the vine...if all my challenges could be such ;-)

You know how you can tell global warming is a hoax....look at how many posts there are in the green category........hardly any at all....if people really thought the world was going to end you think they'd be a little bit more interested in the subject...but the majority knows its a hoax....

It's good to see the First Lady promoting gardening. We all can really take a lesson from our grandparents generation, from the days when everybody had their own small garden of some kind. Both sets of my grandparents had small gardens in their yards and I have so many good memories of picking fruits and vegetables and cooking them up for dinner. It's not as hard as it seems, no matter where you live. I live in the desert southwest where the soil isn't very good, so I plant my garden in old plastic pots. I just line them up around the perimeter of the lawn and I've got fresh fruits and veggies virtually year round.

Our neighbour planted a flower bed in an old tractor tire, but she also painted it some pretty colour each year.
