JUNEAU, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's early departure from office is creating political opportunity for others who want to be the state's next chief executive.

Some have already filed letters of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission to run in 2010. Others are circulating the word in other ways.

Palin announced last Friday that she was resigning and would not seek a second term. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will step into the top job July 26, has said he intends to run for governor in the next election.

The list of other candidates includes Sen. Hollis French, a Democrat from Anchorage who oversaw the "Troopergate" investigation that looked into the firing of Palin's Public Safety Commissioner.

Longtime Rep. John Harris, a Republican from Valdez, has said he would like to be Alaska's next governor, as would Democrat Bob Poe, a former commissioner of the Administration department, who announced his intentions well before Palin's announcement.

"Right now, I'm focused on transition," Parnell said Tuesday.

"I think Alaskans are ready for a change," said Patti Higgins, chairwoman of the Alaska Democratic Party. "They want people that will get in there, work hard and finish the job and do things in a professional manner."

Carl Shepro, a political science professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, said Palin's departure could bring more stability to the executive branch and a better working relationship between the governor and lawmakers.

Her leaving now probably is intended to help Parnell, Shapiro said.

"I would imagine what she was trying to do in part was to give Parnell a leg up on the election," he said.

Former Rep. Ethan Berkowitz, a Democrat from Anchorage who held the position of House minority leader, said he intends to become an official candidate in late summer or early fall.

Berkowitz was soundly defeated by U.S. Rep. Don Young in the last general election after Young barely survived a Republican challenge from Parnell.

Berkowitz said the governor's job is attractive because "it is not what you want to be but what you want to do."

Republican Gerald Heikes of Palmer, an Alaska Air National Guard veteran who previously was unsuccessful in a run for the U.S. Senate, also has his eye on the governor's office.

"I will develop our natural resources and every Alaskan will share the benefits. This is not just political hot air, it can work, with your help," Heikes says on his Web site.

Robert Rosenfeld of Homer, a Democrat, also intends to seek the job.

He works for the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council. His page on Facebook says, "Rob is disappointed in Governor Palin's work attendance and follow-through. He promises to show up for work 100 percent of the time ..."

More candidates are expected to emerge as the election approaches.

Randy Ruedrich, chairman of the Alaska Republican Party, said by the time the 2010 primary election is held, Palin's resignation will be a fading memory.

"I don't believe that by the time we get to the primary this will be relevant," he said. "This unique event will no longer be the driving force. The Alaska economy, jobs in Alaska and unforeseen issues will be much more important than something that happened in July 2009."

A possible dispute could be shaping up over the lieutenant governor's office.

During her resignation speech, Palin said that Commissioner Craig Campbell of the Department of Military and Veteran's Affairs would get the lieutenant governor's job. However, during the last legislative session Palin appointed Commissioner of Corrections Joe Schmidt as next in line and that pick was confirmed by lawmakers.

Deputy Attorney General Craig Tillery said it is within the governor's right to pick someone new, but the problem is that lawmakers are not now in session and can't confirm.

He said his office is looking into just how the process would work.

"We are looking into the issue," he said.

I know that the governor announced Craig Campbell, and I anticipate that will occur," Parnell said.

I'm entering my trained ape into the race for Gov. of Alaska. Accordingly, I'm hoping that Alaskans are not jumping on the "change" bandwagon.

ALL Candidates will have the same platform:

I will be a better Governor than Sarah Palin and I WON'T QUIT!

Can you believe this? On the Alaska Gov's official site here is the title on the main page:

"Palin Announces No Second Term"

http://gov.state.ak.us/

Uhmm...shouldn't this say "Palin announces resignation"?

This is how her brain is wired. It is truly bizarre.

Bring back Fran Ulmer!!! Alaskans could have elected a woman of real intellect but chose to vote for Frank the Bank instead. He proved so disastrous we threw him out after one term and anointed Palin. Now that she's quitting part way through her term, maybe Alaskans will learn from their mistakes and vote for someone of substance rather than rubber stamping another Republican empty talking head. But I wouldn't hold your breath America. The Great Land is full of people who benefit from living in state with no income tax, no sales tax, a yearly Permanent Fund Dividend check and recipient of $1.83 for every dollar paid out in federal taxes - all the while decrying Democrats as tax and spenders, railing against "government intervention" and claiming to be independent mavericks. Alaska is a wonderful and unique state in many ways, but it continues to be one of the most politically self delusional, easily manipulated, backward states in the union.

This is info from the Alaskan Trust Fund website, it was specifically set up to:

help Governor Palin continue the job she was elected to do without all these petty distractions.

So, is there not enough money in the fund...

For Alaskans, the time has come to end the siege on our government by political tricksters. Enough is enough. With the help of reform-minded advocates from across our nation, we will stand up for what is right. Your maximum contribution of $150.00 will allow the Governor, her family, and her colleagues to retire their legal debt at no cost to Alaskans and reduce the incentive for mischief by her opponents. Together, we can help Governor Palin and future elected officials turn back the tide of overtly partisan and unnecessarily personal political attacks.

Halfway through her first term as Alaska's Governor, Sarah Palin has done so much for her state and her nation. She has been a champion for much needed transparency and accountability in government. She has sought to protect the fundamental freedoms ensured by our Constitution. And she has never forgotten the importance of lowering energy costs for Alaskans and striving for energy security for America. Still, there is much left to be done, so let's help Governor Palin continue the job she was elected to do without all these petty distractions.

Of the dozen people lining up to be the next Alaska governor, hopefully none will achieve the heights that Sarah Palin achieved on the Ditzy-Meter.

Palin Obituary

Alaska Daily News

From Kyle Hopkins in Anchorage --

Forty percent of Republican voters nationwide say Gov. Sarah Palin hurt her chances of winning the party’s nomination for president in 2012 by resigning as governor, according to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports.

The national polling firm conducted a telephone survey of likely GOP voters after Palin’s surprise announcement that she’s leaving the job. Only 24 percent said quitting helps her chances. Another 28 percent said it doesn't matter either way.

What else did pollsters find?

Palin remains a polarizing figure, even for Republicans. Those polled listed Palin among their top two choices for Republican presidential candidates in 2012. The survey asked who people would vote for in their state's primary. Palin finished just behind Mitt Romney and ahead of Mike Huckabee on GOP wish lists.

But in the same poll, Palin ranked among the two candidates they’d least like to see head the Republican ticket. She tied with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who is still an unknown to many Republican voters around the country.

Palin’s decision to resign played better with conservative Republicans than moderates, the poll says: GOP voters who are Evangelical Christians are fairly evenly divided but a narrow plurality say Palin’s resignation helps her political chances more than hurts them. But the plurality of other Protestants (41%) and Catholics (46%) disagree, seeing the governor’s move as hurtful politically.

How does a governor who quit her job still have the right to pick who will be Lt. Governor. I think if a politician quits before the term is over should loses all privileges for appointments.
