Ahmadinejad Tries To Swat Large Fly During Speech, Fails (VIDEO)

Flies have been increasingly irritating politicians during their public appearances lately, and the latest victim is Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The president was giving an address on state media when the aggressive, and rather large, fly buzzed into the picture and near the president. An annoyed Ahmadinjead gave a quick swat at the bug but clearly missed him, as the fly buzzed back onto the scene.

Sebelius tried, and now Ahmadinejad, but only Obama has beaten our winged enemy with his bare hands.

Before the 1979 revolution, all public figures in Iran wore ties. Shortly after the revolution however, the tie itself began being associated with "Western imperialism", especially after Ayatollah Khomeini branded a large group of intellectuals (who were less religiously zealous than he would have liked) as "tie-wearing cronies of the West". As such, no Iranian official since that time wears a tie, whether in Iran or when on official trips abroad. In fact, for many years after the revolution, the site of a regular person wearing a tie in Iran was so rare that heads would turn on the street and funny comments would be made if someone wore a tie outside. Many people still wore them to parties and weddings and things, but it was very "taboo" during the 1980s.

well, I'll agree with you that I'd love to not button the top button, but ties add nice color. I think the bigger question is... why is he speaking with all those lobsters on the podium?

Because tie makers make a lot of money selling ties. A lot of jobs make it mandatory, so that useless piece of cloth has to be purchased and worn, fuelling the tie-making industry. Ahmadinejad calls ties "the noose of the West" and I agree with him......as I wear my noose.

A dreaded spy drone

I was thinking: "Damn, they have enormous flies in Iran!". I don't think it's a fly. I'm not an entomolygist, but it flies like a locust or moth. I saw something recently on Discovery Channel about robot insects, and they said that within 5 years, they will have robot dragonflies (robots that would be the same size and shape as a dragonfly, with the same flying capabilities and small cameras). So, if the DOD is about 10 years ahead of the technology that we know about, shouldn't they already have them? Maybe that was the newest version of a CIA drone!
