As the media moguls gather here in Sun Valley, Idaho, for their annual schmooze-fest, there is one phrase on everybody's lips as they emerge from their sports-utility vehicles: "paid content."

I don't like what I'm paying for internet use as it is.

Look at what happened when the NY Times tried to charge for content.

I think that they collected about $1.25 a month and most of that was Maureen Doud reading her own column online.

The BBC is vastly better.

1st Rule of the Internet: People won't pay for content.

Try it and you'll dry up and blow away.

Not going to pay a penny unless it's a one stop, one size fits all, all you can eat option where I don't have to remember thousands of subscriptions, deal with thousands of pay portals and otherwise rip my hair out just to surf the web for content.
So, get your act together content providers, make it VERY reasonable in price and allow me to PAY ONCE and BE DONE WITH IT for the year.
I am confident that I speak for a lot of users.
We don't mind paying A LITTLE EXTRA for premium content, but gouge us or make us jump through endless hoops and we're gone.

Watch BBC programming. It kicks American programming in the balls.

It's sad that one has to watch programming from overseas to get anything decent anymore, but you are right. PBS is o.k.

Thank God for books and libraries. There are few greater pleasures than reading, and few greater wastes of time than watching the dreck that passes for "content".

Once again, the mindset of the 20th century kicks in. This is the 21st century and WE THE PEOPLE are NOT going to be buying like in the past, so anyone that thinks we will are in big trouble.
New day, new time.

We do pay for content online. It's called Comcast.

Many people, including myself, are more than willing to pay for some online content. What we're not willing to do is allow ourselves to be gouged on pricing for such content. While iTunes offers half-hour and hour-long programs for $1.99 each, does that mean that the half-hour show is over-valued, or that the hour-long show is undervalued? Why aren't half-hour shows $.99 each?

Streaming online videos offer a real opportunity for these companies, but the real question is whether or not they're willing to forgo squeezing blood from the stone in order to actually maintain a content group of consumers.

He's right. It will happen. Nobody thought Napster would be challenged either.
