CQ Politics :

House Intelligence Chairman Silvestre Reyes has suggested Republicans would be well advised to avoid politicizing the intelligence authorizaton bill later this week in light of evidence that, he says, shows that the CIA "affirmatively lied to" the panel.

In a Tuesday letter to his committee's top-ranking Republican, Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, that was obtained by Congressional Quarterly, Reyes, D-Texas, wrote that the committee has recently received information that reveals significant problems with the intelligence agency's reporting to the panel.

I seem to remember reading about a sign in a CIA building stating
"The truth shall set you free" - imagine spies actually lying - and to politicians, I'm really shocked.

I think that sign was directed at the prisoners that they are holding.

She said what needed to be said but the truth is hard to take when you were part of the lie.

Why would anyone be surprised by a statement that an organization mandated to lie and deceive has lied. Are people really that dumb that they think the CIA is an honorable organization?

Even the Republicans know the truth and the Nancy Pelosi incident was just a scam to add to the GOP's playbook.

More reasons to challenge the idea that CIA should not be held accountable for its part in the disappearances of many Rendered subjects, deaths of people during interrogations, etc...

Duh. Anyone who thought the CIA didn't lie is delusional. Nancy Pelosi deserves an apology.

I fully believe that Nancy Pelosi was not given the full truth. I am sure that the OLC and Cheney and the rest are right in the middle of the obfuscation and BS that characterizes the CIA during the Bush years. Gore told us that over 100 people died in the CIA Rendition program while in CIA custody... and 95 CIA interrogation tapes were destroyed after the
CIA were ordered not to. The International Red Cross can not find many of the Rendered subjects and fears they are dead....
So the history of lies supports her story... The CIA needs to earn credibility.

"It's clear to all of us, Democrats and Republicans, that we have flawed intelligence. The CIA have bad intelligence, the Pentagon had bad intelligence and, for that matter, all of our allies around the world had the same bad intelligence. And so that's why Republicans voted to set up the National Intelligence Directorate to reform our intelligence activities." ~John Boehner

Obama has all the records, information and people who supposedly lied. Remember the CIA is run by the president. If the Bush CIA lied to congress, Obama has the evidence. Obama can release all that information to congress today. So, if as Pelosi's maintaining, the CIA lied to her, why doesn't Obama release the incriminating facts?

We're "looking forward, not backwards," remember? If we can overlook torture, it follows that we will overlook lying as well ...

The POTUS does not run the CIA it has it's own director just like the FBI, get your facts straight.

I'm sorry you need to get your facts straight. I am an Obama supporter but the Director of the CIA reports to the president. Of course Obama doesn't run the CIA directly, the president doesn't run any part of the executive branch directly, but the president can order the CIA director to release whatever he requests and the CIA director can either comply or resign.

Exactly. I would like to see someone propose that the covert ops side of the CIA just be disbanded. If you look at their history it consists of bungled operations (bay of pigs), lies, drug dealing (funding the contras, vietnam), torture (vietnam, central and south america), and even the operations that went "right" at the time (e.g. the overthrow of Iran's lawful government, fighting the Russians in Afghanistan) blew back to bite us in the long run (the Iranian revolution and hostages, Al Queda and 9/11). The CIA was founded ostensibly to fight the cold war. At the time many people thought it was un-american but a necessary evil. Now that the cold war is over I think we should seriously consider dumping the covert-ops division (the part that gathers intelligence and works relatively well would still stay).

True. Beyond the technological advantages they enjoyed, their record is remarkably inept.

We need to keep digging into the mountain of a mess that the republicans left us. We need to get to the bottom of it and put the republican traitors through justice.

The reason no hard evidence has been presented, it doesn't exist. And the Democrats prefer to use the smear campaign since the evidence would contradict their claims and end the debate. So if the evidence existed we would have it already and if it doesn't exist nothing will be released to end the speculation.

Reyes is correct. And the Bush/Cheney Admin deserves to have all of their actions brought to light, but I don't think it would play well politically.
