I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The Democratic National Committee is taking the aggressive step of going after Republican politicians, accusing them of posturing and hypocrisy, when it comes to the president's stimulus package.

On Wednesday, the DNC put out a web ad rapping the House Minority Leader John Boehner for making inaccurate remarks about the infrastructure dollars sent to Ohio through the stimulus. The video, titled "Boehner 'No Facts'" accuses the Ohio Republican of "using baseless attacks to mislead the public about the success of the Recovery Act." It also ties him to the "Bush economic policies of the past eight years that brought our economy to its knees."

What's noteworthy here is not the Bush line -- a predictable line of attack when it comes to browbeating GOP pols. Rather, it is the willingness, indeed eagerness, on the part of the DNC to engage Boehner in a debate over the stimulus.

If there is a particular vulnerability for the White House, it is the scope of president's stimulus spending. And among the places where the recovery package's shortcomings are most obvious, Boehner's home state of Ohio is one of them. A new Quinnipiac poll shows that Obama's approval rating in the Buckeye State dipped from 62 percent in May to 49 percent a month later.

But, at least at this juncture, it seems clear Democrats feel comfortable defending the White House record when it comes to its job creations policies, in part because it's easy to localize the importance of the stimulus. As the DNC ad points out, Boehner's district alone has received nearly $15 million in recovery-related projects.

That said, Boehner's office isn't exactly shying away from the debate. As the House Minority Leader's spokesman, Kevin Smith, told Politico:

"Ohio was very nearly the last state to get the first 50 percent of its stimulus construction money obligated for construction projects, which is ridiculous. As of late May, approximately, no contracts had been signed. Since that time, some contracts have been belatedly set in motion, but the entire process has been absurdly slow-moving -- just as Republicans warned it would be last winter when we called for an economic recovery bill based on fast-acting tax relief for small businesses and working families rather than spending on slow-moving government programs. It's embarrassing that the DNC can't defend its own indefensible trillion-dollar stimulus that isn't working but resorts to desperate tactics like this."

UPDATE: DNC Spokesman Hari Sevugan responds to Smith's response, again tying Boehner to the Bush economic record.

Kevin Smith and John Boehner need a history lesson. It was them and their Republican allies - including Dick Cheney and George Bush that - that sunk our economy into a near depression - while it's the very economic policies and the jobs bill passed by President Obama that have begun to turn things around. What's embarrassing is that after being one of the handful of Republican leaders responsible for pushing our economy over the cliff and putting millions of Americans out of work - that John Boehner would go on national TV and not tell the truth about the projects in Ohio that are beginning to put people back to work - no thanks to him.

It's not only Boehner. Charles Grassley wrote the CBO for an updated report on the stimulus hoping that Grassley can have something to jump on. To the dismay of Grassley, the CBO report (March 02, 2009) estimates that the stimulus "implies an increase in GDP relative to the agency’s baseline forecast of between 1.4 percent and 3.8 percent by the fourth quarter of 2009, between 1.1 percent and 3.4 percent by the fourth quarter of 2010, between 0.4 percent and 1.2 percent by the fourth quarter of 2011, and declining amounts in later years... " In short, the CBO projects the net effects of the stimulus as better than the baseline (that is, without the stimulus). Furthermore, in terms of the net effects on employment, the CBO estimates employment will increase "by 0.9 million to 2.3 million by the fourth quarter of 2009, by 1.2 million to 3.6 million by the fourth quarter of 2010, by 0.6 million to 1.8 million by the fourth quarter of 2011, and by declining numbers in later years. The effect on employment is never estimated to be negative, despite lower GDP in later years, because CBO expects that the U.S. labor market will be at nearly full employment in the long run... " Again, to his dismay, Grassley found no ammunition to support his argument that the stimulus does not work. Otherwise, Grassley would be waving the CBO report at Obama.

It is about freakin time that the DNC finally spoke back! I'm so sick of hearing that the 'stimulus is failing!" "where are the jobs" and having our party silent in response.

Where is the world is our chairman? And our senators on tv?

Maybe we're busy working...

Before I forget - Boehner was quoted as saying his tan is because he spends a lot of time outdoors - but he's from Ohio NOT Florida or Arizona - how does one spend enough time outdoors living in Ohio to get a year round tan like that???

Hehe, Bohner is an odd looking color, not natural to say the least . . . his tan is as natural as Pelosi's face.

I would laugh at criticism coming from the crowd who sent this country on such a meltdown. By the way, how much did this crowd spent on an unnecessary war, and on tax cuts for the wealthy? Orange man has a very selective memory. Did he ever questioned Bush on his spending spree, or did he vote for every trillion wasted?

I did, I know that and thought Bush was terrible on anything fiscal . . . that being said, Obama is one upping him on the spending front now and into the future according to his deficit projections.

Can you at least admit that the massive spending Obama is initiating is a temporary measure to stop the bleeding and his vision for the future involves tightening it back up once the crisis has leveled off? You guys keep trying to make the case that his vision is to continually spend these amounts as long as a democrat is in the white house. You know that's not true and if you don't you have been duped. Stop being so disingenuous.

Finally some brass ones!
As for the Minority Leader's Rep. Mr. Smith's comments (paraphrase) Ohio was nearly the last state to get it's part of the stimulus, so projects have been belatedly set in motion. Do Boehner and his 'people' think that Ohio should have gotten theirs first? I know it wasn't done this way, but doesn't the letter O come pretty far down in the alphabet?

Why would the DNC run these ads?

At a time when the stimulus is going belly up . . . they are claiming complete ownership of it.

It hasn't gone belly up...the economy was just in such bad straits that it's slower in impacting with the big bang everyone expected. Also we aren't in the abyss which had been looming before us because of the stimulus buffering the fall.

Let's be honest, Obama's admin said that if the stimulus passes . . . unemployment never hits 8% . . . if it doesn't pass, unemplyment might hit 9% . . .

What does that tell you? Either the Obama admin had no idea where the economy was or they purposley oversold the package to get it passed . . . neither gives one confidence does it?

You're parroting the same line that Orange Man, Cantor and the other repubs are saying, that the stimulus has failed. Let me ask you this: Do you know how much of the stimulus money has *actually* been spent? Bet you don't. It's currently under 10%. You remember all your Right wing buddy governors who are refusing to accept the money? Or, the ones who want to spend it to reduce their deficits? There you go.

"Don't Mess With Joe: Biden has said it isn't going well as well as planned, admitted their numbers and predicitons were way off when they sold the package.

I didn't think Bush's stimulus would work and I don't think Obama's will work either, in fact I don't think most of the Obama stimulus even has much to do with stimulus.

Oh come on, quit blaming Bush. It's very demeaning. It's also backfiring. The US people are asking these questions, not just Boehner. We are wanting answers. Obama screwed up royally letting Pelosi draft the Stimulus. She threw him, and us, under the bus. He should have scrutinized it with a fine tooth comb. He is now taking the blame, and some would say he should, for her free wheeling ways. Pelosi is not this Presidents friend. The polls are tanking for Obama. They have always tanked for Pelosi.

lol what a mute point on the part of the DNC... Hello theyve got bigger problems... aka... nothing they or OBama have done in the name of "stimulus" has stimulated anything. And because of that failure their approval ratings are in a free fall... LOL

wow its so great that you can judge that the stimulus has failed after less than 5 months and offer no solutions of your own. Better check those "free falling" approval ratings too. President Obama still averages around 60 percent and I'm pretty sure he will never take the free fall your hero Bush took in the 20's.

You're right, Obama's having difficulty fixing the Republican mess. So that's his fault? But it's nice to see a Republican who still has a sense of humor about this. Most have gotten downright sour.

Yeah, Furby...the GOP has nothing to offer except BS, lies, and attacks. The President has only been in office for 5 months.
It took Bush 8 years....8 LONG YEARS...to screw things up.
