I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The Democratic National Committee is taking the aggressive step of going after Republican politicians, accusing them of posturing and hypocrisy, when it comes to the president's stimulus package.

On Wednesday, the DNC put out a web ad rapping the House Minority Leader John Boehner for making inaccurate remarks about the infrastructure dollars sent to Ohio through the stimulus. The video, titled "Boehner 'No Facts'" accuses the Ohio Republican of "using baseless attacks to mislead the public about the success of the Recovery Act." It also ties him to the "Bush economic policies of the past eight years that brought our economy to its knees."

What's noteworthy here is not the Bush line -- a predictable line of attack when it comes to browbeating GOP pols. Rather, it is the willingness, indeed eagerness, on the part of the DNC to engage Boehner in a debate over the stimulus.

If there is a particular vulnerability for the White House, it is the scope of president's stimulus spending. And among the places where the recovery package's shortcomings are most obvious, Boehner's home state of Ohio is one of them. A new Quinnipiac poll shows that Obama's approval rating in the Buckeye State dipped from 62 percent in May to 49 percent a month later.

But, at least at this juncture, it seems clear Democrats feel comfortable defending the White House record when it comes to its job creations policies, in part because it's easy to localize the importance of the stimulus. As the DNC ad points out, Boehner's district alone has received nearly $15 million in recovery-related projects.

That said, Boehner's office isn't exactly shying away from the debate. As the House Minority Leader's spokesman, Kevin Smith, told Politico:

"Ohio was very nearly the last state to get the first 50 percent of its stimulus construction money obligated for construction projects, which is ridiculous. As of late May, approximately, no contracts had been signed. Since that time, some contracts have been belatedly set in motion, but the entire process has been absurdly slow-moving -- just as Republicans warned it would be last winter when we called for an economic recovery bill based on fast-acting tax relief for small businesses and working families rather than spending on slow-moving government programs. It's embarrassing that the DNC can't defend its own indefensible trillion-dollar stimulus that isn't working but resorts to desperate tactics like this."

UPDATE: DNC Spokesman Hari Sevugan responds to Smith's response, again tying Boehner to the Bush economic record.

Kevin Smith and John Boehner need a history lesson. It was them and their Republican allies - including Dick Cheney and George Bush that - that sunk our economy into a near depression - while it's the very economic policies and the jobs bill passed by President Obama that have begun to turn things around. What's embarrassing is that after being one of the handful of Republican leaders responsible for pushing our economy over the cliff and putting millions of Americans out of work - that John Boehner would go on national TV and not tell the truth about the projects in Ohio that are beginning to put people back to work - no thanks to him.

Maybe, this is the republican way of defeating the stimulus. If the funds are not being used to create jobs, then, the plan will fail, President Obama will be blamed, and they can come back as a party.

Well usually lilguy, if you have a company and the manager employs a plan that costs everyone in the organization to have their paychecks cut in half with that manager saying I have to do this so you can see great things very quickly and then half a year later there is still nothing seen and nothing looks good in the horizon, that manager would be replaced, wouldn't you agree? Why shouldn't this elected representative, who is Obama, be any different? If you think it should be different then why? What this man has done is cost every citizen of the United States their freedom and independence in forcing his massive agenda on us without any concern to the voices screaming they don't want it.

So, I'm wondering if the contracts not being signed are a problem of the Ohio politicians, especially since I've seen the recovery stimulus working in our state for months. Hmmmmmmmm! But if they can blame President Obama and it sticks, they can win by default, because no one would ever vote for them for their ideas, which are a continuation of the Bush policies for the last 8 years! We've seen how they work!

Yes. I think as a matter of transparency state governments should be reviewed frequently in terms of how quickly they are allocating the stimulus money. Clearly there are republican governors and state legislators (Sanford, etc.) who are dragging their heals as much as possible. It should be made public which states and parties aren't getting the money out to the shovels and I suspect we would all be unpleasantly surprised how much of it is sitting there doing nothing.

Uhhh, democrats have been in control of passing bills and giving out money for the last 3 years, so where do republicans come into the picture for "the last 8 years?" Democrats are really uneducated in who runs congress and where bills comes from. Bush has nothing to do with it, nor any president. Pelosi has been the one writing the bills for 3 years now, so track back to when all this econmic chaos started (which you'll see was latter part of 2006 into 2007) and you'll see WHO was running congress at that time...hint...Pelosi and democrats. Get your facts straight.

Pelosi's job isn't to "write bills". The main purpose of Congress is to create law. Secondly, no one person has all of the power, nor does one party necessarily. Check out: http://thomas.loc.gov/home/lawsmade.toc.html

Keep pinning these no-nothing republicans to the wall. Now ask people in Ohio, is you state leadership spending the money on job creating projects?

I'm from Ohio. As I said before...Clinton started this downfall with NAFTA. The democratic congress and Obama are making it 500,000,000 worse than any other president ever. Don't try to push this on republicans because we in Ohio can see who is ruining our state and every other one.

What's deceptive about it? There wasn't anything in there about him telling the truth, so it's not deceptive. Do you have a problem with truth as well? Or do you enjoy the truth only if it's against a Democrat?

These polls mean nothing. The man has only bee POTUS for 6 months. It doesn't matter when OH received the funding.Point is, the state had received their payments and contracts had already been signed ad Ohioans were working. Boehner should have known this and Wallace should do research prior to interviewing people.

Alas, he is at Faux ews, so that is asking too much.

From Ohio!!!! Jobs are being lost left and right and the economy is getting worse by the minute. Boehner is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!!

There has never been a Republican that wouldn't lie when the truth would fit better. This is how you have to operate when all your policies and ideology are only designed to benefit 5% of the population.

Remember, before the Civil Rights Act was passed by a Democratic President against the wishes of many of their members, especially in the South, and those same Southern Democrats were then courted by Nixon, the Republicans and Democrats policies and demographics were pretty much the reverse of what they are today.

Which is what made the Mallard Fillmore comic from a few days ago so unintentionally funny (which is the only kind of funny it can ever manage), as he failed to remember that and ended up accidentally saying that the media is a conservative attack dog which attacks liberals at any given chance.

John "Bonehead" Boehner is incompetent. The stimulus dollars are there, it is up to the Governors and state legislators et. al. to get off their asses and get the work going. they have to approve the work, contracts, etc. etc. etc. So that said. As soon as Ohio state government officials start doing their jobs, nothing is going to get done.

If bonehead had a brain, he would start pressuring these individuals to git er done but since he wants this administration to fail, he is going to go to his tanning bed and fry what is left of his brain cells and hope his plan works. These people are so self centered and the people who vote for them are sooooo s.t.u.p.i.d.

Boehner continues with the Republican gimmmicks. The Republicans are using their gimmicks line of attack because there are no substance, no vision, no staetsmen in the Republican party.

the fact that tax relief doesn't help if you are unemployed is never a argument made by journalist when one of these nutty republicans holler this insane notion....which is why i refuse to watch or read interviews of any republican by msm journalist... they're not afraid to question in detail Obama's stimulus package but refuse to question the absurd notion that "tax cuts" is going to help the unemployed

But, since I had to make that correction, I'll add this: Why are the best progressive and anti-GOP ads put only on the internet? Where's the TV buys? VOTERS WATCH TV!!!!! The Internet may be the way to reach younger voters, but they tend to vote only majors. We need to reach people for 2010. Put some ads on the tube!!!!

I agree with you and wondered the same thing. The GOP is constantly slashing away at the Dems and we all know if something is repeated often enough, there are those who believe it, no matter how much it defies reality. The DNC has got to step up it's counter attacks with a higher visibility, and youtube would be a great place to start.

I never liked Newt but he was at least an effective leader. I can't imagine the GOP is happy with Boehner, he comes across as antagonistic, hypocritical and cranky and offers only garden variety Republican platitudes, nothing bold or innovative.

Does anyone in the GOP remember just how long those "fast" stimulus checks took to arrive when GWB destroyed the surplus? It was about this time of year, as I recall, and even then it went slowly and cost a ridiculous amount of money.

By comparison, the tax break in the ARRA has already kicked in for workers. While not a lump sum that makes for good photo ops, that extra 15-20 bucks a paycheck is much more likely to be spent. And the government didn't spend hundreds of millions of dollars printing and mailing checks that many of the recipients then had to pay to get cashed.

As for the flow of infrastructure money, state and Federal systems take time specifically because they have to engage in bidding practices and other efforts at ensuring fair distribution and use. I guess the Dems could have just pulled a page from Bush/Cheney and contracted all the construction to Halliburton on a no bid basis - which would get the money out of government's hands, but I hope we've all learned that's a bad idea.

It took 7 years for this country to gain Independence, more than 10 to realize we needed a Constitution and nearly that long to climb out of the last similar economic event. Give this plan at least a year, okay? Not 4 months since enactment.
