WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is choosing an influential scientist who helped unravel the human genetic code _ and is known for finding common ground between belief in God and science _ to head the National Institutes of Health.

Obama called Dr. Francis Collins "one of the top scientists in the world" in announcing his nomination Wednesday.

"His groundbreaking work has changed the very ways we consider our health and examine disease," Obama said.

The NIH is the nation's premiere medical research agency, directing $29.5 billion to spur innovative science that leads to better health. Collins, an early gene-hunter, would come to the job not just with the scientific credentials, but with a reputation for translating the complexities of DNA into language the everyday American can understand.

The folksy Collins led the Human Genome Project that, along with a competing private company, mapped the genetic code _ or, as he famously called it, "the book of human life."

"It is humbling for me, and awe-inspiring, to realize that we have caught the first glimpse of our own instruction book, previously known only to God," he said at a 2000 White House ceremony marking release of the genome's first draft.

For that work, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award. But he may be more widely known for his 2007 best-selling book, "The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief."

And this spring Collins, 59, was named one of GQ Magazine's "Rock Stars of Science," posing in cool shades as part of a publicity campaign to bring celebrity to science.

Story continues below

John Porter, a former Republican congressman from Illinois who now chairs the health advocacy group Research!America called Collins "a perfect choice."

"He knows the science and he is an outstanding leader," Porter said.

Collins promises to make the NIH's important work more understandable not only for patients but for lawmakers who hold the agency's purse strings, said American Heart Association President Dr. Clyde Yancey.

"The real advantage he brings is the ability to translate deep and complex science to the lay population ... in a meaningful way that allows it to be tangible and actionable," he said.

Collins has discovered numerous genes important for diseases, including the one that leads to cystic fibrosis.

But the true power of genetics, he told a meeting of scientists in Washington last month, has yet to be realized as researchers eventually learn enough to provide customized predictions of which diseases really threaten an individual, and personalized care to respond.

Today, "you can get fancy DNA tests for hundreds of dollars," Collins told The Endocrine Society meeting _ but your better bet for now may be a simple family tree of health, checking what ailments Mom, Dad and Grandpa had to predict your own future. "That's a free genetic test of great power."

NIH is familiar turf: Collins spent 15 years as the NIH's chief of genome research, before stepping down last year to, among other things, work with Obama's campaign. He also helped found the BioLogos Foundation, a Web site formed by a group of scientists who say they want to bridge gaps between science and religion.

I am not very religious, but I am a scientist by profession, and I find nothing inherently contradictory about having strong religious convictions and also strongly adhering to the tenets of scientific inquiry.

The key is to be able to distinguish between God and that best-selling work of fiction known as the Bible.

Obama is a master politician. He tapped the perfect guy to push science with little resistance from the right.

Obama keeps amazing me with his picks.

A joke? he was the administrator for the Human Genome Project. Who would you pick and which scientific work of his do you find questionable?

Agreed. The link between the two is that they are mutually exclusive and should not be mixed.

it's a shame that such a great mind got corrupted by religion...even though i have my issues with him he's definitely more than qualified for a position like that.

As an evolutionary biologist, I can attest that Collins has "created" nothing but problems for those of us fighting the intelligent designers. Collins is indeed a born again Christian and is one of the biggest icons of the ID movement. Collins does not speak out about the separation that needs to be maintained between religion and science, giving the clear implication he accepts mixing them. Craig Venter would have been a better choice, or Kenneth Miller.

Totally agree. Francis Collin wrote a book about his born again moment, in which he was hiking through the White mountains and it all came upon him, his ethereal intangible faith.

And it's been pain in the butt for scientists ever since. If I have to listen to one more of his schlock speeches about faith and science being compatible pursuits....

Intelligent design is a religion, it is not science and only has assumptions and principles that can not be translatable into hypotheses that can be disproved, Therefore, by definition it is not science. On the other hand, there is no harm in believing in it, just as long as it is NEVER confused with science and not taught as such!

I agree with you. It was a bad choice for this reason and either of the above, and many other prominent scientists, would have been a better choice!

Collins is a totally good scientist. His beliefs are what they are, and they don't affect the kind of science he does or supports. There's no indication that he's anti-stem cells or any of that garbage.

Nobody here is questioning his science rubyfoo. We're pointing out the disservice he's doing to evolutionary science by not confirming the separation of science and religion (as Kenneth Miller does so well).

I think you've got it completely wrong. Collins is a fervent christian and a believer in darwinian evolution. He is exactly the kind of example we need to rid ID of its mainstream status among American christians. The more prominent he is and the more he speaks of his faith the more comfortable other Christians will be with the idea of evolution.

I hope you're right rzoroaster. But if Collins is actually against ID, than why does the ID movement use him as their posterboy? Kenneth Miller is a better example of a believer who speaks out against ID as science.

I don't know how reliable his wikipedia entry is, but it says that Collins rejects the ID movement, and works against it.

Sounds like an all around great guy, actually, if the wiki is accurate.

I hope this is correct. If so, it is perplexing as to why the ID movement uses Collins as their icon. Notice the ID movement doesn't use Kenneth Miller, who is a practicing Catholic, as a posterboy.

As long as someone does not bring their beliefs to work, I don't care if they pray to bath water. However, this man's unquestionable expertise in the field of genetics is an interesting choice, considering the "Walmart" of genetically modified food, "Monsanto" is on a breakneck pace to alter the world's grain supply. I know you know the name "Monsanto." I strongly suggest all of us keep a very close pulse-check on them in the now and foreseeable future. Monsantos' strong-arm approach to OWNING the world's food supply is akin to Goldman Sachs approach to owning all the money in the world. Absolutely and completely treacherous to the bone.

If the "ordinary" people of the world do not begin putting two and two together, we will awake one day to a world we would not have imagined in a million years. It is time to get nasty, actually, past time!

Okay. Granted. I suppose most are of exceptional capability. My concern is not that they are "intelligent and capable." But what these people intend to DO with all that brainpower, and who will benefit. Thus far, it is my opinion that Pres. Obama has not made the selections based on progressive qualities. Except for token appointments, this administration is, and has been, shaping up to be an authoritarian, like it or not, rehash and reinforcement of most of the BAD policies of administrations past. So far, there has been precious little for progressives to cheer about. Substantially speaking. If you thoroughly examine many of his selections and appointments, there seems to be "Caution Vibes" coming from way too many of them.

It's incorrect to say that Mr.Collins cracked Human Genome Code . He was the head of the multinational team which lead the research . According to various sources , he was nothing more than an administrator with scientific background . No wonder he has compartmentalized his stone age beliefs while reaping the benefits science .
