Congress shall make no law regarding religion, but this does NOT translate into "ANYTHING AT ALL is considered "religion" if someone SAYS it is "religion".
In other words, the rights of religious followers END where others rights begin, and in a case where someone's rights are trampled, or their personal safety is endangered, the religious rights of a practitioner take a back seat to the rights and freedoms of another.
That's the way it is, that's the way it always HAS been and that's the way it shall always BE.
And YES that DOES include MY right to personal safety when confronted by someone who wears a "religious" or "cultural" costume that hides their identity, their gender, or whether or not they are concealing a weapon, so YES that also means you don't have an unfettered right to walk around wearing a goddam BURQUA either.
America needs to accept the fact that certain savage rituals are incompatible with 21st century living standards in a civilized nation.

Agreed. The US had no problem outlawing bigamy despite Mormon claims at the time that having multiple wives was integral to their religion. However, I have no problem with burqas in general as long as males can parade around in pants big and baggy enough to conceal an entire arsenal ...

I agree. Religion has become the excuse of many a dangerous nut (and all his followers).

On the contrary, you need to come into the 21st century with the rest of us and realize this isn't the sweet little Southern Babtist town of Clute, West Virginia.

Graywolf is right. Santeria is also practiced in Brazil and other latin American countries as well. Thankfully we have laws that protect animal rights. Beware the notion of tolerance in the name of religious freedom.

catholicism, mormonism, scientology, circumcision, there is a hell that you will burn in if you "misbehave" or explore your sexuality, kkk, nazism, communism, imperialism and colonialism subjecting many native people to exploitation on their own soil for greed.

White people are AWESOME and obviously without fault ever.

I am ordering a t-shirt saying " Not an accurate representation of white people"

Okay...time to move into the 21st Century people. All people did crazy things back in the middle ages...including not taking baths because water was thought to be harmful.

We learn and move on. If everyone held on to archaic customs...a lot of screwed up crap would still be happening in this world.

I can't read the article as I will be s! ck, but isn't this against the law, no matter that we have freedom of religion.

Maybe the people that think animal sacrifice should start to sacrifice their own people.

What happened to the animal is no different from what happened to the turkey you had last Thanksgiving.

What's funny is, the people that actually committed this act are in no way as dark as the arms that are potrayed in the picture above, Huffy.

They are not "pagans". Santeria is an offshoot or a perversion of Roman Catholicism and Voodoo. It is widely practiced in south Florida and Louisiana by Cubans and Haitian immigrants. Many homes in those areas feature Santeria statues of Catholic Saints (Santa Barbara) and other shrines. Most often chickens and goats are sacrificed and according to most practitioners of this religion the animals are consumed after their sacrifice. Christianity via the Bible discusses animal sacrifices routinely. Neo-paganism, which is the most widely form of paganism (Wicca, etc) practiced today abhors animal sacrifices and are very animal rights oriented. Many neo-pagan's are in fact vegans. It is Christianity, Judaism and Islam that still recognize animal sacrifice in their scripture, although usually no longer literally.

perversion is a poor choice of words in my opinion. not disagreeing with what you state, just the word choice. that is all.

I'm a priest of Santeria and you are totally wrong in your definition. First, not a religion practiced by Haitians. Not an offshoot of Roman Catholicism or Voodoo at all! The imagary of the Cathoilic saints were only used as a mask to hide the practices they were actually performing. There is no Catholic rituals whatsoever in Santeria.

Santeria is an Afro-Cuban religion with roots in Nigeria West Africa from the Yoruba people. They were an agricultural people who ritually slaughtered the animals they consumed and shared the food with their dieties.

In Santeria, there is worship of one's ancestors, spirit guides and the Orishas. The orishas or primordial energies of creation. They are multidemensional dieties that have been antrhopomorphized to better understand their energies.

The animal sacrifice given to the orisha is the blood. The priests and members present later prepare the meat for consumption. The animals are not killed needlessly.

There are many religions throughout the world who practice these types of rites.

Is it bad because they're some Latinos in the barrio doing it? Or has Hollywood and the media given these religious practices a bad name?

Why do gods love de@d animals so much?

i dont know if you want a serious answer or not but, using the example in the Bible from Genesis, "In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor." Genesis 4:3-5 (NIV)."
the key idea is that it was the "finest". it was a ritualistic way of thanksgiving to the gods of the prefered animals, either through usefulness or beauty. these animals are valued in the culture and historically in sustenance level groups were literally a "sacrifice" to give up due to their high value as either prestige creatures or usefulness for food or labor.
