GM's Beefy Camaro Ad Targets Gay Men (VIDEO)

UPDATE: This promotion has been removed from YouTube...

In a new ad, GM's putting the muscle back in muscle car. (Apologies for the strained metaphor...)

USA Today has news of GM's racy new promo spot for its Camaro, which was posted on YouTube to support Chevrolet Gay Days At The Movies in Los Angeles. The video features "go go boys" in tight bathing suits washing a Camaro. Subtle it is not.

USA Today spoke to a GM spokesperson about the promotion: "Dave Barthmuss, a General Motors spokesman, said the promotion might surprise some 'because you don't see it in the mainstream.'"

GM told USA Today it wasn't specifically targeting gay men with Camaro promotions. The men pictured in the video are "bumblebee boys," a tie-in with the yellow Bumblebee Camaro featured in Transformers 2.

No word on whether or not taxpayer funds were used to buy those skin-tight Speedos...

Why not at least support a company like GM that appears to be supporting gays? Also, gay marriage is now completely legal in a few US states. In both Germany and Japan, full gay marriage rights are not recognized legally (though Germany gives some 'same-sex couple' rights):

I agree with Pooh. Why would you not want to encourage advertising campaigns like this by buying a GM? It's really not GM's fault the US doesn't recognize gay marriage, and they clearly are trying to reach out to your demographic. If the campaign works, it could only encourage more ads targeted at the gay community, and ultimately more tolerance. Am I wrong?

While I'm glad they're paying some attention to gay buyers, this has "bad idea" written all over it. Youtube doesn't just go to your target, it goes to the people who hate them and will boycott your product over it. PR-wise, this is good in West Hollywood but it's going to cause some serious problems in middle America.

I'd agree... But this looks more like a "local" ad. The website listed at the end is for Hollywood. Still, if it helps them sell cars, more power to 'em. God knows, we've been hit with scantily clad women for decades to try to get us to buy cars, why not scantily clad men?

But if you're so busy working on your body, it comes as no surprise that your underdeveloped brain missed the point of the article. It wasn't about the bodies . Let me make it easy for you. Put down the barbells and listen carefully: The story was about using barely-dressed actor/models to lure gay men into buying cars, whether it was a good idea, and whether it will work. But thank you for keeping the dumb bodybuilder stereotype alive.

Considering how much of my tax money goes towards schools that teach kids that I am not legally allowed to be a parent of, and money the military spends kicking gays out......I think it is only fair a little goverment cash be spent on a video of hot guys washing a car. This video made me forget for a split second that I am second class citizen. Way to go GM.

It's not whether government cash is used either. If these were women in bikinis there would be no objection. These companies that were bailed out have to advertise and target audiences and often specific audiences so it's nothing for anyone to b*tch about and especially from those who complain about the economy, which makes practically all of us. It's mostly heteros who will have work because of any sales no matter who the target audience is anyway and I don't think they want to cut their nose to spite their face.
