GM's Beefy Camaro Ad Targets Gay Men (VIDEO)

In a new ad, GM's putting the muscle back in muscle car. (Apologies for the strained metaphor...)

USA Today has news of GM's racy new promo spot for its Camaro, which was posted on YouTube to support Chevrolet Gay Days At The Movies in Los Angeles. The video features "go go boys" in tight bathing suits washing a Camaro. Subtle it is not.

USA Today spoke to a GM spokesperson about the promotion: "Dave Barthmuss, a General Motors spokesman, said the promotion might surprise some 'because you don't see it in the mainstream.'"

GM told USA Today it wasn't specifically targeting gay men with Camaro promotions. The men pictured in the video are "bumblebee boys," a tie-in with the yellow Bumblebee Camaro featured in Transformers 2.

No word on whether or not taxpayer funds were used to buy those skin-tight Speedos...

It's called advertising savvy 101. They're trying to re-brand themselves and appeal to a broader cross section of the car buying market, gay muscle boys included. They're simply doing what Mercedes, BMV, Volkswagon and others--albeit in a far less subtle manner--have been doing all along: advertising in LGBT-themed publications so as to appeal to a target demographic with a fairly sizable/signifigant chunk of disposable income.

By your logic, Subaru's decision to heavily promote its vehicles to the gay & lesbian consumer should turn off the average WRX STI buyer/rallying fan, but this is clearly not the case.

You should check out some of Subaru's advertisements. Many of their ads are geared specifically toward lesbian couples.

It's brillance like this that got GM to where it is today.

Advertising and marketing are not the problem.

Production of crappy quality, poorly designed vehicles is the problem, and no intelligent consumer, gay or otherwise, is going to buy a GM vehicle as long as they continue their "planned obsolescence" design and poor quality, and the top down "you will buy what we give you and like it" management philosophy.

I think the editors of the piece are worried that big muscular straight car guys would be scared off if they knew that their tax dollars were used to make a gay friendly ad. Sad, but true. Blue Collar guys are not well known for their acceptance of anytthing that might question their masculinity
