Ensign

The husband of John Ensign's mistress spoke publicly for the first time today, claiming that the Nevada Senator continued to pursue his wife, Cynthia Hampton, even after powerful political colleagues tried to stop him.

Doug Hampton said that Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn and others urged Ensign "to end the affair and help the Hamptons pay off their home and move to Colorado. But Ensign was so infatuated that he continued, Hampton said, reports the Las Vegas Sun.

He also claimed that Ensign paid Hampton's wife more than $25,000 in severance, which could be a possible felony violation of campaign finance law.

Hampton added that Coburn confronted Ensign and urged him to provide millions of dollars in assistance to the Hamptons to pay off their mortgage, in addition to getting Ensign to write a remorseful letter to Cynthia Hampton.

In the letter, Ensign expresses his shame: "I was completely self-centered and only thinking of myself. I used you for my own pleasure not letting thoughts of you, Dough, Brandon or Brittany come into my mind."

But that attitude changed quickly, says Hampton, who claims that Ensign later repudiated the letter and told him "I'm in love with your wife."

Nope. All instant gratification regardless of the long-term negative effects, although it is more commonly restricted to their lust for money.

Publicly, at least.

Ahh this is how the gop is overthrowing states such as Texas, Kansas and Colorado. They are paying to have gop officials and obviously some of these are complete lunes, move to states to help take over the state governments.

This has got to be what palian is up to, in a month she will mysteriously be hired at fiction news and moved to the lower fortyeight.

Republicans don't mind this stuff as long as it's not another guy he's messing around with. We don't want to ruin the institution of marriage or ... uh... anything like that.

This letter was obviously written with the intention that it be "leaked" to the media. It is superficially contrite and invokes God about 18 times -- just the right medicine Ensign needs to placate his mindless flock of Evangelical sheep and hypocrites (and yes, there are plenty of self-described "Born Agains" in Nevada.) These are the people who helped elect Ensign to office the first time, based on his "Promise Keepers" blathering. And these are the people Ensign so desperately needs now to save his doomed political career.

Even when Republicans are writing about God, they turn out later to by lying.

Ensign and Sanford should be gone. It's a sad comment on their states that they're still in office. Only reinforces negative things that everyone already says about places like Nevada and South Carolina, concerning the hypocrisy and the insincerity.

Professional snakeoil salesmen. Televangelists.

Boy, that letter is a low blow for the "other woman." His involvement was "only thinking of myself," from his point of view. So the whole time he was sleeping with her he was only thinking about himself and his own pleasure? He didn't care about her at all? So it wasn't love, just selfish pursuit of pleasure? As the other woman, I wouldn't want to hear that. I'd be upset about the tone of the last part of the letter as well. It's all put in terms of what God wants, an abdication of responsibility for what he wants in this situation. Of course some women probably find pious pontificating and spiritual ducking of responsibility to be a real aphrodisiac.

He seems to be sincerely sorry.

That said, I agree he should resign of for the good
of the Republican party, and also because reconciling
and repairing his marriage
will be a full time job-and being a senator will
not allow him the necessary time to commit fully
to restoring his family.

He's sincerely sorry, alright. Sincerely sorry that he got caught, that his hypocrisy has been revealed, and that his political career is in shambles. So what's a good Promise Keeper to do to repair the damage? Step One: Bring up the word "god" a dozen times to appear to seem sincere, no matter the sin du jour.

nice how religious folks can simply, blindly, blurt out "it was wrong" and think that everything is a-ok.
