Ensign

The husband of John Ensign's mistress spoke publicly for the first time today, claiming that the Nevada Senator continued to pursue his wife, Cynthia Hampton, even after powerful political colleagues tried to stop him.

Doug Hampton said that Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn and others urged Ensign "to end the affair and help the Hamptons pay off their home and move to Colorado. But Ensign was so infatuated that he continued, Hampton said, reports the Las Vegas Sun.

He also claimed that Ensign paid Hampton's wife more than $25,000 in severance, which could be a possible felony violation of campaign finance law.

Hampton added that Coburn confronted Ensign and urged him to provide millions of dollars in assistance to the Hamptons to pay off their mortgage, in addition to getting Ensign to write a remorseful letter to Cynthia Hampton.

In the letter, Ensign expresses his shame: "I was completely self-centered and only thinking of myself. I used you for my own pleasure not letting thoughts of you, Dough, Brandon or Brittany come into my mind."

But that attitude changed quickly, says Hampton, who claims that Ensign later repudiated the letter and told him "I'm in love with your wife."

This letter is all kind of wrong. Would I be the one receiving this, I'd feel insulted!

When are they going to leave God out of this?

Can't they stand on their own 2 feet without using God as a crutch for everything they say and do?

Well, they'd have to stop believing in God, for that's all it is, it's a crutch.

What kind of chicken scratch writing is that? My God, if that's what's coming out of his brain on paper... it explains a lot about what's coming out of his mouth.

Everyone knows that Republicans are more moral and spiritual than Democrats. The problem Republicans seem to have is that they are so modest about their moral superiority that they keep trying to disguise it as hypocrisy.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to be so moral and so modest about it at the same time, but you gotta love the GOP for trying.

You gotta hate the hypocrisy of their sanctimonious, judgemental actions when they are no better than the next person. Just because Democrats don't wear their religion on their sleaves and beat their fellow man about the head an shoulder with it, does not mean they do not have relationships with their higher power, whomever they choose. Look up hypocrite in the Bible. There are many examples and they have to do with the Pharisees. The examples can be applied to the religious right of this day and age.

This short, handwritten letter contains approx 24 lines. In it, Ensign uses the word "I" 13 times, "myself" two times, "me" two times, and "my" 4 times, and "self-centered" once.
It is obvious to anyone reading this who the most important person is in his life, despite references to the friends, family members, and beliefs he has betrayed. Simple observation reveals his thoughts to be highly focused upon concerns for himself - quite possibly the crux of his problems.

I did a similar word count on Sarah Palin's explanation for her resignation and came up with reference to herself (35 positive) and to everyone else (14 negative). I think if you examined the majority of Republican outreach, you could define the GOP as both the party of NO, and ME.

"I take full responsibility for my actions." Why do people think that statement absolves them of any further responsiblity or retribution. Its like saying I stole the popsicle and I ate it so its gone. Whoops. My bad! I just damaged your life, your family's life and my family but hey, I take full responsiblity for it so let's just forget it ok?

I wonder if Republican "Christians" include false pride in their lists of sin? (An apology to constituents?)

Or, would they prefer to let the party die from a seemingly intentional tolerance of their own hypocrisy?

This is a bunch of bullshit! I am getting sick of how the pols particularly the Repubs have used the scripture and God to cloak their infidelity or homosexuality! Nothing against Gay folks, just against the pols who stock men's rooms in airports or elsewhere! Give us a break and just quit, you are doing our country a very huge disservice!!! They are despicable!!!

Does anybody in the Republican Party -- aside from Karl Rove -- have a triple-digit IQ?

It's good that he blamed his wife on this one, and not on Obama.
