House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has joined the opposition in rejecting a resolution honoring Michael Jackson.

"It's not necessary," said Pelosi, who thinks bringing the measure to a vote would "open up contentious views" that the House doesn't need to deal with "at this time."

In sotto voce, she acknowledged Jackson as a "great entertainer" -- but scoffed when a reporter asked about the resolution.

"We're into the popular culture questions," she said.

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee may have trouble keeping the promise she made at Michael Jackson's public memorial for a House resolution that "forever" honors the late pop star.

Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, took the stage Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and hoisted a framed copy of the resolution, embossed with a gold seal. The measure will be debated on the House floor, she said.

For that framed, embossed resolution to be completely legit, it must first get past some opposition.

Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican who called Jackson a "pervert, child molester, pedophile" in a video he posted on YouTube this week, vowed Tuesday to do "whatever I have to do" to oppose honoring Jackson.

Without mentioning King by name, Jackson Lee noted at the memorial that Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation charges. She blasted critics who "don't understand the hearts of entertainers" and "don't know how they heal the world on behalf of America."

"We understand the Constitution. We understand laws and we know people are innocent until proven otherwise. That is what the Constitution stands for," Jackson Lee said, clutching the framed resolution in front of her shiny white suit.

Her legislation, House Resolution 600, lists several charitable acts by Michael Jackson over his long career and proclaims him as an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian. He is, Jackson Lee said, "someone who will be honored forever and forever and forever and forever and forever."

In the House, non-controversial resolutions honoring a person who has died or carried out a noteworthy accomplishment normally move quickly from committee to the House floor and then pass on a voice vote. The Michael Jackson resolution, introduced June 26, is awaiting action in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, of which Jackson Lee is a member and King is not.

An opponent could ask for a recorded vote, which then requires a two-thirds majority for passage. So far, Jackson Lee's resolution has just one co-sponsor, Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif.

Jackson Lee hosted a 2004 meeting in her Capitol Hill office that brought Michael Jackson together with ambassadors to the U.S. from African countries. At the time, Jackson was considering a tour to raise money to fight AIDS. However, he was also facing child molestation charges and was unable to leave the country without court permission.

Even so, Jackson was greeted by screams, applause and flashing cameras.

Jackson also visited Iraq veterans at Walter Reed Hospital while in Washington.

Learn your roots liberals!

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of LIBERALISM, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened." Norman Thomas, former U.S. Socialist Presidential Candidate

Like what? All they do is fight about stupid things and this is proof. This Michael Jackson bill is not a big deal and they are making it out to be one. Pass the bill and move on. If he has donated and done that much work for charity he should be allowed to behonared like everyone else. I am going to look up how many people have been honored this way and if there are other entertainers or humanitarians that have done less the Michael, I am going to be pissed.

There are bigger things to worry about now than a resolution honoring MJ.

Plenty of people have received similar honors from Congress but not when the economy was is the ishtter like it is now and the country wasn't falling apart.

Priorities.

While you may be pissed that others were honored this way and MJ won't be I'm pissed unemployment is going to double digits and Obama racking up debt that my grandchildren will be paying off.

It's not that MJ wasn't a humanitarian. I believe what Pelosi means by "opening up contentious views" is that this resolution would surely spawn an argument over whether MJ was a pedophile, as clearly some in Congress believe. It would actually be more harmful to MJ's legacy to have this played out in the House of Representatives.

You know what? Better yet, Michael Jackson doesn't need this bill to be honored. Congress is a joke and everyone knows it...they have barely even done anything to help this President, why would we expect them to do something as little as this without fighting?

Let's just get this over with. Since MJ perfected the "Moon Walk", they could go ahead and rename the moon for him.

Right now we need a Congress that concentrates on action so they overcome their well deserved reputation as a

disorganized,

couch potato,

lobbyist infested,

wayward,

ADD afflicted body that needs to shape up and work at the pace this President is demonstrating can be done.

That said, as the greatest giver to charity of any performer and as one who worked for world harmony when they get their work done they might pause to recognize his contribution as they have many others.

I totally dig MJ but don't think there should be anything the government does on an official capacity for him.

This is not an "issue" that needs time spent over it.
Give me a break- we need to enact a resolution to remember somebody???
Can't do healthcare, can't work on that pesky equal rights for all business, can't get homeowners to safety, can't knock down mega corporations...but we're going to spend time on Michael Jackson???
Prioritize, people!

I think that, Nancy should remember that she is also underfire. Her character is being questioned. She also needs to remember who put her in office. Since I was one of them,Nancy will be watched from ,now on.

I'm sorry, I don't follow you. What does this mean? That you won't vote for Nancy Pelosi because she doesn't find it necessary to waste time proclaiming Michael Jackson Day for all time? She gets my vote BECAUSE of that. It's a silly idea. The man was a pop star, not a Civil Rights icon, not a President. He many have donated money to children's organizations and other worthy causes, but please. Be serious. Take a deep breath and put things into perspective.

Not only will I not vote for her,I'll convince all my friends and family and every one else I can. I was there during her early yrs and helped get out the vote for her. If, congress can honor Elvis and Sinartra withouttaking too much time from their schelude they can honor MJ! I have my perspectives straight . In recent yrs, Nancy has not live up to some of the things. I helped put her in office for . Especially on civil rights!

I really like Sheila, she's my Rep and I always vote for her. However, this Resolution is absolutely RIDICULOUS! There is no need for the gov't to do anything regarding Michael Jackson's legacy. That's the jobs of the fans and the family. If anyone wants to build him a mausoleum, do it on your own terms and with your own money.

We have better things to legislate than a pop-star's fame, be reasonable.

I have to say I agree with you. We don't need a document for the government for Michael Jackson to be remembered forever, and ever, and ever, and ever.

I don't think you can legislate greatness, if that were possible, GWB's ratings wouldn't have gone in the toilet. I understand the motive, but I just don't think it's necessary in light of everything else that's on the table.

Considering the low quality of lifeforms currently occupying Congress, the measure should be viewed more as an insult than an honor to Mr. Jackson. Thank you Congressman King and Speaker Pelosi for refusing to insult Mr. Jackson by associating yourselves (sh|+headed losers that you are) with him.
