What's Your Reaction?

The use of tasers by law enforcement is becoming increasingly controversial as more examples emerge of them being used improperly and causing victims serious harm. This New Mexico teen was arguing with her mother, so her mother brought her to a police station to get help (it's unclear what kind of argument they could have been having that would warrant police intervention).

The girl ran off and the police chief chased her and ordered her to stop. When she didn't, he tasered her in the head. The giant scar and stitches in the teen's head show the tasering was terribly brutal, and it's difficult to see how this could in any way be justified.

This is a horrible incident and adding to it is the nasty crude way this wound is closed. The parents should demand a plastic surgeon.

Clearly somebody needs to police the police when they behave as though it is the wild, wild west and the only people that are under the rule of law are the citizens which fund them.

what does anyone expect when communities hire uneducated, insecure, power hungry people and pay them $30,000 a year. You get what you pay for. Idiots who abuse authority. And dear God, we're militarizing police forces. Look at a picture of a cop from the 50s. Now look at one from today. They look like they are ready to battle an alien invasion. It's overkill, dominance, and control.

Law enforcement personnel, in general, resemble the populations they serve. Many are very professional - some (like some in the general population) are blithering idiots.

Is the government is allowed to shoot citizens with electricity solely because they fail to do what agents of the government tell them to do?

Here's a story about a teen-age bicyclist who was tasered five times for failing to respond to a police officer's order to "get off the road." It is written by a lawyer who specializes in bicyclist rights and he asks the fundamental question: do you have a right to not comply with a police officer? It's at the heart of the taser question because nine times out of ten, people are not being tasered because they are threatening the cop or anyone else; they are tasered because they fail to comply with a police officer's order. So, the question is, do the police have a right to shoot someone with electricity simply because he or she is arguing with them or refuses to promptly obey their order?

If police used these things sparingly and had to answer to board of inquiry whenever they are used, it would be one thing. But they are using them pretty much in any situation and often when they already have someone in custody. And while it's true that as a practical matter one is well advised to cooperate with police, I find it difficult to see how we are a free people, with rights guaranteed by the constitution, if the government is allowed to shoot citizens with electricity solely because they fail to do what agents of the government tell them to do.

Gimme a break. Cops will do anything to anybody. They are low class people with low IQs. Basically thugs with a badge

I agree. It is more fun when it's a minority though and much less chance of paying any significant price.

I have seen first hand how police use tasers for "sport". They really get a "kick" out of using this device. I know of one that made the statement, "I can't wait to use it".

I would support a law that outlawed them.

Oh, I'm sure Taser International would allow that to happen.

Unfortunately too many cops are in the job because they like the trappings i.e., guns, uniforms, polcie cars etc.

Good? Then we can get rid of all those who are there for the tasers, plus get rid of the tasers at the same time. I don't see the problem here.

Perhaps this would alleviate the problem. Institute a requirement that whenever a law enforcement officer uses a taser on a "suspect", the officer will, in turn, get tased. This would be a disincentive to overuse.

If properly used, something crazy like that would be totally unnecessary. What's really needed is an intelligent, compassionate police force, something we simply don't have right now.

You really have to be a total animal to taser a fourteen year old girl. He should be locked up.

The problem here is not really with tasers, but with the underlying problem in many police forces across the country, abuse of authority. I think it's time that we start to train our police forces a little better and start to weed out those who have been attracted to the position because of it's inherent power via more stringent psychological evaluations. Too many police on the streets see no problem using very harsh tactics on regular people because they have their own issues to work out, the words 'innocent until proven guilty' mean nothing to them and as such they will often take the complete opposite position believing everyone they encounter to be guilty of something. I understand that it is a stressful occupation, however that does not mean that they are to be given carte blanche.

I raised 3 boys and believe me, I can understand that the mother took her daughter to the police station! With an out-of -control teen, a parent could consider a trip to the police station instead of physical restraint that could only escalate into abuse. With one son, I spent a LOT of time on the phone with the Boystown Hotline.

It's been said by others below, but the taser was introduced to give police an option to use INSTEAD of pulling out a GUN. Obviously, the training with tasers has skipped that part. We've seen video of a mouthy uncooperative grandmother tased in a traffic stop and other examples of taser abuse. We need to start from square one with all police and highway patrol and retrain all to reach for that taser only when the gun is the other option. Running out into the street is not a taser-worthy situation!

You have got to be kidding me. I can't even watch whatever is on this video. The policeman belongs in a mental institution or behind bars. I can only imagine how he treats his own wife and children.

The person who did this should not be in law enforcement or any other job where they have power or control over other people. A nice desk job in a corner cubicle would be best. Maybe in a call center.

Complete lack of judgment. Complete lack of compassion. Complete lack of intelligence.

I don't care about what the kid may or may not have done. 14 year olds need help from adults, not a beat down.

This is what happens when bureaucracies go insane.
