Palin

Yesterday evening, Greg Sargent reported on The Plum Line that one of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's key reasons for resigning -- that ethics complaints against her were draining the state of money -- appeared to be false.

In response to our questions, the Governor's office provided us with a detailed breakdown of the millions Palin has claimed has gone to defending against ethics complaints. It does list roughly $1.9 million in expenditures.

But Murrow, the spokesperson, acknowledged to our reporter, Amanda Erickson, that this total was arrived at by adding up attorney hours spent on fending off complaints -- based on the fixed salaries of lawyers in the governor's office and the Department of Law. The money would have gone to the lawyers no matter what they were doing. The complaints are "just distracting them from other duties," Murrow said.

In other words, while these lawyers might have been free to do other legal work for the state, the ethics complaints have apparently not had the real world impact Palin has claimed, and didn't drain money away from cops, teachers, roads and other things.

The Anchorage Daily News did a thorough analysis and backed up the spokesperson. The ethics complaints took up time that staff could have spent doing other work, but they did not cost Alaska any money.

"Is it a check that we wrote, no, but is it staff hours, yes," Sharon Leighow, spokeswoman for Palin, said of the expenses related to state employee work.

Those state employees would have been paid regardless.

A large chunk of that work went into the state personnel board's "Troopergate" investigation, which Palin herself initiated on the grounds that a legislative probe was politicized. Only three of the ethics complaints are still pending, a fact that makes Palin's explanation seem even less sensible.

Sarah's future. She'll probably have a book and either a radio or tv show and get filthy rich partially caused by the left's obsession ironically makes her more iconic and famous to make money. You see.. your obsessions are just going make the girl rich. So in the future she'll be laughing to the bank while you'll be still be sitting poorly in front of your computer.

Right captain cause that's what it's all about personal wealth. You're right though she is the perfect icon for the current GOP... self absorbed and full of bs.

LEVI KNOWS....

Well based on her LOST FOREVER, FUTURE SON-IN-LAW'S comments today, Sarah gave up the Gov's post because she got better financial offers with less work from her Book, and speaking engagements.

So.....

Now we know what to expect of Sarah when she becomes President !

"See ya fellas, (or my fellow countrymen), I've got to go where the money is" !

(Smile)!.... or better yet..... LOL, LOL

O come on, the bottom line is getting out and cashing in on her image, which has been waning, fading from the horizon. A book deal, possibly a movie, if her image slipped away anymore how could she possibly cash-in?

Bs! Her candidacy would mean a sure win for us democrats. There are definitely rethugs who don't want anywhere near their campaigns. They see her for what and who she really is! Just another gold digging dimwit who can't fulfill her commitment to her state or party. With her husband not being successful at having Alaska secede from the USofA, her hopes of becoming its first president have faded. You should wage a stronger battle to get other New Yorkers to support her for 2012. I am sure they would also be happy to see her run again at the top of the ticket! If she's all you've got, bring it on!

Scared? Are you serious? Train wrecks are serious business but Im not afraid of them unless Im on the train. Maybe you need to get off at the next stop because she is going down in flames and taking the GOP with her.

Um, the funny part is Palin herself. We love to laugh, and she never disappoints us!

As for "the left," - perhaps you need to brush up on your current events. Palin is disparaged today by yet another conservative voice, Kathleen Parker.

Nice try, tho' !

Her candidacy for President of the U.S. would be a godsend to the reelection campaign of Obama. Her "fitness" would be the dominating issue. It is to be hoped that she would agglutinate all the anti-homosexual and anti-abortion forces rendering the candidacy a clearly "reactionary" imprint......from which it could NEVER emerge!

Not sure I understand. It distracted them from their normal duties. That still seems like a drain to me.

I don't like Sarah Palin, but I agree. If the employees are working on her stuff, then they are not getting paid to do their jobs. They might as well be collecting paychecks for playing Wii games.

I just think that, as usual, it doesn't matter what she says.

I think that addressing citizen's ethics complaints or media's requests for information IS their jobs. That's what she has a personal staff for. What else are they supposed to be doing, dusting her portrait?

Wouldn't ethics complaints, filed by citizens, be tax payers business? So the lawyers were not distracted from their jobs, they were doing their jobs.

Even supposing that the state wasn't spending any extra money to fend off frivolous ethics complaints (and yes, they were frivolous), Palin's central argument that her office could not do its job still holds up. The ethics complaints were causing state employees to put off, or just ignore entirely, other necessary work. Thus, they could not really do their jobs.

A "frivolous" ethics complaint would be easily dissmissed in court and not cost much time and money to defend. The fact that you said (they were frivolous) implies multiple ethics violations. I thought it was just the cop firing, which I think to most people did seem to be personaly motivated. How did you determine that these complaints were frivolous? Did you read the court docs or were you there? Are you an attorny? This may be a little off topic but it steams me the way some people throw this frivolous lawsuit stuff around. GW used this to describe medical malpractice cases saying the high cost of malpractice insurance was hurting doctors at a time when malpractice payouts by insurance companies had actually been going down for at least four years. While at the same time insurance companies were raising the rates for doctors. It was the lack of regulation and greedy insurance companies that really cost doctors.

Why would the work done in the legal dept. prevent the executive dept. (Palin's office) from doing it's work?

If the complaints were "frivolous," why did Palin have to respond to one of them by repaying the state thousands of dollars for her kids' travel?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:54 AM on 07/10/2009

But it is a point that those lawyers should've been and could've been working on other matters for the State. I hate even voicing a teeny bit o' support for La Palin, but it's still not like defending herself was free.

That being said, you screw with the system, people are going to find out and come after you. She should be defending herself on ethics charges with her own dime, not the State's.

Wow, a groundbreaking piece of investigative reporting. Instead of working on TAXPAYER's business or legislative advice, these lawyers had to fend off ethics complaints. Now, I do not believe 100% of their time was in fact doing this frivolous task, but even the legislature has said Sarah has been AWOL from daily Alaskan business. So, YES, money (time) was wasted. Get a life HuffyPoo.

The fact that Ms. Palin was AWOL from daily Alaskan business has nothing to do with the ethics complaints. That's why they hired lawyers.

How does time=money when we are talking about employes with salaries that do not fluctuate at all regardless of how much time they work, what they work, how well they do it or when it is completed? Even if she is not doing other tasks or is pulled away from certain tasks exactly what money is being spent that wasn't before?

I mean precisely. Don't give me a vague "resources tied up" statement. What resources and how do them being tied up lead to more costs? Things get delayed maybe. But delays don't mean extra expenses automatically. It might mean extra costs for private contractors and parties who do business with the state but that doesn't mean it costs the State any more money.

Time is not money for a governmental attorney. So where's the added cost? Investigation costs? Sure. Printing out discovery requests and motions and briefs? Sure. But those would not be that expensive. None of that would reach a level anywhere near providing a legitimate reason to quit. She has support staff and a Lt. Gov. for a reason. There's no reason that her distraction would even have to grind her functions to a hault. And if she was really just so distracted that she couldn't do State business why was she traveling around the country giving speeches and going to fundraisning functions? I mean if she was so behind on her work and all.
