WASHINGTON — In the last chapter of a stinging loss to now-Sen. Al Franken, Minnesota's Republican Party has sent the Democrat almost $96,000 to cover lawsuit costs.

Republican Party spokesman Mark Drake said a check was sent via courier Monday to Franken's campaign committee. It arrived Tuesday, the same day Franken took his oath for a seat held open during an eight-month recount and court fight.

Minnesota law required Republican Norm Coleman to reimburse Franken for some costs because the election lawsuit didn't change the outcome. The judgment excluded Franken's attorney fees.

The Republican and Democratic parties have each chipped in to help pay candidate legal bills.

The check included $872 in interest that accrued in the month since Coleman was ordered to pay up.

The Minnesota Democrat's swearing-in marked the end of an eight-month political and legal struggle and drew thunderous applause and a standing ovation in the Senate chamber. His presence gives Democrats 60 votes, enough to thwart possible Republican filibusters.

No. No, no, no!
That's not the reason.
The reason is because Coleman got caught deliberately withholding evidence.
The reason also included Coleman's Law Team being in collusion with its star witness and the witness confessing to that fact.
Aside from the 96-Large that Coleman pays to Franken as "Sanctions". Coleman also got fined 75-Hundred Bucks for trying to deceive the Court.
By the way, "Sanctions" is legal terminology for getting your expenses back, in some degree, from an attorney or party who the Court determines, wilfully did you wrong in a lawsuit.
The Sanctions were part of the decision and orders of the Lower Court affirmed by the Supreme Court upon appeal.

Thank you for the clarification. Too bad, the people of the State of Minnesota are not being reimbursed for the fact that they lacked representation while this ridiculous effort to overturn the outcome of their vote.

Is this coming from the RNC, or from some GOP governor's parents?

That is sweet. It must have pissed them off to have to send him $.

I just have to say Congratulations Al, it has been far too long to wait. And way too long to have to endure Norm Coleman's teeth flashing on HP so frequently.

Al and Frannie are such a cute couple.

Franken's already worth between $4.3 mil - $9.9 mil. How can there be a $5.6 million question mark in ones net worth? In any case, all I can say is, "MO' MONEY.... MO' MONEY".

PEACE

First, a lot of his income comes from writing. That 5.6 mil depends on what day you ask Al "hey, how much cash do you have." You continue to earn money as the book (or books, in Al's case) sell (and Al sells VERY well). Second, he also earns residual income for his acting and comedy work - every time one of his SNL skits is rerun, he earns a small amount of the advertiser revenue the TV network airing it earns selling the commercial time.

So he may have 4.3 mil today, but tomorrow, he might have 4.4. Next year he might be in the 5 mils. Ten years down the line, his value might be 8s or 9s

Third, and this is a hard one for people with no concept of economics, is that the value of the dollar changes daily, and is NOT a constant.

Either way, you've clearly illustrated how very little you know about both Al Franken, and how economics works.

And to think Senator Frankin got 96,000 and he never had to sleep with John Ensign and that Senator Inhofe has his nerve to call Senator Frankin a clown!

Revenge is a dish best served cold. As in cold, hard cash.
