SUN VALLEY, Idaho — The escalating tension between Google and Microsoft didn't prevent the companies' chairmen from sharing a moment of levity Thursday at an exclusive media conference in the Idaho mountains.

As he headed out the door to lunch, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates paused to consider a question about Google's plans to develop a computer operating system that will rival Microsoft's Windows.

Just as Gates said, "No comment," Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt grabbed him gently from behind and said, "It would be better if you didn't make that comment."

The rivals shook hands as they strolled down the stairs to the sound of loud laughter as photographers captured the best picture of the summit so far.

The internet offers a great source of raising taxes. Tax ink cartridges, digital photos ($0.10 each), $0.10 per song or U-tube video, $0.10 per each text or email (goes to USPS). We might add a tax per key stroke or blog read.

This picture just makes me ill. Oh, not Gates and Schmidt smiling, but the so very typical corporate sycohant in the background. I had the fortune (misfortune?) to spend some years around captains of industry and that guy is so typical. The "great ones" can say the most mundane and unfunny things things and their ntourage of hangers-on break into guffaws as if it were the wittiest thing they ever heard. I cringed when it happened, but the CEOs, CLOs and CFOs accept it as proof of their wit and intelligence.

They are all secretly commiserating on the inside about how the 2nd Great Depression in less than 80 years will affect their businesses, let alone what they're used to taking for granted, lifestyle-wise.

Deflation doesn't mesh well with standard Big Media plays a la the 1990s and 2000s. Necessary consolidation will take place across any/all media. Expect demergers as well. I.E. Viacom deciding that Paramount is too expensive to include in the asset batch. Same with Sony.

Further agency consolidations as well. Someone, or thing, will need to deal with ICM and UTA, because those two certainly won't merge with each other.
