Business Insider:

Bing is now the thirteenth most visited site on the Web.

It has a long way to go before it beats Google and has yet to overtake Yahoo, but since its release Bing.com had more visitors than Digg, Twitter or CNN.

I know it's popular to suspect Microsoft of all sorts of subterfuge and manipulation, but I have to say that thus far I am pretty impressed with Bing. The main difference I notice between Bing and Google is that I often end up six or seven pages deep in search results on Google before I find what I'm looking for. Bing's engine seems to have sites grouped in a more useful way.

Example: I'm getting married in September (thank you!), and I searched on "unique wedding bands" on both engines. Google buried me in all of the big online jewelry sites that pay for a plum position on the search results, and while all of these sites did indeed sell wedding bands, they pretty much had the same stuff you find at the mall. Bing, however, gave me sites that weren't even in the first three Google pages, all at the top of the results list. And although we couldn't afford any of them (LOL), they definitely had some unique and interesting wedding jewelry.

Also, I think the Bing ads are hilarious.

PS - I don't work for Microsoft... but I don't think they're pure evil either. Some of their products I hate (Excel), some are just okay (Outlook, Access), and a few approach brilliance (SharePoint, XBox). They're a technology company just like any other, only much, much bigger!

Bing is lame a sh.It is just another search engine, definetely not a decision making machine or whatever it claims to be. Simply MSN.com but without the news or interesting articles.

They have a captive audience.

We Windows developers have only one source of information about Windows: msdn.microsoft.com

In order to find anything on the site, you have to use bing

I wonder how much this plumps up their numbers.

I have a MAC, am not a fan of Gates, think Windowsiscrap, but Bing rocks...

But is Googlemuscling certain image sources to block access to their images on Bing?

Try an image search on Bing and watch what happens...

Bing hasn't left me a choice. To me, I've accepted that it's the only search engine to which I have access, since every time I try to get out it just draws me back in.

Maybe you should try googling for "free will"

I tried Bing a couple of times but I didn't notice anything different from any other search engines, except that it's prettier. Am I missing something?

Don't take my word for it. See the Wall Street Journal review (also in HuffPo biz section) http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/09/technology/personaltech/09pogue.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss

I wonder how many of those "hits" are from IE redirects when it cannot find an address...

Wouldn't be the first time M$ tried something like that

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:12 PM on 07/09/2009

Exactly ... and it seems not to be only when it can't find an address. I got redirected there from an internal search box that was only supposed to search the site I was on. Don't think they deserve any credit for number of hits if they're basically hijacking them.

It caught me totally off guard too.

It's funny, M$ actually releases a FUNCTIONING search engine (seriously, did the old engine ever find ANYTHING of use for ANYONE), and they trumpet it as being the greatest thing ever.

Day late and a dollar short. Plus, I will not use it simply because I wasted money on Vista, and will not be wasting money on Windows 7.

I'll use it when they promise to get rid of their stupid TV ads.
The free association angle isn't clever, it's annoying.

I have only used the Bing Maps. It is much better that Google or Mapquest.

bing also forcibly redirects the IE search page, often without the user's consent or knowledge. This is the same logic for claiming that MSN is a major popular internet destination because IE ships pointing to that page.

Is this the reason for not being able to conduct a simple search anymore without having to go thru layers of sites?
