Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., said Thursday he would invoke privilege if asked about advice he gave to Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., on handling an extramarital affair.
Coburn said he was talking to Ensign about his tryst with a former staffer in his capacities as a doctor and a man of the cloth, Roll Call reported.

Unless Sen. Ensign was consulting with Dr. Coburn about a possible hysterectomy, the physician-patient privilege doesn't apply. And Dr. Coburn hardly qualifies as a member of the clergy under the law, so forget that privilege as well. In any event, no assertion of privilege is sustainable if Dr. Coburn was assisting Sen. Ensign in the commission of a criminal act. His statements are nonsensical and absurd.
Maybe he was advising him on what brand of condoms are the most natural feelings? How to avoid STD's?

Coburn is an example of a politician who is so afflicted with religiosity that he reeks of hypocrisy. I am surprised that this man is giving advice to anyone as a man of the cloth.
Taking Coburn's advice may well cost Sanford his job and family.
The affair gives an invaluable insight into the religious right's embrace of hypocrisy so long as power is achieved. MSNBC revealed that this group wants to place an elite group into government that is above the morality that they preach to others.
These men stay together in some boarding house in Washington and preach pseudo-christianity to each other. Cheating on their wives and paying off mistresses goes with the territory.
I see the benefits of this higher calling - you can tell any lies and cheat on your wife if God has chosen you. Men created the idea of God to promote double standards. Political use of hypocrisy goes way back.
I too saw Rachael's coverage of this last night, I find it frightening. Why hasn't this been covered before on a large scale? This should be reported by CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, PBS, NEWS WEEK, TIME, anything and everything that has a voice to make people aware of what is going on behind the closed doors on C-Street. I think these men are one of the reasons we had GWB for eight years and why our government sold out the working class people in our country. I think the time is right for this ALL to come out I believe the majority of the American people have had it with the far right wing "family values" republican party and I think we are ready to be told the truth and move past this nightmare. That is what I believed, but I read about the book called "The Family" which I intend to buy this weekend and read! These people have rewritten the Bible and honestly believe they are "chosen"!
That is what is so scary -- they are mentally ill and belong to this cult that has decided that they are chosen, and therefore beyond morality! Anything they do is okay, because they are the new "chosen" people! They've decided that for the last 2000 years, people have been worshipping God all wrong and it is up to them to decide which of the poor they will help! They get to "trickle down" upon the lowly poor and they decide who will be saved and who will not by giving power to the already powerful!

They arrogantly believe that they are chosen by God to give more power to wealthy, and that it is their choosing to "help the poor" if they feel like it!
