What's Your Reaction?
Emma Watson

Hermione herself, Emma Watson, charmed David Letterman and everyone watching when she sat down to push the new Harry Potter movie Wednesday night.

The Potter movie premiered Tuesday in London in the pouring rain, and her vintage dress at one point needed a little readjusting and she accidentally showed a flash of underwear.

'Tell us what's going on here,' said Letterman as he held up a picture of the incident.

'This was a small wardrobe malfunction, it happens,' Emma laughed, adding, 'At least I'm wearing underwear.'

She added, head in hands, 'I'm still learning, I'm still learning!'

Watson also confirmed to Dave that she will be starting college in the US this fall, although the institution of higher learning went unnamed.

Thanks to Joanne Rowling again and again for great books on level of Tolkien and Lewis.

Thanks to her also for insisting that British kids should play the main roles in the movies - authentically to the books. The kids did their part very good.

I lol'd at that statement because it is totally unfounded. C.S Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien were visionaries. J.K Rowling is a children's novelest. And while i was captivated by at least 2/4 book of hers i read, it does not lend anything to her actual literary prowess which is negligible to the two greats you mentioned. At least she is better than dan brown.

'nuff said

Gots to disagree. I've read LOTR and the Silmarillion about 9 times each, and I am properly a huge fan - but the Potter books created more interesting characters, not just character types. Tolkien created archetypes and poured a story or breath and majesty, but they are not personal. The Potter books are less majestic, but far more personal and touching. It really seems like a gender difference to me. Both are brilliant.

As for Lewis, I can't say.

Well, I leave you with your 'lol' and 'nuff'. Enjoy considering your statement totally founded.

I would congratulate Rowling on achieving the near impossible: Convincing millions of American children to read for fun. However, I wouldn't quite put her on the same level as Tolkien, who created a new world and new languages. Rowling basically took our world and added what, 3 or 4 different kinds of people.

yeah i agree with you. Tolkien and Lewis are out of Rowling's league.

So making up new languages makes you a superior novelist?

Comparing Tolkien to Rowling is a little like comparing Rod Laver to Roger Federer. Different styles, different eras.

While the world Tolkien created is full of history and language, Rowling's world is far more accessible and personal. Tolkien paints a very dense picture, but Rowling invites you into her world to spend some time with fully realized characters -- heroes, villains, comic relief.

And Rowling writes suspense and action much better than Tolkien. It just seems like LOTR is like an impressive history book(s) more than anything else. I think LOTR and Narnia are getting by a lot on their status as classics, and by the well-done adventure movies based on the books.

In the years ahead, college professors will be using HP in literature classes much more than LOTR and Narnia. And not because they're dumbing down the curriculum, but because the HP books work better as novels and examples of what fiction writing can and should be about -- storytelling, character development, timeless themes...

Oh, come on! Tolkein's 'languages' were based on actual languages that he already knew. There's a helluva a lot of Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon there in both structure and vocabulary. Admirable, but not the super-human achievement that you seem to think it is.

Quality of literature defined by number of added kinds of people?...

If I'd believe that, I'd started to write.

Tolkien, Lewis and Assimov were literary Gods. JK Rowling is a good writer.

C. S. Lewis was on the same level with J. R. R. Tolkien? If you're going to set the level that wide, might as well include J. K. Rowling.

Thanks for lots of discussion.

I have read all responses, and all are valid, at least partially. I also agree that each good writer is too much individual and unique to make 'levels'.

Again, for me Tolkien, Lewis and Rowling stand on same or similar level, take in many aspects of their work same niche, and of course go into very different directions in other aspects.

Each have their own strong and weak written peaces, chapters, books.

Although I'm not at all certain of Ms. Watson's age at the time that photograph was taken, if she was a minor, linking to it could well meet the statutory definition of felony distribution of child pornography.

I'm not saying that's how it should be, but I am saying that's how it is.

your concern is nearly valid mrjm, but I'd like to say shut up, we don't need anymore paranoia, considering everyone is so flippin paranoid, and scared these days with nonsensical stuff, no need to repeat any of it.

She handled it well. The next time she wears a dress that hangs open, just ask the stylist to put a little stich by the area you may not want people to see if the dress flies open. As she said, at least she had on underwear........................
