King

Generally, a politician is headed for trouble when he starts a thought on local radio by saying, "Slavery was abhorrent, but..."

Most politicians have figured out that nothing that comes after that "but" belongs anywhere near the first part of the sentence. Not Rep. Steve King.

King, an Iowa Republican, was the lone member of the House to oppose a resolution to acknowledge the role of slave labor in the construction of the Capitol with a plaque in the Capitol Visitors Center. The GOP representative went on local Iowa radio to explain his decision.

It's all about balance, he said during the radio interview.

"And of the 645,000 Africans that were brought here to be forcibly put into slavery in the United States, there were over 600,000 people that gave their lives in the Civil War to put an end to slavery. And I don't see the monument to that in the Congressional Visitor Center, and I think it's important that we have a balanced depiction of history," he offered in a clip picked up by Think Progress. "Slavery was abhorrent, but it was also a fact of life in those centuries where it existed."

Incidentally, the number 645,000 does not include the millions who were born into slavery. But it's also not the explanation he provided to the Huffington Post previously. On Wednesday, King told HuffPost that his no vote was about honoring the nation's Christian heritage. And besides, he said, there was already a Capitol memorial to slavery.

"In the Capitol Visitor's Center, we agreed to change the name of the Great Hall -- which honored the immigrants that came legally to America -- to Emancipation Hall to honor the 645,000 slaves and their descendants who were brought to the United States more than two centuries ago," he said in a statement issued later. (The slaves were also brought "legally" to the United States.)

"Last night, I opposed yet another bill to erect another monument to slavery because it was used as a bargaining chip to allow for the actual depiction of 'In God We Trust' in the CVC," the statement continued. "The Architect of the Capitol and liberal activists opposed every reference to America's Christian heritage, even to the extent of scrubbing 'In God We Trust' from the depiction of the actual Speaker's chair in the U.S. House of Representatives."

As Think Progress points out, the argument over balance misses the idea that slave labor is being acknowledged for its specific role in building the Capitol, which is why it's being done in the visitors center. And the blog further notes that there is hardly a shortage of memorials to those who died in the Civil War. In fact, there's a book about them all.

A new statement from King wasn't immediately available, but we'll add it when it arrives.

You are absolutely correct. Being from Iowa I can tell you the 5th district is as far right as you can get... it's almost like a state in and of itself. It is unbelievable.

This man is absurd ... in his absurdity he fails to remember that there is no count of African American ancestors tossed overboard ... those who were slaughtered at sea ... along the Middle Passage ! Who can count them, who will remember them ???

Its funny how everybody talks about "we freed the slaves" when 200,000 former slaves fought in the the civil war with about 40,000 dying. Lincoln credited them with turning the tide of the war.

And of the 645,000 Africans that were brought here to be forcibly put into slavery in the United States, there were over 600,000 people that gave their lives in the Civil War to put an end to slavery.

For some reason, Rep. King only counts those who were forcibly relocated here in his comparison with the number of war dead.

A couple of things to consider:

The total slave population of the United States in 1860 was 3.9 million.

Among the 600,000 that King claims who "gave their lives in the Civil War to put an end to slavery" he counts 258,000 Confederate dead who were basically fighting to PRESERVE slavery.

So, taking a reasonable look at King's comparison, instead of a near balance of slaves victimized by slavery and the brave souls who sacrificed to end it, we actually have about 10 slaves in 1860 alone for every soldier who actually died in the effort to end slavery.

If we want to count up the total number of Americans who lived as slaves from the seventeenth century until 1865, Rep. King's attempt at "balance" looks even more absurd.

And the years of Jim Crow ... African Americans continued to be enslaved by laws prohibiting them the right to vote, the right to equal education and services rendered whites ! Does he balance that as well ?

Why is it so difficult for these repubs to be fair to people ?

When people discuss the Civil War they often confuse the reasons why the North fought to preserve the Union with why the South started the war in the first place. Two different things, but people often choose to side with the "it really wasn't about slavery" line because the truth is very embarrassing to blacks and whites alike. For anyone doubtful of this, please look up and read "Ordinances of Secession". You will see in plain print WHY South Carolina and the few initial Confederate states joined the "cause" to preserve and spread the institution of slavery westward. It was really about "states' rights" to own slaves.

What that jugghead neglects to remember is that the end of slavery was a result of the Civil War. Not the cause of it. It was to prevent the South from seceding from the Union, you know, like Gov Perry is intimating here in TX. There were slave owners that actually put their slaves to go fight in their stead during that war. For Rep King to say that 600,000 went to war for that cause and to talk about balance would be to include the slaves that were forced to fight on the side of the Confederacy against their own interest but didn't have a choice. It also includes those that fought for slavery as well as those that fought against. Jeez I would have so much more respect for racists that were just outwardly racists instead of trying to justify their prejudice and racism by going against the entire body of Congress and being that lone descenting voice arguing against recognition to the contribution that slaves brought to this country.

Wrong. The South INITIATED the war to protect slavery. This was the CAUSE for hostilities. The North was just defending the Union. But the North's reason for fighting isn't the definitive purpose behind the war since there wouldn't have been a war at all if the South wasn't paranoid Lincoln was going to end slavery or prevent it in new western states (see Buchanan's presidency). People need to stop telling this revisionist lie taught in schools because it hides historical shame.

Those Christians? Yeah, they deserve a plaque.

You want slavery: Fair and balanced, Mr. King? Then bring a resolution to the floor that asks that descendants of slaves reimburse descendants of slave owners for the price of passage to the New World. 'Cause there's nothing half way about the Iowa of thinking when they're thinking, which they may not do at all.

Rhetoric such as this is outside of the acceptable discourse of congress and humanity.

Notice how he specifically mentioned immigrants who 'legally' came to America. From the way he sets up his argument, I'm inclined to believe that he is largely referring to white Europeans. He wants to establish this contrast between the original name of the visitor's center to the new one. Therefore the legal, white, European immigrants are legitimized while slaves and their black descendants are delegitimized. In fact, such an opposition does not exist, especially since illegal immigration has been happening since America's founding. There is not an antagonistic relationship in honoring these two groups.

King also manages to reference the current immigration debate; again by stressing the legality of those past (thus mostly European) immigrants, he draws unnecessary attention to their legal status. He could just as easily have mentioned past immigrants without having to use the word 'legal'. It seems the only reason why you would use that qualifier is if you want to acknowledge that there is also a class of illegal immigrants (i.e. Hispanic).

One other convenient omission from King's misguided rationale is the fact that slavery is one of the most abhorrent violations of human rights known to man. The fact that it was legal in this country doesn't mean that it was right!! The Civil War was fought because of: the recognition that it WASN'T right; the monumental disagreement between those people who wanted it to remain legal, being willing enough to destroy the country to keep it that way; and those who saw the gross immorality of the entire institution of slavery. Most of the people who fought and died in the Civil War did so VOLUNTARILY, or as conscripts into the armed services of both sides in that war. There are Civil War memorials in a variety of places around this country acknowledging the sacrifices of those people, including at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg. The slaves didn't give their consent to be brought here in chains, beaten or killed when they resisted, bought and sold like cattle, have their families broken up and sold separately, or to be otherwise maltreated. There IS no valid comparison.

Not to worry King, right here in PA, after paying for tickets to swim at a club, African American children were denied the right to do so ... the swim club's response ... the complexion at the pool would change with the admittance of African American children !!!

Why would King want to apologise, especially since he knows ra cism is alive and still well continually perpetrated by him and his like !

Translation: "Because Congress has yet to honor those African-Americans who fought and died in the American civil war with a monument, why should I, Steve Dingaling, join the rest of my colleagues in acknowledging the role that slave labor played in building the capitol building."

Agreed. And let us not forget the many enslaved Africans who died in transit. I find the "body for body" argument horrible. President Lincoln called slavery immoral and it threatened to bring down a nation.
