WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door Thursday to a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise "contrary views" about the pop star's life.

Lawmakers are free to use House speeches "to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "I don't think it's necessary for us to have a resolution."

A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, cites some of the singer's charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian.

Even before Pelosi's comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who posted a video on YouTube calling Michael Jackson a "pervert" and a "pedophile," has pledged to do all he could to block the resolution.

Michael Jackson was acquitted in 2005 of charges that he molested a 13-year-old boy. Those allegations, and his admission that children slept in his bed at his home but nothing sexual occurred, have led some members of Congress to put distance between themselves and any formal honor for the entertainer.

"A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views to _ that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill news conference where she discussed various legislative matters.

Unbowed, Jackson Lee said she will seek support from colleagues who thanked her when she introduced the measure June 26, one day after Michael Jackson died. She said honorary resolutions don't often "pass the next day."

Story continues below

"On this floor we elevate people and doing that we have to work to tell your story," she said after a House vote. But she would need support from Democratic leadership for the resolution to advance to the full House from the committee where it is now.

When members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a moment of silence in the House after Jackson died June 25, some lawmakers walked out of the chamber.

Jackson Lee has pledged that the resolution, now before the House Foreign Affairs Committee where she is a member, would come to the full House for debate. Such honorary measures normally move quickly from committee to the full House and pass on a voice vote.

But Jackson Lee's resolution was in trouble early. It drew only one co-sponsor, Rep. Diane Watson, D-Calif., and was not endorsed by other black caucus members.

From the stage at Jackson's memorial Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Jackson Lee hoisted a framed copy of the resolution.

Change!... Pelosi-Reid Congress Force Troops to Pay For Their Moving Costs
But, please don't question their patriotism.
Once upon a time troops could be reimbursed for unplanned moving expenses if they were renters and their landlord's mortgage was foreclosed.
Not any more.

Interesting... because his performance raised money for the Democratic Party in 2002 when they were going broke. Pres Clinton mentioned this last week http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Bill-Clinton-recalls-Jackson-apf-3985513396.html?x=0&.v=11).

Those Democrats who benefited from Michael Jackson at that critical fundraiser should be ashamed of themselves.

Um... no they shouldn't. I'd like to welcome you to our DEMOCRACY. Giving money doesn't (or shouldn't) get you ANYTHING. Everyone is equal under the law, including people who were chased out of this country and had to live where they make women walk 10 steps behind them.

So, MJ didn't give to these charities to get a House Resolution out of it. The only person to benefit from said Resolution is Sheila Jackson Lee.

Ms. Jackson Lee is well known in Houston for turning up at any funeral she can, usually late and in very bright clothing, to get attention. Enough.

Did he do all that out of the goodness of his heart or to be recognized and applauded? Aren't Grammys, American Music Awards, People's Choice Awards, MTV Awards, a multi-million dollar tribute, 24/7 news coverage, and the looming possibility of a Graceland West enough?
If there was nothing going on in the world right now it might be a little different, and if it was something that would happen swiftly. Pelosi did a smart thing. Rather than even letting it get to the point where it became a debate, which obviously it would, she cut it off so that people can grumble, and then get some actual work done on Capitol Hill. If she let this turn into something, everyone in support of the resolution would only feel worse because then every congressperson who has negative things to say would say them, and in the end it probably wouldn't pass anyway. It would be great if we could continue what Obama has started. Make it clear that the United States government is serious about improving the state of the world. Let the fans and fellow entertainers take care of honoring the Michal Jacksons, as they have been for days and days and days now.

Hey man, instead of giving to charity, why didn't he pay back his half a billion dollar debt instead. Yeah, let see, I'm going to borrow a billion dollars from Bill Gates and give a big chunk of it to charity. Then i'll just refuse to pay back my debt, but I'll be your hero anyway.

Now you just made that up didn't you?? Even if true, Jackson will make twice that posthumously, so Gates will get any money owed him. (Funny with all of the coverage of Jackson's finances this "debt" was never mentioned.)

Congress recognizes American Icons everyday. Congressman Peter King refuses to recognize any African American icons period. However many repubs supported resolutions for Hugh Hefner, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra so its just business as usual.

Well to start with there are millions of people (including me), many of them african american, who right now can't afford decent healthcare. If the dems were to sponsor this resolution the republicans would love it. Rather than debating healthcare the congress would be debating this, and the republicans would pull out all their standard rhetoric time ten claiming the democrats want to honor a pedophile (not saying its true, just saying what they would say). Every hour, every day spent on this resolution means that much less time to finish a healthcare bill, potentially much longer if the republicans can manage to stall long enough until congress is not in session and then we have to start all over again. So do you really want to put healthcare at risk in order to pass a resolution to honor someone who already has more awards than most people ever get?

A resolution is a PIECE OF PAPER written to honor a person's life work or accomplishments. It has already been written, as you see it in the photo attached to this article, and it is specifically for his accomplishments in music, but most importantly for his lifetime of global humanitarian work.

Our financial system is in ruins, and the monetary policy of the country is flawed. We are increasing troops in a country we don't need to be in anymore. We have troops in over 130 countries around the world stretching our military thin and further draining this country of money. Homosexuals don't have equal rights. Our government is waging the drug war which is a huge failure and yet another fire we throw our money in to. We have enough to worry about.

Pelosi made a good call.

The intent of the resolution is to honor his memory - unfortunately, what would really happen is that some on the far right would use the opportunity to spew more hateful words.

After all, they are already doing so - why give them yet another microphone?

I agree with Pelosi.

These "resolutions" are trite affairs, and the constitution doesn't provide for them.

If people want to consider Michael Jackson a legend, an icon, and a humanitarian, they are free to do so. They don't need a self-indulgent resolution to do that.

MJ got off because he was rich and not because he was innocent. He had the money to pay off the kids families and for those he couldn't pay off his status as the King of Pop gave him a get out of jail free card. Pelosi made the right decision. Good on her.
