Panetta Orders Probe Of Secret Spy Program

CIA director Leon Panetta has ordered an internal inquiry into the agency's handling of a contentious and still highly-classified intelligence program that has caused a heated dispute between the CIA and Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee. The move by Panetta appears to be an implicit acknowledgment by the agency that it should have disclosed information about the post-9/11 secret program to Congress much earlier than it did.

The internal CIA probe was described by an official with first-hand knowledge as a review by a senior agency officer--rather than a formal investigation by the inspector general's office. The senior officer is not connected with the National Clandestine Service, the CIA branch whose actions are under scrutiny, according to the official who is familiar with the inquiry.

The internal investigation is good and all, and I feel better about it than if--say--the Bush administration was in power...but if there's going to be an investigation--a fair one--then it should be done by outside, unbiased sources. I'm all for government offices self-regulating and all...but just as the FDA comes behind a private company's self-inspection, and the health department comes behind a restaurant's self-inspection, the CIA should not be able to do self-inquiries and that be that. There has to be some kind of third-party probe into this.

Agreed. Leon Panneta is a very honorable man caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Can you imagine trying to control and placate those egos in the CIA and the White House? I guess Homeland Security will slither in somewhere.

I think he is doing ok with the mess he inherited. I think it is very interesting that whatever it was that he told the Intel Comm would precipitate an investigation so immediately. Must be something big, and probably ugly, and probably illegal and egregious as heck, and probably involving the Bush White House.

Hmmmm. I just can't wait to find out what the secret program was all aout. Whateer it is Panettea wanted to distance himself as far from it as possible.
