Bruno Does Letterman Top Ten List: Reasons To See 'Bruno' (Today! WATCH)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 8/10/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Sacha Baron Cohen made a rare break from character to promote 'Bruno' on Letterman as himself Tuesday night, but he was back on the show Thursday as Bruno to deliver the Top Ten List in a Viennese accent and gold jumpsuit. Maybe his dual identity allowed him to double up on appearances?

The top ten reasons to see 'Bruno' (which opens today) include: "It's like 'Transformers' but not as gay," "Features lots of suggestive worlds like 'Bratwurst' and 'Schnitzel'" and "Bruno is a flamboyantly gay entertainer who makes people uncomfortable, like David Letterman."

Don't waste your money! Bruno is a piece of trash, brilliantly marketed. Aside from a few momentary looks at the vicious underbelly of America's darker corners, an unfunny movie, veering towards basic porno that sets back gay rights 40 years. I'm so very disappointed. No one in my local theater, including myself, laughed much at all--most people had showed up expecting broad satire along the lines of Borat but instead got a film that doesn't begin to understand the world of gay camp. The scuttlebutt from the teenagers in my town is that "It's vulgar." Vulgar? For the teenagers of today's world to say that a movie is vulgar must mean that it really is bad... With a little bit of editing the film might actually have been better but as it is, it is overindulgent narcissism on the part of Cohen that parades around as comic satire. Its release and weekend box office returns shows just how low the satire bar has sunk in 2009. Prediction: will sink like a stone once the word gets out after this weekend.

I just find him sad and needy. Won't go to any of his movies, and won't feel like I missed a thing.

Oh my God - I just saw the Top Ten - this guy acts neither Austrian nor flamboyantly gay at all. He is your classic uptight British as.s. Not even the accent is real. How can anyone with an IQ above room temperature fall for that schtick?

Um.... he's playing a character, or didn't you notice. It's a movie, not real life.

And the movie is a parody. The accent is bad on purpose, the gay portrayal is simply over-the-top... that's what he does.

I am gay, and i can't wait to see it, to be honest. I don't much care about the political correctness. I have found that people get past their fears and prejudices if you're able to laugh at yourself.

And that seems to be what Bruno is all about.

That's two more stories on Bruno today on The Bruno Post. Come on Adrianna, what gives? It is getting old. What is it, two weeks in a row, every day? How much are they paying you?

Meh. Not one of Letterman's 10 Top but I'm still going to go see the movie. Bruno is my fave Sasha Baron Cohen character.

#10 was the best.. I really LOL'd to that..

I would put a good deal of money on saying 9/10 people who loathe Bruno and troll here, liked the Transformers sequel..

Take your cookie-cutter action crap and Megan Fox droolage.. I prefer movies that are entertaining..

Cohen is from Europe - in Europe people make fun of ethnic groups and minorities all the time - much more than in the US. Just stating a fact.
Bruno looks a bit boring to me. However, check out his early character Ali G (on YouTube) that is fantastic!
01:05 PM on 07/11/2009
Excuse me. He is British. And in the UK we do not "make fun of ethnic groups and minorities all the time". It's only a few jerks who do.

The jury is still out on whether Cohen counts as one of those jerks.
02:24 PM on 07/11/2009
The French make fun of the Belgians all the time. Pretty appalling, actually.

BTW, aren't the Scots the butt of jokes in England?
02:27 PM on 07/11/2009
I disagree. IMO he is representing a typical european sense of humor that is generally much less politically correct than the US style (BTW, there is probably good reasons for this difference; culture, history, etc. and one is not better than the other - but there are differences, I think).I havent seen Bruno yet, though...
South Park is an example of US comedy that makes fun of minorities, but there is a tendency of europen humor to have more "bite" I believe...
04:39 PM on 07/11/2009
I'm sorry, but explaining away Cohen's weirdness by saying it's European humor doesn't work. Watching him is just as awkward in Europe as it is in the US. There's some funny stuff, but mostly wince-inducing. I'd say most people on both sides of the Atlantic are a bit like Letterman looked that night.
