Cash-Strapped Boston Zoo May Be Forced To Close Doors, Euthanize Animals

The Boston Globe:

The Franklin Park Zoo, an inner-city Boston institution that has drawn generations of city and suburban families, may be forced to close its doors and possibly euthanize some of its animals as a result of the deep budget cuts imposed by Governor Deval Patrick, zoo officials said today.

Most of the animals species in zoos would have gone extinct already without zoos. Maybe that would be better? Some zoos are very nice and have more natural habitats than other zoos.

No. There are bad zoos, that's a given. There are fewer though in recent years because people became aware.

But in addition to the good reasons callmeslice23 below says there's another important reason. The people. Children being able to go and see how wonderful a bear or an elephant or a gorilla is, when otherwise they'd never have contact, see them and smell them and watch them, goes a long way toward helping them appreciate life and the natural world.

Putting down those animals should be the last option

Wouldn't it make more sense to return the animals to their natural habitats rather than kill them? Contrary to what some people think, an animal's natural habitat is not the concrete jungle called a zoo.

Yeah, letting putting them down would be a better option than putting them back in their natural habitats where they would likley slowly starve to death. They really would not be capable of surviving having spent there whole lives in captivity.
