Grave markers are seen scattered on the floor of a shack at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Ill., Friday, July 10, 2009. It is same room that the original glass-topped casket of lynching victim Emmett Till was found rusting by Cook County officials investigating at the cemetery where four workers are accused of digging up bodies to resell plots. The 14-year-old Chicagoan was killed in 1955 after reportedly whistling at a white woman during a visit to his uncle's house in Mississippi. Nearly 100,000 people visited the casket during a four-day public viewing in Chicago. When Till was exhumed in 2005 during an investigation of his death, he was reburied in a new casket. The original casket was supposed to be kept for a planned memorial to Till. (AP Photo/M. Spencer Green)

ALSIP, Ill. — Some horrified relatives who searched Friday for loved ones' plots at a historic black cemetery at the center of a gravedigging scheme near Chicago instead found more human bones on the grounds, prompting authorities to close the cemetery and treat it as an expanding crime scene.

"I found bones out there, I found individuals wandering aimlessly around" who also found bones and other things, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Friday night in announcing that Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip would be closed to the public. He did not offer details.

Families still will be able file inquires at the cemetery, which is the burial place of civil rights-era lynching victim Emmett Till and blues singers Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington. Dart said he hoped it would reopen to visitors within a week.

Thousands of families have visited and inquired about the fate of graves since four former Burr Oak workers were accused earlier this week of dumping hundreds of unearthed corpses in a scheme to resell plots. Each was charged with one count of dismembering a body.

Shareese McLemore, 36, of Kankakee, Ill. said she fears her mother's grave was tampered with after she saw the normally green grass around the plot was damaged and burnt.

"I have a sadness. It's bringing back memories," McLemore said. "I feel betrayed by the people who worked there."

About 5,000 grave sites were being investigated by Friday, but Dart acknowledged difficulty in gauging how the number would grow because cemetery records either don't exist or have been altered or destroyed.

"We can't get our arms around how many people are supposedly, allegedly, buried here," Dart said.

Story continues below

Dart's office has received more than 1,350 complaints _ up to 30 percent of which allege loved ones have been relocated. Up to 50 percent cite missing headstones.

While Till's grave site was not disturbed, police said investigators found his original iconic glass-topped casket rusting in a shack at the cemetery. The inside of the casket was shredded by wild animals living in it, police said.

Till was killed in 1955 after reportedly whistling at a white woman during a visit to his uncle's house in Mississippi. Nearly 100,000 people visited the casket during a four-day public viewing in Chicago, and images of the 14-year-old's battered body helped spark the civil rights movement.

When Till was exhumed in 2005 during an investigation of his death, he was reburied in a new casket. The original casket was supposed to be kept for a planned memorial.

One of Till's cousin's said she was appalled the casket was found in such poor condition.

"It's part of history, it's part of our trying to put a family to rest," Ollie Gordon said Friday during a visit to the cemetery.

Authorities said three former gravediggers and a former cemetery manager made about $300,000 in the scheme that stretched back at least four years. The four sold existing deeds and plots to unsuspecting customers for cash, authorities said. They then allegedly dug up hundreds of corpses and either dumped them in a weeded, vacant area of the cemetery _ which authorities had labeled the original crime scene _ or double-stacked them in graves.

Hundreds of relatives, some clutching maps of the 150-acre site, walked through rows of graves on Friday hoping to find their family members' plots undisturbed. Dart said closing the cemetery was necessary because it would be irresponsible to continue to let families wander around "to find nothing more than tears."

The sheriff said one family sought 10 grave sites and found none. And although Burr Oak plans indicate a designated area for infants called "Baby Land," none of those grave sites could be found, Dart said.

"More people have not found relatives than have found them," he said.

Dart said two funerals at the cemetery on Thursday also went wrong. One person was initially buried in the wrong plot and another body was sent back to the funeral home because the plot was already occupied by another body, he said.

Illinois Comptroller Daniel Hynes has started the process of revoking Burr Oak's license, and authorities said at least one lawsuit has been filed on behalf of families. Hynes said the cemetery's Arizona-based owner, Perpetua Inc., is cooperating with authorities.

The suspects, who were being held on bond, were former cemetery manager Carolyn Towns, 49, Keith Nicks, 45, and Terrence Nicks, 39 _ all of Chicago _ and Maurice Dailey, 61, of Robbins.

Towns also allegedly pocketed donations for a Till memorial museum, authorities allege, though she has not been charged in connection with those accusations. Court documents show she was fired from the cemetery in late May amid allegations of financial wrongdoing.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office said Towns is being represented by a private attorney, but she didn't know the name. The Cook County public defender's office said Friday it was representing the three other defendants but did not yet have the attorneys' names. Attempts to reach family members were unsuccessful.

Cremation is the answer. A burial plot is a waste of money and land.

So any remark about Jesse Jackson that isn't positive is from a "whitey snot"? Please get some objectivity. He seems to just be hovering around the country waiting for a chance to jump into an issue and get more camera time. I'm a child of the sixties & I used to admire Jesse Jackson but he has lost respect with many people by never staying out of the limelight and never, never seeing both sides of an issue. He lost his objectivity many years ago. Too bad.

Jesse Jackson and his family have lived Chicago for many years.... thus he has family buried their. He has many friends and family buried there just like myself and many other people. This time, its quite personal for him.

Also, Jesse Jackson was one of Dr.King's right-hand guys and was there from when the Civil Rights movement started, thus meaning the death Emmett Till meant something to him just like all the veterans of the Movement. Did you connect those dots?

Jesse had the 'wind knocked out of his sails' when it was discovered 'whites' weren't involved in this and the owner is a black man from Texas. He actually had to be a real reverend for once. And not shake-down anybody for $$$......Plus, give him the benefit of the doubt in that he may have a relative buried there, also.

$300,000 isn't a lot of money among 4 people over 4 years. That's chump change.

OK, this is as disgusting as it comes. My heart goes out to all the people whose loved-ones remains were tampered with.

Having said that, perhaps some of you can inform me on my following thoughts:

I realize this is a Black-owned cemetery and all the remains are of African-Americans. I also realize all the alleged culprits in this crime were black.....But I'm nosey, are there any white and hispanic employees at this cemetery? What happened to diversity, the laws which say you have to be an Equal Opportunity Employer, the hiring according to the percentage of the population in the area?

Its not a black owned cemetery and the area where the cemetery is located is near a majority black population...

They showed the picture of the owner on Channel 2 news. He's from Dallas, TX and is black. The cemetery is a short enough drive from towns like Blue Island, Crestwood, Evergreen Park, Chicago Ridge, Worth, Oak Lawn, Palos Hts., Palos Hills, Palos Park, Posen, Midlothian, etc. for people to go to work. You agree? And where the majority of the population is NON-black....I myself live on the southside of Chicago in the South Deering neighborhood (South Chicago), so please, your not talking to some out-of-stater.....So why no diversity in hiring? Very fair question.

what I think is so sad about this story is that the would invoke Tillman into this.

His resting place was not disturbed.

And as for the original casket is concerned, If the family was SOOOOOOOOOOO concern, then WHY didn't they take the casket with them and had the thing restored if it was so important to them?

Don't get me wrong, the people responsible for the cemetery should be delth with severely, but the Tillman connection is no ones fault but the Tillman family for NOT taking the casket since 2005.

It is not the Tillman family's fault. According to other articles, Ms. Towns, the cemetery manager, suggested to the Tillman family when they re-buried him 2005 that a memorial should be planned, using the old casket, and that SHE would get it going raising the money for it. She had a website collecting donations for this memorial, and instead pocketed the money. How truly sick.

The boy's name was Emmett Till...NOT Tillman. Also maybe you don't remember that some family members did not even want to exume the body back in 2005. It was proposed by the U.S. Justice Dept. to run DNA testing to make sure it was Till's body that was actuyally buried.
Where would you have suggested the family "take" the coffin? There have been 1000's of deceased whose coffins have been exhumed for one reason or another, and I have never heard of the family "taking the coffin" nor have I heard of some service advertising that exhumed coffins could be restored, displayed, or made reusable.
Is there such a business? Inquiring minds would like to know.

From what I read, there was a younger gravedigger who was practicing his backhoeing skills who came across the bones and debris. When he asked one of the accussed gravediggers about it he was told to ignore it. However, he decided there was something wrong and he contacted the Sherriff's office.
Unfortunately, when businesses are allowed to regulate themselves, this is what can happen.

Someone, made a statement about the lack of of comments on this crime, trying to make this awful deed these criminals have done political but (some) of us can read thru those lines. This crime is not political, this is a disgrace to the human race and everywhere I went yesterday everybody was talking about this injustice, my office, all over the building people were outraged and caring about those poor people who had to come and see if their love ones were one of the many who were displaced. We have seen in the past year in a half what greed looks like and how ugly it's face can be, and it is no respect of persons. All people who committ a crime should pay for it, and clearly this one merits a incarceration, my heart go out to those people who feel they have to re-bury their mother, father, child, uncle, sister, cousin, friend. Politics, has nothing to do with this injustice so lay that where it should be but not here, there are hurting people as we all can see, who don't want politics in this but want justice and hopefully they will get it. Period.

The thought of this is unconscionable. As time goes on, fewer and fewer things are being regarded as "sacred." Regardless of religious persuasion (or lack thereof) this is desecration of holy ground.

Besides Emmett Till, many of those buried at Burr Oak were older African Americans who didn't find peace during while they were alive, and now their final resting place was disturbed -- and their "final" peace also (at least in the mind of their loved-ones).

After seeing what happened here, I find it interesting that so many critized and denigrated Bu.rris for trying to secure and ensure HIS final resting place, that he had the means and opportunity to plan for. (Part of it is cultural, part is his own preference. Either way, whether or not it is OUR preference, it is HIS business.)

I fear that we're all being exposed to so many mean-spirited, ignorant and crude things on a daily basis, that we're all becoming de-sensitized to man's inhumanity to man and the resultant suffering. That "bottom-line profit" motive thing is becoming a real game-changer . . .

I hope these families soon find peace and resolution for the final disposition of their loved ones.

Yes, this is a dispicable act v. the human race, as you say........However, that person is right, also. We have 200 comments as of this comment. Had it been white's doing this, every black with a grudge, every 'lefty with a gripe, every liberal media-person with a cause, would be commenting. The 200 would indeed be 2000 or far more.

What is wrong with these people, no one with any heart could do this-no respect for the dead. Here in Ga there was guy who was supposed to be cremating people and instead dumped all the bodies. The story of Emmett Till brings me to tears each time I think about it.

In Sweden, where my ancestors came from, it is normal for a family to pay for the upkeep of cemetery plots. When nobody is left to pay the upkeep (as was the case with my forebears, who all moved to America in the 1850's) the bodies are dug up and reburied in a common grave, and the plot is sold to someone new who can pay for it. Economically this makes a lot of sense, as the cemetery is always kept up and is always profitable because there is income one way or the other. A humane policy like this would have kept this sick outrage from happening in Illinois.

I agree with this process. If you have a burial plot, just like a house, you must maintain it, and that means paying a yearly fee. While I sympathize with the families -- this was a disastrous heinous crime -- let's face it, cemeteries have to be maintained. Either that or cremate the body.

Are you kidding ! ....Jesse is all over the cemetery. He practically is hanging on to Sheriff Dart like a shadow. All this free camera time. It must eat at him he can't blame whites for this, though..........But this story has totally made folks forget about his son, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. paying HIS WIFE $295,000 for so-called consultation fees......So Jesse, Sr. will keep this scandal alive for a long time.

What in the world are you talking about? For the love of God, this is an abomination. It's abhorrent. What is there really to say though. I wept when I heard this story. I can't even imagine what I would do if it was my mother or father's grave this had happened to. How dare you equate posting on a website with the internal agony people might be feeling just hearing this story! How dare you even attempt to politicize this!

It does not matter what color these criminals were, the injustice they have done is finally out in the open. I don't care if your white, black, hispanic, ect.... this was clearly a low thing to do, all for the (love) of money. All four will have time to think about what they have done, and see that crime did not pay but they have to pay time incarcerated.

Actually, if you would watch the documentary "Eyes on the Prize", in Part 1, Till's cousin"Simeon Wright" said that Emmett said "Bye Baby" to the white woman in the store, and she told her husband. He and his brother dragged Till out of his uncle, Mose Wright's house, and he was tortured and killed.
Unfortunately, it does not matter that Till's body was not disturbed. The people who put their loved ones there, and nowadays PAY for the upkeep of the place have been forever damaged.
And people, UNDERSTAND, that we're not sure if these same things have NOT taken place at OTHER cemetaries....the cemetary business faces FEW regulations.
Maybe we should all check and see who are the REAL owners of the cemetaries where OUR loved ones are. Just like banks can sell your mortgage to another entity, apparently so cemetaires change owners,,,,,and the public is not notified.
