Yesterday, Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced his intention to make the city entirely coal-free by 2020, and turn to clean and renewable energy instead. Inspiring? Yes. Possible? Maybe not so much.

To me, man may be contributing a little to CO2, which is contributing a little to Greenhouse effect, which contributes a little to the natural warming -- but warming is good for humanity (historically). The idea of going off coal means just means you'll have more expensive power that you import from other areas anyways. So you'll hurt the economy and people -- and have no real effect.

Here's a video I made on the whole global warming argument: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1JCWLfT0TM

Thanks, skys. You've just given me the quintessential liberal response to virtually every point. Personal attack in easily remembered and quickly typed format.

California already buys a lot of power from Canada. BC is blessed with a lot of Hydro capacity and the grids are inter-tied so they load share.

If the mayor can cut through the bureaucracy and march directly to the goal, he will be successful.

And exactly how do you think LA is going to power that city? Wind....laughable at best. Solar...? There isn't enough room on the buildings to power the city. Greenies already put the brakes on a 'solar farm' for one CA city. The whole 'green energy' is charade.

One thing LA has is geothermal. And drilling equipment used for oil wells that can be used for geothermal wells. They could have clean unlimited energy forever with geothermal.

The last time I looked cali was being run by a republicant gov., and being ruined by a republicant minority.

LA has geothermal capabilities up it's veritable ass. They also have the well drilling equipment.

After that, its practically free, non-polluting energy forever.

LA is the PREFECT place for rooftop solar!

Air conditioning is peak load, sun is great, California's electricity is 31 cents all the way to 200 cents per KWH for air conditioning peak costs. California has all sorts of finical incentives for homeowners to install solar PV.

1.85 per peak watt! retail!

See my profile for more links and proof.

The city can also do BioChar or all organic waste for Bio Fuels.

Both rooftop solar and waste BioChar work forever!

As long as China is burning US coal from decapitated mountains in Wise County, Virginia, California will never be coal free, they are putting two or three new coal fired power plants on line each week, it only take three to seven days for that pollution to reach LA. END MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL !!!

There are no coal plants near LA. All their coal based power comes from a land far, far, away, where environmental devastation can't be seen. If they want cleaner energy, wind turbines should be built in LA county. When I attended the AWEA www.awea.orgg) show a couple years ago in LA, I learned no one has been able to put up 1 single wind turbine, no matter the size.

I'm sorry I don't understand what you are saying. I'll admit there are coal producing plants near LA. Thank God. They are so dirty. But your comment about not having one single wind turbine? Where are you from? There are many of them out in the desert here.

LA is a lot cleaner than it was 40 years ago. Thank goodness for that. We just need to make it cleaner.

That picture is misleading. L.A. hasn't looked like that in years.

I'm and LA County native and I agree. The photo is probably an old one. The air quality has improved loads in the last 2 decades, although there's still room for improvement, serious improvement. But unless EVERYONE in CA is willing to make drastic lifestyle changes, including big business (Ha!) we can reasonably expect only smaller continued improvements.

I was there a couple of years ago and I would have categorized it as "needs significant improvement".

Ten more years of breathing poison? Hey, it's your world. How about NO more years of breathing poison?

I guess that's too much devastation for the oil and coal companies, after all, they need to keep stuffing those billions into offshore banks.

Breathe deep.

How about this LA.
Stop building new roads and freeways and stop demanding that stores build HUGE parking lots for cars.
You have build your city for the CAR. ! Now the car wants more food !
Blame your city planning departments which are stuck reading text books from 1955.
