LOS ANGELES — Detectives investigating the death of Michael Jackson are looking at his prescription drug history and trying to talk with his numerous former doctors, the Los Angeles police chief said.

Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, told ABC News in an interview that he believed "foul play" was involved in his son's death. But in the interview aired Friday on "Good Morning America," Jackson did not elaborate.

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton told CNN that police are waiting for the coroner's report before ruling out any possibilities in their "comprehensive" investigation into the sudden death of the 50-year-old pop star two weeks ago.

The coroner's report will determine the cause of death and hinges on time-consuming toxicology tests.

"Based on those we'll have an idea of what we're dealing with," Bratton said Thursday. "Are we dealing with homicide? Are we dealing with an accidental overdose? What are we dealing with?"

Bratton said detectives are gathering evidence, including items seized from Jackson's rented home and arranging interviews with his many physicians, but the police chief deferred to the coroner to determine the cause of death.

"The next move really is his," Bratton said. "We're not marking time waiting for his report."

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the state attorney general's office, which keeps a database of prescription drugs, are assisting investigators.

An attorney for Dr. Arnold Klein, one of Jackson's many physicians, told the Los Angeles Times that the dermatologist was subpoenaed for medical records, which he turned over to the county coroner's office.

Bratton refused to discuss details of the case.

Jackson, who died June 25, had a well-known history of using prescription medications, especially painkillers. Following his death, Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse who had worked for Jackson, told The Associated Press she repeatedly rejected his demands for the potent anesthetic Diprivan, also known as Propofol.

Jackson had multiple doctors, friends and staff who came in and out of his life. Which people were being interviewed by police was unclear because the LAPD has said virtually nothing about the probe.

Joe Jackson said he didn't know anything about drugs his son was involved in.

"I don't even know the name of them," he said. "I do know that whatever he was taking was to make him rest because he had been working so hard."

Police towed a doctor's car from Jackson's home hours after he died and said later it could contain medication or other evidence. Coroner's officials also said Jackson was taking prescription medication but declined to elaborate.

Meanwhile, Joe Jackson told ABC that he and his wife, Katherine, should have custody of Michael's three children. "They'll grow up to be strong Jacksons," he said.

He said Michael's daughter, Paris, who spoke at the Tuesday memorial service, was taking the death hard and was crying whenever Michael's name is mentioned. He said that she might have a future in the entertainment business along with the youngest son, nicknamed Blanket, who "can really dance."

OMG! He is the only reason I am NOT convinced that Debbie Rowe should NOT get the kids. I sure hope Janet steps up to the plate and challenges for custody.

I know what you mean. I keep thinking " I wish Janet would step in" but then again, how do we know that she isn't all f'ed up in the brain too. Idk ...these poor kids. Latoya doesn't seem all that healthy either...The other brothers scare me.
I think that Debbie shouldn't even be an option.
I wish I could take care of them.

And that's exactly why Katherine should not have custody of the children. She has no power over that man. If she has the kids, he'll have unfettered access to them and they'll become nothing more than money machines for Joe, just like Michael's childhood. And people will support it because they can't just let those kids alone.

Oh no. Please someone keep him away. It's been reported that MJ wanted his kids to follow their dreams and no one else. Kathrine Jackson better have a tight grip on those kids.

I feel sorry for MJ's kids.

SaddieMcCall is absolutely correct. As well, there is an audio interview with MJ in Rolling Stone magazine where he commended his parents for providing him with the values, ethics and career training/guidance without which he would not have been successful.

Seeing the tragic ending of Michael's life and the tortured years before it, are you sure that being as successful as he became was actually a GOOD thing?

Calm down people, Joe is not going to do anything to Michael's kids, just remember the eyes of the world are looking on.

As long as Joe is in Vegas the children will be okay.

Okay, now I'm changing my position on this. Someone else needs to raise those children--Diana Ross, Debbie Rowe, the California foster system, wild wolves; at this point it doesn't matter. Just keep them away from THIS guy.

This man is clearly--CLEARLY--all about promotion and money (emphasis placed on money). I think he did quite enough by taking Michael's childhood away...no need to damage Michael's children.

Creepy. Just: creepy. Why does the family continue to allow him to speak?

Chill out; As long as that man is in Vegas he won't put a finger on Michael children.

can somebody send me a reference to where MJ said "my father abused me"
i think that it is sad that people who have no first hand knowledge of the jackson family life
in the 1960s or for that matter what the norms of parental disciplining was before the current
era of protests over fly killing and fish killing, are tryng to make Joe Jackson into a monster.
PEOPLE, in the 20th century it was common practice for parents to discipline their children
with spanking and flogging. i and everyone i grew up with, was also on the receiving end at home and at school but none of us even in hindsight regard that as abuse. .

I heard an interview with Barry Gordy on the radio recently. He disputed the common storyline of Michael not having a childhood. He said every weekend the Jackson children and his children got together and played baseball together at his house. He said that he saw Michael wearing shorts and other summer atire, and never once saw any bruises or other evidence of any physical abuse on Michael or the other kids. He said that Joe was strict, but from what he observed, he never thought he was abusive. Barry Gordy also said that he had asked Michael once if he would have traded it all away, to be a normal kid and not be a superstar - Michael was very clear on that. Barry Gordy's opinion was that Michael was successful because it was HIS goal to be a superstar, he wanted it more than any of his siblings.

Most of the WORST forms of abuse are not visible as bruises. Give me a break!

I wonder if Joe made Paris go pick her own switch to whip her with for breaking down at the service.
