LOS ANGELES — Detectives investigating the death of Michael Jackson are looking at his prescription drug history and trying to talk with his numerous former doctors, the Los Angeles police chief said.

Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, told ABC News in an interview that he believed "foul play" was involved in his son's death. But in the interview aired Friday on "Good Morning America," Jackson did not elaborate.

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton told CNN that police are waiting for the coroner's report before ruling out any possibilities in their "comprehensive" investigation into the sudden death of the 50-year-old pop star two weeks ago.

The coroner's report will determine the cause of death and hinges on time-consuming toxicology tests.

"Based on those we'll have an idea of what we're dealing with," Bratton said Thursday. "Are we dealing with homicide? Are we dealing with an accidental overdose? What are we dealing with?"

Bratton said detectives are gathering evidence, including items seized from Jackson's rented home and arranging interviews with his many physicians, but the police chief deferred to the coroner to determine the cause of death.

"The next move really is his," Bratton said. "We're not marking time waiting for his report."

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the state attorney general's office, which keeps a database of prescription drugs, are assisting investigators.

Story continues below

An attorney for Dr. Arnold Klein, one of Jackson's many physicians, told the Los Angeles Times that the dermatologist was subpoenaed for medical records, which he turned over to the county coroner's office.

Bratton refused to discuss details of the case.

Jackson, who died June 25, had a well-known history of using prescription medications, especially painkillers. Following his death, Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse who had worked for Jackson, told The Associated Press she repeatedly rejected his demands for the potent anesthetic Diprivan, also known as Propofol.

Jackson had multiple doctors, friends and staff who came in and out of his life. Which people were being interviewed by police was unclear because the LAPD has said virtually nothing about the probe.

Joe Jackson said he didn't know anything about drugs his son was involved in.

"I don't even know the name of them," he said. "I do know that whatever he was taking was to make him rest because he had been working so hard."

Police towed a doctor's car from Jackson's home hours after he died and said later it could contain medication or other evidence. Coroner's officials also said Jackson was taking prescription medication but declined to elaborate.

Meanwhile, Joe Jackson told ABC that he and his wife, Katherine, should have custody of Michael's three children. "They'll grow up to be strong Jacksons," he said.

He said Michael's daughter, Paris, who spoke at the Tuesday memorial service, was taking the death hard and was crying whenever Michael's name is mentioned. He said that she might have a future in the entertainment business along with the youngest son, nicknamed Blanket, who "can really dance."

Keep that man as far away from the grandchildren as possible. Custody was willed to the grandmother - not the grandparents.

Because of the man, the court will soon give custody to their mother.

Because of that man, Katherine may lose custody. She also stood by when there was physical abuse. A parent who abuses their child usually has an enabler and it's the other parent.

Well, I've got to say it......If Michael thought his father was such a terrible person (and his mother stood by while all this was going on), why on earth would he give guardianship of the kids to his mom. His father seems to be in the picture, therefore wil have some say in how the children are raised.
My dear father, god rest his soul, died many years ago when he was only 49....I do know, however, that if he had outlived his children he would never act like Joe Jackson. I guess that's because dado loved us unconditionally, and we weren't his meal ticket.

He probably thought of his mother as just as much of a victim as he was.

maybe because he did not think his father, Joe, would outlive him.

Mr Greedy is now making an all out effort to whip the family into his way of thinking.
That's who Michael was thinking of when he named the place 'Neverland.' He had been beaten up enough in his young life, to NEVER be beaten again. So to you Mr Greedy go away and beat it.

Joe Jackson needs to take his A** back to Vegas where he has been living the last few year with his Asian Mistress.

You saved me a post. Whatever Michael's failings, they pale when compared to this monster of a father.

Joe really needs to shut the heck up, retire from whatever part of show business he remains involved with, and just watch the kids grow up without his interference.

And, with that, I am retired myself, from commenting on Michael Jackson stories. There can be no practical discussion with most people regarding his life and death. I have a jaundiced view of his personal life but recognize his achievements. Unfortunately, lots of other people either refuse to recognize his faults or simply dismiss his achievements because of his faults. I wish a happy medium could be reached, but it seems impossible. Suggest anything unpleasant about him and you are a hater to large numbers of commenters. Be happy-happy about him and you are considered an apologist. I wish we could all accept that the middle is probably accurate.

How anyone would want those kids to get into show business is beyond me. If I were the judge I would put them in a boarding school where they could be with other children, study, and pursue their own desires. Joe Jackson is like the John Huston character in Chinatown....so scary.

Oh, if Michael wanted to pick a celebrity to raise them, maybe it should have been Brooke Shields,,she is stable and seemed to really want to do what is right. She also knows the pitfalls of being a celebrity child.

"They'll grow up to be strong Jacksons," ...what is a "strong" Jackson?...one who can earn the family money no matter what and the "family" can take advantage of them?

OMG...Joe, I understand you're in mourning, but please stop talking to the press. STOP. Everytime you open your mouth, something ridiculous comes out of it

You're 80 years old, enjoy your golden years in VEGAS, and stop looking at MICHAEL'S kids as they were Powerball tickets!

Joe Jackson is a dang leach. He will leach off those grandchildren. I hope the court will make sure that he has no decision making in the upbringing of these children. MJ hated his father. All you have to do is the Will. I think that Janet should get these children. She seems to really love them and she doesn't have children and seems to be able to make her own money without leaching on MJ. She has established her own music career. Joe bullies his way with his wife. He is looking to get on the gravy train of the children. I pray the judge sees through that.

What is wrong with ABC ?
First Martin Basir and now , this morning they started their morning show with an interview with Joe Jackson.
Two most unreliable source...
Click, off with the TV.

It was Michael's answers in the Basir interview that did him in, not Basir's questions.

can somebody send me a reference to where MJ said "my father abused me"
i think that it is sad that people who have no first hand knowledge of the jackson family life
in the 1960s or for that matter what the norms of parental disciplining was before the current
era of protests over fly killing and fish killing, are tryng to make Joe Jackson into a monster.
PEOPLE, in the 20th century it was common practice for parents to discipline their children
with spanking and flogging. i and everyone i grew up with, was also on the receiving end at home and at school but none of us even in hindsight regard it as abuse. in fact, in hindsight, i wish my
father had been more like joe Jackson, in that regard. He had nine children and none of them have a criminal regard, only instead- global fame as the talented Jackson family.

ok so i watched your link to the mj interview. he said his father was a strict disciplinarian.
at no time did he say "my father abused" in fact, there is a radio interview in Rolling Stone
magazine where he went in great detail in commending his parents for instilling him with
positive values and work ethics.
If they all ended up fulfilling the black criminal, white stereotype - i guess the joe Jackson haters would have projected their own complex on some other black man.

did your parents presence at times make you throw up?

Michael stated alot that in childhood his father would walk into the room and michael would vomit?

Does a "spanking" cause that type of reaction?

Joe tried to plug his new record label while being asked about his Son that just ppassed away.

Real father of the year material.
