Racism is alive and well in this country.

I had to talk business with a stranger in a very red part of this state. He got off on politics, bashed Obama for the stimulus package, went on about socialized medicine (ignorant of the fact that no one has proposed such a thing), declaring that all countries with socialized medicine have terrible health care, and ended with saying he wished someone would "cap" President Obama.

As the conversation went on it became clear that he had lifelong great insurance because his wife retired from working for a federal court. He thought anybody without a job could just buy some health insurance. He though there were state mental institutions to take care of a certain mentally ill drug addict (Reagan closed all those and dumped the mentally ill in the streets).

Where do these people get this misinformation?

I believe that the the G O P have this mindest due to the conservative media, rather than report verbatim, it gets twisted into a version that best suits them. Or spliced together as I have read recently. I am a liberal, I will admit it to anyone, however, I do have freinds in the south that chant this mantra that they all spout. Recently a friend sent an email with a clip from one of those 24 hour news channels about the immigration laws and in the forwarding text made it sound like it came from our current administration. I gave it the benefit of the doubt until I noticed the crawl at the bottom mentioning a past AG and the spike in the crude oil prices. As anyone with a sense of curiosity I did a search on the news items, turns out this was from the previous administration and roughly 2 years ago. I came close to replying to the sender but thought against it, no reason to start something with someone when it will fall on deaf ears.
It is sad to think that people out there are that hateful, that the truth is clouded, and that racism to this horrendous extent still exists.

That she won in the end is just sad. I feel for the decent Republicans still left in that part. They are trying to save something that doesn't want saving or something that doesn't even want them. Even if you are conservative I don't see why anyone non-white would want to be apart of the Republican party with people now being overtly racist and not suffering anything negative as a result of it. I'm not saying join the Democratic party but why stay where you aren't wanted?
