Panetta

The Washington Post has more details on the secret program that CIA Director Leon Panetta revealed this week had been hidden from Congress since 2001.

Current and former administration officials familiar with the program said it was not directly related to previously disclosed high-priority programs such as detainee interrogations or the warrantless surveillance of suspected terrorists on U.S. soil. It was a intelligence-collection activity run by the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, officials said. It was not a covert action, which by law would have required a presidential finding and a report to Congress.

"This characterization of something that began in 2001 and continued uninterrupted for eight years is just wrong. Honest men would question that characterization. It was more off and on," said a former top Bush administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the classified nature of the issue.

A Bush administration official told the paper he was certain that, if the nature of the program could be revealed, it would be seen as "no big deal."

However, Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) told the Huffington Post that when she and other members of the House Intelligence Committee found out what was kept secret "the whole committee was stunned, even Republicans." And Newsweek reported that while an official said, "'You could argue that it never really took shape' ... The implication is that whatever the details of the program, it carried risks that some officials at the agency strongly felt might not be worth taking."

Democrat congressmen reveal secret information from a meeting about secret intelligence data for political purposes and this is acceptable. If what the claim is true every one of them should be kicked off the committee for revealing secret intelligence information. If what they say isn't true every one of them should be kicked off the committee for lying about secret intelligence information.

Umm,... as I understand it,... none of the Congress-critters in question have revealed details about the program in question.

They have just revealed that they were 'shocked' when the details were revealed to them.

Get over it and yourself.

It is illegal for them to in any way to "disclose, discuss the content, disclose the topics of or the nature of the information"

Oh no....the old "catch 22" game again!

The bottom line is that if the "program" violated our laws and broke our treaties, the information should be made public and the people involved in authorizing it should be tried for their crimes. I would be willing to bet if the individuals revealing this were republicans, you would not be criticizing it!

Imagine all the things that could be called "intelligence correction."

Some very chilling things come to mind.

T0rture fits well. If the guy isn't telling Ch3n3y what he wanted to hear, t0rture will "correct" the statement.

If even the Republicans were stunned, there is no way I will believe that this was some "intelligence collection"!

This entire thing smells to high heaven! We deserve the truth!

Harry Truman Wapo December 1963

"For some time I have been disturbed by the way CIA has been diverted from its original assignment. It has become an operational and at times a policy-making arm of the Government. This has led to trouble and may have compounded our difficulties in several explosive areas."

Truman regretted only one thing in his political career: the establishment of the OSS, the precursor to the CIA.

I'm sure that the same "honest man" the WaPO source says would think it no big deal if they knew the details is most likely the same source that thought the run-up cheerleading of the WaPO and the NYT for the war in Iraq that has killed thousands of Americans; was also no big deal.

The suspension of Habeus Corpus in America? No big deal.

CIA extreme rendition? No big deal.

It's funny, we have more information and are willing to open up the CIA, (supposedly a secret service operation) than we do on the Federal Reserve Board. Who is hiding what?

This was a serious attempt to attack and block the civil rights and liberties of every American here and abroad. Period. It had NOTHING to do with terrorism, they know it was a huge lie, it was about keeping the American people in control, thier control with nothing to fight back with. It was treason in its highest form. Lying to the public, Trying to circumvent the laws, civil rights, treason. Inventin g terrorists and trying to sell a life of fear to maintain this police state....Treason. Using government agencies under false pretense and them making them thier scape goats? Treason. Killing American soldiers for greed and covering it up? Treason. Torturing innocent people knowing they were not those who attacked us, serious international laws broken, treason. Any way you cut it, they knowingly broke the law, and need to be charged with treason.

What do these people think the CIA does, bake Girl Scout cookies? It always amazes me when liberal daydreamers confront stark reality.

Stark reality? The stark reality is the fact that we have laws in this country, whether you like them or not. To use the excuse that because the CIA does it means it is okay does not hold water. Especially when you have someone like Cheney, with his bunker mentality, who has never felt the need to answer to the American people We have an elected government and have the right go know what our "elected" officials are doing.
And it is ludicrous to state that liberals are daydreamers simply because we expect our leaders to be accountable, sinsce there was no accountablility in the Bush Admin. At least we ask questions and pursue answers and do not follow blindly like many on the Right do. That's what Liberals do.

Hilarious. We're the daydreamers? Who believed there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Who thought our military would be greeted in Iraq and Afghanistan with flowers and kisses? Who thought the war would be over quickly and the citizens of these countries would see us as "liberators"? Who declared the war in Iraq was over five years ago? Let's see..... what other acts of daydreaming have caused us serious pain... Oh the economy!!! WHO believed the market place would decide what's best for everyone and that unregulated capitalism would lead to a healthy economy? Who believed that Bush was a simple country ranch dude?
