LOS ANGELES — The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said Friday that "Bruno," the new film starring Sacha Baron Cohen, reinforces negative stereotypes and "decreases the public's comfort with gay people."

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios, who saw the film Friday, said that "the movie was a well-intentioned series of sketches _ some hit the mark and some hit the gay community pretty hard and reinforce some damaging, hurtful stereotypes."

In a style similar to his popular Borat character, Baron Cohen brings Bruno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista, into ridiculous situations with unsuspecting everyday people.

Universal Pictures, which released "Bruno," sought GLAAD's input on the film and invited staff members to advance screenings, Barrios said.

The organization "shared a number of concerns, and unfortunately, the scenes that we had the biggest concerns about remained in the film," Barrios said.

One such scene shows Bruno in a hot tub with his adopted infant son and two naked men involved in a sex act.

"Scenes like that don't help America understand the hundreds of thousands of gay families who get up every day, do the carpool then rush home to make dinner and be with their children," Barrios said.

Similarly, the movie's mock marriage scene "doesn't help Americans understand the lives of gay couples who are denied the rights and protections of marriage in 43 states," he said.

Universal Pictures maintains that "Bruno" is a satire that "uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia."

"While any work that dares to address relevant cultural sensitivities might be misinterpreted by some or offend others, we believe the overwhelming majority of the audience will understand and appreciate the film's inarguably positive intentions, which we've seen demonstrated whenever we have shown it," the studio said in a statement.

Barrios said that while he believes the filmmakers had good intentions and that some moviegoers will see the satire, "some people in the gay community will be as troubled as GLAAD is that the movie doesn't decrease homophobia, but decreases the public's comfort with gay people."

The more things are out there like this, the more the shock value wears off.

It's a movie, take a chill pill. The best way to break down stereotypes about those of us in the gay community is to have a sense of humor about things. Yes, some scenes may be in poor taste but being sensitive to everything makes us look self obsessed. So some of the movie may be boorish. Ignore that part.

He's not breaking down stereotypes he's building them up to bursting and beyond. This film is bad timing to the nth degree.

When GLAAD says that the (clearly photo-shopped) photo of Bruno holding his baby while in a hot tub with gay men gives people the wrong picture of gay families, they are only partly right. The thing is, those who are opposed to gay parents raising children are that way because they have ridiculous ideas of what gay families are like. Bruno's antics demonstrate how ridiculous those ideas actually are.

I thought it was great satire. It's definitely not for concrete thinkers. Has there been any word of Austrians taking umbrage with it?

Thr Governor of California made a brief statement today. Something about "girlie-men" and that, due to the economy, he would wait until it was on cable. Not sure if that counts as umbrage.

If he waits too long, he'll be pirating cable.

They like it because it centers on dumb and prejudiced Americans. No surprise here.

No matter the short comings or strengths, Baron Cohen's films still struggle under the weight: they suck.

He's a very limited and/or acquired taste...that is increasingly finding itself MARGINALIZED because no-talent is now passe...in politics (Palin), governing (Obama)...and, thankfully...the arts/culture...now that the pendulum is swinging to QUALITY again.

The fact this guy continues to get movie deals speaks more about the limitations of Hollywood and NYC media - than it does about the tastes of the American people. Any sideshow money and/or freak show at a carnival can get an audience. Any ethnic group can get laughs laughing AT OTHERS, while attempting to elevate oneself at their expense.

Anyone with a brain KNOWS Mr. Cohen is laughing AT and not with those he mocks. His gig...and the moguls who fund his trash...is to get YOU to believe is is the reverse...and pay for it.

As I said, this is a limited and/or acquired non-taste.

way to work an obama dig in there. as if he came into office with a surplus and no wars, like his predecessor.

Dear Abby,

I've been uncomfortable with Kazakhstani people ever since Borat. Will Bruno affect me negatively towards gays...or just Austrians?

Easily Influenced.

Gay or not gay... there's always dominant role played by one person...

We should not look at movie as gay or not gay...

It is a comedy, but extremely funny, humor...

It just shows, not matter what you are... there's always all kinds of characters...

yes! straight or gay or whatever... think equal...

Just saw Bruno. It was hilarious, it plays on one's ickness factor. A few people left at different intervals.

well considering the cost of a movie ticket or two these days, I'll bet a LOT more people would have walked out if they didn't pay so much.
Another point; even "mediocre" movies don't cause people to walk out...not even "a few". So it's probably safe to assume this movie was worse than mediocre -- it was just downright BAD.

Am i wrong to think some gay men are alot like Bruno? Did he really just pull this material from his a** or is there some truth to the stereotypes made of ALL of us, whether gay or not?

Thats a myth. There is not truth in ALL stereotypes. I'm not gay, but some stereotypes can be easily started and spread just by people making stuff up. I'm not referring particularly to the ones in the movie.

GLAAD does alot of great work. But this organiation and a few others complaining about "stereotypical" gay behavior irritates me. As a gay man I know many men who are effeminate, outgoing and often outrageous. They are a refreshing part of a gay community that should embrace all sorts. Unfortunately many (most?) gay men have an aversion to being type-cast this way, and will do whatever they can to avoid being seen as "weak" fems. Many (most?) gay men do not find effemintate men attractive, so theiy prefer to push them to the margins. It is a sad form of discrimination among a community that is supposed to be tolerent. of one another.

The ironic thing is that it is effeminate gay men and masculine lesbians were in the forefront of the gay rights movement. These were people who preferred to live as themselves-no matter how affected-rather than hidein closets. I say "bravo" to every man or woman who choses to be themselves despite what is 'acceptable" or normative. "Hurrah!" for limp-wristed f@ggots and big bull-dykes everywhere!!!!

Word. All this hand-wringing about flaming gayness has a hint of self-loathing to it (I may be gay, but at least I'm not THAT kind of gay). I love my loud and proud gay friends. He//, I wouldn't know how to put eyeliner on if it weren't for them!

Oh please. The over-the-top ridiculousness of Bruno is why people find it funny. If it was exactly how gay people were, people wouldn't go see it.

I'll tell you who decreases the public's comfort with gay people: people like Perez Hilton, and the gay men who actually act like Bruno.

So you can be gay, as long as you're not too loud about it?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:29 AM on 07/12/2009

Yeah, basically. You can be yourself without being obnoxious.
