LOS ANGELES — The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said Friday that "Bruno," the new film starring Sacha Baron Cohen, reinforces negative stereotypes and "decreases the public's comfort with gay people."

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios, who saw the film Friday, said that "the movie was a well-intentioned series of sketches _ some hit the mark and some hit the gay community pretty hard and reinforce some damaging, hurtful stereotypes."

In a style similar to his popular Borat character, Baron Cohen brings Bruno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista, into ridiculous situations with unsuspecting everyday people.

Universal Pictures, which released "Bruno," sought GLAAD's input on the film and invited staff members to advance screenings, Barrios said.

The organization "shared a number of concerns, and unfortunately, the scenes that we had the biggest concerns about remained in the film," Barrios said.

One such scene shows Bruno in a hot tub with his adopted infant son and two naked men involved in a sex act.

"Scenes like that don't help America understand the hundreds of thousands of gay families who get up every day, do the carpool then rush home to make dinner and be with their children," Barrios said.

Similarly, the movie's mock marriage scene "doesn't help Americans understand the lives of gay couples who are denied the rights and protections of marriage in 43 states," he said.

Universal Pictures maintains that "Bruno" is a satire that "uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia."

"While any work that dares to address relevant cultural sensitivities might be misinterpreted by some or offend others, we believe the overwhelming majority of the audience will understand and appreciate the film's inarguably positive intentions, which we've seen demonstrated whenever we have shown it," the studio said in a statement.

Barrios said that while he believes the filmmakers had good intentions and that some moviegoers will see the satire, "some people in the gay community will be as troubled as GLAAD is that the movie doesn't decrease homophobia, but decreases the public's comfort with gay people."

Once my mother said to one of my brother's gay friends (My brother and i are both gay. 7 years apart.)
"I know all about Sodom and Gomorrah."
My brother's friend replied "I bet I know a lot more about them than you."
Ahhhhh.

Mij13 I'm a *NOT* Fan of Mij13: "Attacking GLAAD on this is like agreeing with the bullies."

Attacking the movie is enabling the bullies: oh, dear -- let's not do anything to UPSET the bullies! They might pick on littlegayboys! Then ARREST them! And give the littlegayboys some extralargeTASERS.

I'm gay and I thought the movie was funny as hell. I can not imagine straight folk that have issues with homosexual's watching this movie, period. It's graphic, to say the least and parodizes the stereotype-- while highlighting the absurdity of homophobia. That's my two cents. It was worth watching.

To be honest, I'm just so sick and tired of hearing about it that I just can't wait for this movie to be over. I've never been more annoyed by the endless fabricated "news" stories here at HuffPo about this person.. I mean you have two or three a day, it seems.

Talk about over-exposed and boring.

Look at Borat, Sasha Baron Cohen puts on ridiculous characters and exposes the real ridiculousness of regular Americans. Its more defamatory to your average Joe... plus he gets away with most of it cause Bruno is supposed to be Austrian.

Cutting across all political lines, all social classes, all minority groups, all economic levels: puritanism. The impulse to repress or censor art is universal in the American psyche, and it's why we're a cultural laughingstock in Europe. Left wing puritans are just as lifekilling as right wing puritans. They HATE art.

I am gay and I can't remember the last time I agreed with anything GLAAD said.
GLAAD represents the far, far left politically correct professional victim faction of the gay population.
The are a loud faction of the gay community, but a small one.
Screw 'em.

GLAAD wasn't thinking of people like you and me in this case. They were probably thinking of gay and lesbian teens still in the closet who get bashed in their rural high schools because they're "different". If you don't think that happens, maybe you were lucky enough to grow up in a place where everyone was more enlightened. I think Bruno is pretty funny, but kids can sometimes be vicious and not hip when it comes to satire. Attacking GLAAD on this is like agreeing with the bullies.

And who believes that movies turn little thugs into gay bashers?
It is their parents and churches who fee them that homophobic bullshit.

It'salways so sad when member of a civil rights movement start apingtheir enemies.

The humorlessness is just another form of puritan prudery.

Were you all out protesting SeanPenn as Harvey? No?

So you don't have a problem with straightmen in gayface?

Hypocrites.

Playing a historical role is different than dressing up in 'gayface' and 'satirizing' stereotypes as if it was some reality you were satirizing. What's this movie on the merits, if any? I dunno. Probably will see it sooner or later.

I do know that the ads for it don't seem to be helping the climate.

And: there are no gifted gay actors who could have played Harvey?

Aren't you even a little sick of "straight" actors who talk about what a "stretch" it was to play gay?

Bruno is just telling it like it is. He is not making fun of gays...(much like Letterman wasn't making fun of SP's baby) he is pointing out the ridiculousness of EVERYTHING.

Distancing themselves from an image that many find threatening is cowardly.

If they had any self-respect they would defend effeminate men's right to be.

It's been said that Americans don't get satire, and apparently, neither do gay Americans. When Cohen did "Borat," it was a satire AGAINST sexism and racism and militarism. With Bruno, he is more focused, challenging people to be tolerant of a flamboyantly gay foreigner.
It's raunchy and hilarious at the same time. Tricking a bloodthirsty, fight-night crowd into witnessing a gay love scene was pure genuis. And asking evangelical priests to help him become straight showed the silliness of anti-gay bigotry.
