LOS ANGELES — The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said Friday that "Bruno," the new film starring Sacha Baron Cohen, reinforces negative stereotypes and "decreases the public's comfort with gay people."

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios, who saw the film Friday, said that "the movie was a well-intentioned series of sketches _ some hit the mark and some hit the gay community pretty hard and reinforce some damaging, hurtful stereotypes."

In a style similar to his popular Borat character, Baron Cohen brings Bruno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista, into ridiculous situations with unsuspecting everyday people.

Universal Pictures, which released "Bruno," sought GLAAD's input on the film and invited staff members to advance screenings, Barrios said.

The organization "shared a number of concerns, and unfortunately, the scenes that we had the biggest concerns about remained in the film," Barrios said.

One such scene shows Bruno in a hot tub with his adopted infant son and two naked men involved in a sex act.

"Scenes like that don't help America understand the hundreds of thousands of gay families who get up every day, do the carpool then rush home to make dinner and be with their children," Barrios said.

Similarly, the movie's mock marriage scene "doesn't help Americans understand the lives of gay couples who are denied the rights and protections of marriage in 43 states," he said.

Story continues below

Universal Pictures maintains that "Bruno" is a satire that "uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia."

"While any work that dares to address relevant cultural sensitivities might be misinterpreted by some or offend others, we believe the overwhelming majority of the audience will understand and appreciate the film's inarguably positive intentions, which we've seen demonstrated whenever we have shown it," the studio said in a statement.

Barrios said that while he believes the filmmakers had good intentions and that some moviegoers will see the satire, "some people in the gay community will be as troubled as GLAAD is that the movie doesn't decrease homophobia, but decreases the public's comfort with gay people."

The movie goes a bit too far with the fetish crap, but has some funny moments like the cameo from Elton John Snoop, and Bono

I believe the fetishism was essential to the movie. Bruno had to be joyfully, flamboyantly gay for the satire to work.

GLADD:... "decreases the public's comfort with gay people.

Oh. As opposed to any local Gay Pride event and parade?

Oh, ok.

Why am I supposed to care about the public's comfort with my being gay? I could care less how comfortable they are. Do you think civil rights come about by waiting for the public to change it's collective mind about groups of people? I don't.

And civil rights didn't come about by wasting energy on MOVIES.

You don't change the public's mind by censuring art. Even silly, ridiculous, trickster art.

So, will you be contributing the legal funds for those who are suing SBC?

The message of a gay pride parade is not "tolerate us"
The message is "I am a c@cksvcker and if you don't like it - F#&K OFF."
(At least the good pride parades)

GLAAD claims the marriage scene "doesn't help Americans understand the lives of gay couples who are denied the rights and protections of marriage in 43 states,"

That's right. And it's not supposed to. It's not a documentary. It's not Michael Moore. It's a comedy.

You need to grow a sense of humor.

Unless we can learn to laugh at ourselves, we are doomed. Certainly, this film (as you well know) was not designed to be a homophobic indictment of the Gay community. It is meant well. And if only half the scenes succeed, that's fine with me, since that's a pretty good batting average for a comedy.

Totally agree. What would they say about "The Birdcage"? It's all in good fun.

I think they are just trying to make headlines as "Bruno" will probably be #1 at the box office this week.

I've been not finding the *advertisements* for the film particularly 'stereotype-challenging,' ....but rather, probably, stereotype-reinforcing. It looks like a darn minstrel show.

If I were to see the movie, (and who will go, and who will see *what,* however sophisticated the irony may or may not be beneath the clashing attention-getting?) ...then I might have an opinion about its merits as satire, then, but ...it's really the people out there who *don't* have a sense of humor that are the prime concern. People who *want* to believe these things are true of gay men and by extension, all LBGT people.

That said, some kinds of not-funny are just not-funny. We'll see, I suppose.

Ha! I agree with you but I still think GLAAD had good intentions here. Not all of us live in communities where we're accepted. They were probably thinking of gay teens who are still in high school in rural towns and get bullied for being "different". And movies like this do give bullies ammunition.

You just posited an argument to maintain DADT:removing it might upset the straight guys.

And you really think this movie is going to make it worse for those kids?

What gives bullies ammunition is bigotry -- in human hearts and minds. And that's not the product of movies.

Essentially, it's how common ones' experience of gays is The same was true for blacks in earlier decades -- slavery, not being allowed to marry in the 19th century because they were property (Black churches that are against same gender marriage should examine how marriage was "defined" then and how it's been "defined" and "redefined" constantly over the centuries.

As more people encountered blacks in schools, jobs, neighborhoods, as political, entertainment and sports leaders, etc., they became more comfortable with blacks and so the assimilation advanced.

Gays had laws outlawing their lives. Films and television only showed bull dykes and fairies. This distorted view did not reflect the average gay American. Not having the equivalent of Helen Keller's "wa-wa" moment, some will see exaggeration and satire as representation of the whole.

Gays do have a great sense of exaggeration and appreciation of things being over the top, i.e. camp, sarcasm, and drag for example. When that is only image people get and it's compounded by religious and political leaders, that's where the cancer lies. When gays can be seen as boring, sweet, nasty, generous, angry and thoughtful as anyone else then "equality" is closer to actuality. Getting DADT and DOMA gone is another story.

Perhaps "Bruno" can be a jumping off point for discussions for better understanding. And maybe even "the gays" might be surprised now and then to find, as Lorraine Hanesbery once wrote: "There are no squares. Everyone is his own hipster."

Why do so many people insist on analogizing being Black with homosexuality?

GLBT folks deserve respect, but being a racial minority and being a behavioral minority are two *very* different things.

Perhaps 3rd time will be the charm...the baby in the hot tub was not real...it was photoshopped, as was the same baby on a rollercoaster and the same baby covered with bees. Give the audience some credit! I am gay, legally married and NOT offended by this film. HP, please let my comment through.

The commenters here should identify their sexual orientations, other minority groups to which they belong, and their political allegiances.

A correlational study of their opinions would be quite interesting.

I‘m metrosexual, I‘m a member of the Church of the Second Coming of the Great Prophet Zarquon, politically speaking I‘m an anarchist, and the reason Cohen made that movie is that he wanted to make a heap heap heap of money. He does not give a crap about homo rights.

If he only wanted to make money, he'd make Borat, part 2. If you haven't seen his TV show and his Ali G character then you are really missing out on the "mission" Cohen seems to be on and that's to confront stupidity, bigotry and intolerance with in your face comedy that is just this side of horror.

If he wanted to make money, playing a flamboyant gay fashionista doesn't seem like the way to do it.

I was born and raised in Alabama, it did not do us justice either. I have passed through Cullman, and being black we were told not to ever stop in that area, but once we were almost out of gas and had to stop. I have never been more afraid in my life. The shell station was full of men and when we went in to get a snack, they all stopped talking and were watching us. The cashier threw the change at us and told us not to come back again. It was horrible. That was in the early 90's. So I was really afraid for this guy when he was there, but I laughed and was happy that acting like a gay man he got out alive.
