Michelle Obama In Ghana (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/11/09 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 02:35 PM ET

The first family started their day at the Vatican, and ended it in Ghana.

For her arrival in Africa, Michelle Obama wore a classic look: a slim-fitting black dress, a strand of pearls, and her hair in a bun.

See photos below. The slideshow will be updated throughout the visit.

Yes, they are enjoying themselves - while the rest of the nation is going bankrupt, losing jobs, homes, businesses, etc.

I think they should get their butts home and concentrate on tending to the state of this nation, rather than going sight-seeing and taking in Broadway shows at tax-payer expense.

I am disgusted with them, and, yes, I was stupid enough to vote for them. Who knew they would be so bad. Wasn't he supposed to be one of us? LOL. Where's my bailout, Mr. President?

President Obama is traveling the world to mend some of our broken ties with our foreign allies. Yes, we have a lot of issues at home, but we also have a lot of issues abroad. We need to unite with our allies to protect America from the likes of North Korea and such. They aren't just on a "summer vacation"...they are building diplomacy, something we lost over the last eight years.

As President Obama said, this recession is DEEP, and it's going to get worse before it gets better. It took 2 years to get to the point in the recession we are in (economist say the recession started in December 2007), and how many years prior of foolish spending and non-regulatory "business", the President cannot get us out of this deep hole in six months. (Regardless if it were Obama or McCain) Think about when you start a new job that doesn't have issues...what have you accomplished in six months? Now imagine stepping in to a nightmare, and be expected to turn it around IMMEDIATELY. Give it time....it will get better. Have faith.

So he should not attend summits that are important to our relations with the global community and crucial to our economy? Seems to me thats an important part of being the leader of the free world. So, his wife and children went with him this time....it didn't cost you anymore than what the normal cost is on international trips like this. So they did some sight seeing while they were there. What do you expect, for them to just sit in a hotel room all day and be miserable? It seems to me that they were just trying to be a normal family spending some free time together between their fathers official duties....which he does very well. Unlike our last Pres. he can do more than one thing at a time. I'm sure he was in constant communication with the WH and his admin. Just because he's left the country doesn't mean he's not doing his job domestically. Also, the Broadway show was a promise the Pres. made to his wife. It's not like they do it every weekend. What exactly did their Braodway outing cost you? I bet it wasn't even .50 cents.

It was the African people who sold their own into slavery.

As it was the Germans who gave up their Jewish neighbors to the Nazis.

Many African nations resisted the slave trade. There is considerable scholarship that confirms this. Of course, it's easier and more comforting for some of you to believe the overly simplistic notion that "African people sold their own into slavery".

This family is a wonderful representative for all Americans. They seem to be enjoying people and more importantly staying connected to each other. They are always holding hands.

And the last pictures? Poor wee things look so tired after their travels. Cute.

Michelle looked ridiculous.

I bet those two girls are exhausted. But what an adventure, no!
03:23 AM on 07/13/2009
I noticed that Malia had her camera ready and took lots of pictures during the Inauguration and the Family's first days in the WH (perhaps to create a Memory Book). I really hope she and Sasha did the same with this experience as well as their overseas trip a few weeks ago. Their experiences are priceless.
04:10 PM on 07/13/2009
Please-if they are tired, stay home and give me back my tax payers dollars.

You act like you personally wrote a check to pay for them to go. So, how much does this family "owe" you for this trip? Send me your address and I'll mail your $.50 check right away.

Okay, check it out.

JCrew doesn't have the ad that features the outfit MO wore in Europe on the style pages today.

I swear it's been on every day, starting the day after MO wore the outfit in Europe.

Now--not.

I do hope this indicates that President Obama drew some boundaries with JCrew regarding exploiting the First Family, especially the kids, for cheap marketing purposes.

Good point. Someone, at any rate, brought it to the right person's attention. Now that they're back from their travels, maybe somebody picked up the latest copy of the catalog.

Rather tacky on JCrew's part, anyway. They could look classier and save print costs by just letting others mention where those clothes came from.
09:21 AM on 07/13/2009
Again, that JCrew ad is not on the Style pages.

I think maybe it was the "press release" which was actually an advertisement, in which JCrew crowed about the girls wearing JCrew trench coats, even giving the price of them!, that may have done it.

Or maybe other designers/apparel makers spoke out? If JCrew can use the First Family's wearing fo their clothes as an advertising gimmick, then other clothing lines should be able to do it, too.

I don't think it's right to exploit the First Family for advertising.

ok...is this wrong for me to say....but how $3xy is our POTUS - especially holding that baby. And I LOVE the picture of them walking down the run way with the African dancers - that woman with the HUGE grin on her face says it all. The sheer joy and excitement from having Obama there.

That was my favorite picture too. And that baby was so cute!

Love the purple. She ought to have worn that for the visits, not just for the arrival home!

I agree! The light colors and the darker purple look good on her.

I love the dress, too. It has an Yves St. Laurent look to it, and it is very flattering.
08:07 AM on 07/13/2009
Didn't like it, I thought it made her look matronly. Loved the tiered dress their youngest wore.
