US News and World Report:

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's love-struck romp in Buenos Aires with his Argentine "soul mate" wasn't just a threat to his marriage, job, and presidential aspirations. It also jeopardizes his Department of Homeland Security clearance and raises new questions about his candor on the steamy affair.

'C' Street needs to be investigated to see if it has had any impact on the member Governors' and Senators' security clearances or job performances have been compromised.

Some top secret agencies have to notify the F.B.I. if an employee is a few hours late without checking in. This dude was gone for almost a week in a foriegn country. Not a peep. I would have been jailed at first sight on my return.

Unlike FBI agents, Sanford was democratically elected governor. In a democracy the people are sovereign. If the secretive national security apparatus has the power to unseat a democratically elected state governor, something is seriously wrong with U.S. democracy.

A large number of oddballs always have security clearances, both in government and business. If not being an oddball was a requirement for having security clearances in government or business, then there would be a lot of unfilled committee slots and jobs.

This guy has top secret clearance? Come on, REALLY?

Just by listening to him and watching his behavior, he's seems very unstable and suffering from some form of depression. For the sake of all our security, please take away his top secret clearance NOW!

I hope some gentlemen from Langley have kept close tabs on Sanford's Argentinian friend. Wonder who she works for?

He's not in the Army. He's the democratically elected governor of a state. If he committed a serious crime he can be impeached. I doubt he will be impeached, but he is unlikely to ever be elected to office again.

The issue can really be serious..there are posts elsewhere that the mistress had trysts/connections with mafia men..there was also a report that they were being blackmailed. Given his capacity for babbling, you would think there would be an investigation

Do governors' of individual states automatically get "Top Secret Clearance?"
Frankly, I don't see why, and it is now clear a whole bunch of them can't be trusted anyway.

A governor will get some clearance to see info many other people don't, but they don't automatically get a single, overall "Top Secret Clearance". There really is no such thing--usually, one gets cleared for certain information in individual organizations, committees, projects, etc. that one is a member of--it's called compartmentalization. You're allowed to know only what you need to know. If you have a Top Secret clearance in one area, that doesn't automatically give yo a Top Secret clearance in other areas. Even US presidents aren't automatically cleared to see all Top Secret info (one glamorous example is that presidents aren't automatically cleared to see any info on UFOs). There are also classification levels above Top Secret.

The piles just keep getting higher and higher.

When the millionaires club, that's Senators and Congressmen don't have to obey the laws, and the enforcement officials and courts don't seek out prosecution, we are no longer a nation of laws, just rules ignored.
