MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Police and prison guards aided by search dogs hunted Sunday for two convicted killers and a third man who escaped the maximum-security Indiana State Prison, apparently through underground tunnels and pipes.

All three men were considered dangerous, and prison officials used a telephone notification system to send alerts to nearby residents and others. It was not known if any of the men had weapons.

Authorities identified the men as Charles Smith, 48, and Mark Booher, 46, both of New Castle, and Lance Battreal, 45, of Rockport. Smith and Booher were convicted of murder in the 1990s. Battreal was serving time for rape. All three faced at least 30 more years behind bars.

Indiana State Police, federal marshals and local police and sheriff's deputies joined prison guards in searching for the three.

But authorities did not know where the men might be headed, Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said. Investigators were poring over visitor logs and talking to the men's relatives in hopes of finding leads, Garrison said.

The men were discovered missing from their housing units around 10 a.m. Sunday, Garrison said. The prison said in a news release that it appeared they escaped by getting past the bars in the tunnels and pipe chases under the prison grounds. Garrison said it looked as if bars were removed.

The prison sits in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Michigan City, about 30 miles west of South Bend and not far from Lake Michigan and the Michigan state line.

Smith was sentenced in 1999 to 95 years for murder and had a projected release date in 2045. He has a tattoo of a scorpion on his right hand and a cross with dots on his left hand, the prison said.

Booher was sentenced in 1999 to 65 years for murder and 20 years for robbery. His projected release date was in 2041.

Battreal was sentenced in 1998 to 50 years for rape, 20 years for criminal confinement and three years for stalking. His projected release date was in 2047.

Additional details about their convictions were not immediately available from the Department of Correction.

Battreal and Smith may have both recently cut their hair or shaved it, the prison said.

New Castle and Rockport, the men's hometowns, are both more than 140 miles from the prison. New Castle is about 30 miles east of Indianapolis, and Rockport is about 30 miles east of Evansville.

Maximum security or Super Max, I guess those dasterdly evil prisoners did not know the difference. Those repbulicans probably set them free just to confuse the Gitmo situation.

How about this, no republican feared the priosoners escaping as much as they feard progressives wanting to set them free because when they were captured they were not read rights and provided an attorney. We know that the progressives will use any reason to set them free as soon as possilble. We know that the progressives will continue to side with the terrorists to persecute the conservatives. Remember the poll that said 25% of the liberals wanted us to loose the war in Iraq. Remember when Harry Reid said the war was lost. Now thats patriotism for you.

As I haven't read but a few comments here, I BET this story, if it hasn't already, will be fuel for lawmakers justifying why Gitmo should remain open and that these people should be kept there..

Nice Republican area with nice Republicans in charge in a nice Republican state with nice Republican Law and Order values with nice Republican results followed by nice Republican excuses. But, forget all that because Michigan City has a nice mall and casino and some of the most polluted parts of Lake Michigan.

It's a Democratic area of a Republican-leaning state (that went Democratic in '08). I'm not sure what your point was supposed to be, anyway.

On a side note, this is one more argument for capital punishment...life imprisonment does not mean incapacitation (not to mention the fact that they could kill guards and other prisoners).

Not sure how comments re incarceration for low level drug use (admittedly, not a good idea) relate to incarceration of 2 murders and a rapist.

Sounds like the guy in Shawshank Redemption - escaping through a tunnel Maybe they plan to go to Mexico or more likely Brazil. I believe the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with Brazil, but I could be wrong.

We WASTE hundreds of millions of dollars each year keeping low-level drug offenders locked up for non-violent offenses.

The primary question remains. Why, since the US claims to be the beacon of hope and freedom in an oppressive world, does it (with a total population of less than 5% of the world), have the highest prison incarceration rate?
Maybe a Devil's Island off the California coast is in order. I suggest San Miguel Island. Remote and surrounded by dangerous currents and winds, it would be virtually escape proof. But, since the US is patently a bankrupt; California if planning an early release for most non-violent offenders becaust the State Treasury is empty, this may be a moot point.

Here's where you need to read between the lines as far as statistics is concerned. For example, what can confound incarceration rate? How about efficacy of law enforcement infrastructure compared to poorer countries? That by itself can create a higher incarceration rate. Perhaps the beacon of hope and freedom is the ability to incarcerate those criminals. Other confounding variables are the ability of a corrupt/underfunded foreign justice system to report incarcerations. Remember that statistics can often represent errors in methodology, confounding, bias and generalizability. Bring plausible sources of such errors to mind when interpreting them and especially when comparing them. False conclusions can have negative consequences.

No one wants to see convicted murders and rapists on the loose. But If a person is sentenced to 20 years of more. You would think that every minute of every hour of that person's life would be dedicated to escaping. I'm pretty sure every official in that prison knows this. And that's why this story is so disturbing. There should be a rule that if a prisoner escapes from a prison. That prison should be closed as soon as possible because obviously those prisons aren't doing what they were designed for and is risk to the very people who pays for them.

Not closed, but rather a maintenance schedule has to be in place at all prisons. A checklist of all avenues of escape must be drilled and known. Obviously, what happened here is complacency and lack of discipline amongst the employees.

Wow escapees .

Well that is one good way to keep the public stired up about closing GITMO.

Ever since Shawshank Redemption the piping and conduit raceways have had cameras.

So this mean they were disabled ? Never installed ?

LOL Americans are so easily used.

This really is all about putting the Gitmo prisoners here and you are right most American's are blind. This prison was not even one where they would have been kept any way.

I'm skeptical that these prisoners escaped to make a political statement about the prisoners on Gitmo.
